I've been telling myself for days that he's far from the optimal pick at #8, but he's far from the worst guy they could have taken at that slot. Either Yzerman knows something literally everyone else doesn't, or Broberg is not the worst pick in the first round. It's truly a matter of his development; if he's given the opportunity to opt out of his SHL contract in order to play 30+ minutes a night against his peers in the OHL, he's going to develop fantastically. I'm not sure if playing against men is going to do much for things like "hockey IQ" or other buzzword qualities a player does or doesn't have. Considering he has NHL boots, the opportunity to work on moving the puck when he can't skate it out of harm's way and round out his production can be accomplished at a lower level.

The nice thing about his development is that even if he opts to play in Hamilton this upcoming season, he'll still be AHL eligible as a 19 year-old. There's options for him over the next 2-3 years and I'm optimistic that under Holland's typically patient approach that Broberg is more likely to hit his ceiling than his floor.

I too got the feeling that Holland thinks this team is more than a couple years away, and that keeping sights on a long term goal are equally as important as immediate fixes to the team. Next year's draft has a stronger pool of forwards, which is likely when Holland will look at immediately addressing the need for more skilled forwards. I find it telling that both the man who lived close to the USNTDP practice facility AND the team that's closest to them both opted against taking players from the USNTDP superteam. A situation where certain players were being carried or that as a unit they were more than the individual parts?

Thread: Zucker Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MNBassman</b></div><div>Would you make either of my deals sans retention?</div></div>
I don't think Edmonton can afford it, but the cap issues are really only for this coming year so sending back Manning would effectively reduce Zucker's cap hit by $1.175M for 1 year (if Manning is buried in the minors). And I don't want to give up on Puljujarvi just yet. See below for a revised proposal.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CzechingOut</b></div><div>Instead of retaining salary why not send them Manning and up the pick to a 2nd in 2020. Gets us out of Manning and them retaining plus they get an extra pick during the expansion year to maybe help influence Seattle</div></div>
Excellent idea. I'm up against the cap this year only - i have enough cap space in 2020 to consider signing Taylor Hall - so sending Manning back would work for this purpose. See below for (your) revised proposal.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JayTea</b></div><div>The problem with salary retention is the Wild should have cap space this year and maybe for the next year or two depending on how they manage it, but in 4 years when Zucker's deal is still on the books they'll hopefully be signing guys like Kaprizov, Fiala, Donato, Ek, Kunin and Greenway to bigger contracts and every bit of cap space will count. I don't think the Wild retain on a Zucker trade unless it's a serious overpay.

Zucker makes a lot of sense for Edmonton, I'd love to see him have a full season attached to McDavid because Zucker has the speed to keep up with him.</div></div>

This makes a lot of sense and dovetails nicely with Edmonton's needs: hard up against the cap for 2019-20 but plenty of space beyond that.

So something like this:

:oilers
Zucker

:wild
Yamamoto
2020 2nd round pick
Manning

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ConnorsCousin</b></div><div>Good points everywhere. As I see the Oilers going into the next season, they've got:

Draisaitl/McDavid/Kassian
????/RNH/????
????/????/Puljujarvi
Gambardella/Khaira/Gagner
Extra: Brodziak/Cave

Klefbom/Larsson
Nurse/????
Sekera/Benning
Extra:????

Koskinen/????

You need to move out Lucic and Russell and maybe Manning. Who would you put in those spots above?</div></div>

Rather than building from your roster, I would prefer to do something like this:

Krieder/McDavid/Kassian
Panik/Draisaitl/Puljujarvi
Tanev/RNH/Marody
Khaira/Ennis/P. Russell
Extra: Cave

Klefbom/Larsson
Nurse/Stralman
Sekera/Jones
Extra: Bear

Koskinen/McIlhenny

Montoya comes off the books in July, and if Holland walks away from Rattie, Rieder, Chiasson, Petrovich, Gravel, and Stolarz he will have close to $6,900,000 in free cap space. In this scenario, the impossible is possible, and Lucic, Russell, and Gagner are all moved without bringing back substantive salary. Brodziak and Manning can be buried in the AHL, if they can't be moved or aren't "lost" to waivers. With the projected increase in the salary cap, Holland may have a bit more than $24,000,000 to play with. I would move Benning as well, because his value is probably good right now, the extra $1,900,000 in cap space would be nice to have, and he might have to be part of the deal to get Krieder, or a sweetener in a Lucic deal. Might lose some good prospects and draft picks to a Lucic, or Russel, deal as well.

Panik = $4,750,000 (est) x 4
Puljujarvi = $950,000 (est) x 2 - he's coming off his ELC and does not have arbitration rights
Krieder = $4,625,000 x 1
Ennis = $1,100,000 x 2
Gambardella = $875,000 (est) x 2
Khaira = $900,000 (est) x 3
Tanev = $1,650,000 x 2
P. Russell = $800,000 x 2
Stralman = $5,000,000 (est) x 2
McIlhenny = $1,500,000 x 1

I think there is a realistic chance that Holland could sign Panik, and he may be willing to give up the assets necessary to acquire Krieder (assuming he thinks he can re-sign Krieder). I'm not sure Stralman would sign, but he might if Holland gives him a salary increase at this late juncture in his career. I am also not so sure that Ennis and Tanev would not sign elsewhere, for similar money. In any case, this is just an example of how Holland could build a much stronger roster and still have around $3,750,000 in cap space left over. That's enough cap space to accomodate a partially buried Ganger contract, or to bring in help if injuries impact key players during the season. That being said, it is still entirely dependent on moving our $6,000,000 in dead salary, and another $7,150,000 in marginal contracts.

If that roster existed, I would hope the new coach would aim for a reasonably even split of ice time among the top three lines; perhaps something like:

1st line = 19 minutes
2nd line = 17 minutes
3rd line = 17 minutes
4th line = 7 minutes
