Love this. Excellent example of the kind of team the Sens are striving to be. He's that hard working, abrasive style of player that other teams hate playing against, and he's responsible enough to have a role as a PK guy. He's worked his ass of for the team for years, ever since he earned his first contract as an undrafted camp invite.

I thought he'd be 5-5.25mil, so him coming in below 5mil is excellent.

Another guy I can’t wait to potentially hit UFA.
But really this is a fantastic deal for a guy who should grow into a talented top 6 mainstay (which is basically already is). Don’t see this becoming another Colin White, Batherson is a key piece to the Sens future.
Just trade for Eichel now😉

Buffalo Sabres signed Casey Mittelstadt (3 Years / $2,500,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>EmpressKayla</b></div><div>This reminds me of the Sam Bennett contract. Committing this much to Mittelstadt right now is pretty risky given that he has only had one decent season. However, if his growth this year is a sign of things to come, this could look like one of the best deals in the league by the end.</div></div>
It's only 2.5M for a guy that was at .53 PPG last season. Had 17 points in 28 games under Granato too. I don't really see how that's "committing this much". Seems pretty fair to me. Close to the Chytil deal. It's not like he's making 4.4M.
2.5M is a pretty easy contract to bury anyways.

He's only played just over 100 games and scored less than 60 points. It's a risk, because he doesn't have a proven track record.

Bit of a gamble based on one season. Would have waited till the end of this season before giving him that kind of money and term. But if he can continue to perform like he did the previous season then its a good deal.

This is an amazing deal. This would be an excellent deal for a player that you plan to use in the AHL this season. If he plays as the backup this year, then it should be an absolute steal.

Nice little deal. If Forsberg falters, there's a path to him being in the NHL by the end of the year. Was excellent in the shortened season this year.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>drewjenkins</b></div><div>Brannstrom for Eichel?
Is that what I'm hearing?</div></div>
I think he'd make a lot of sense as one of the pieces. He's only 21, and there's a lot of upside there. Plus he has a lot of history with Rasmus Dahlin, which always seems to play in the NHL. always want to keep your stars happy. Gotta think he'd be one of the more appealing targets, as from everything I've seen, teams don't seem willing to part with the true top tier prospects in Eichel talks. Sens would be able to build a robust package of futures beyond that as well.

Personally had him at 1.25×2, but I totally get why one year makes sense for both sides.
I was a big fan of what he brought to the table for Ottawa this year. Not super dangerous offensively, but very effective at keeping the puck in the O-zone and allowing the offensive possession to continue. He was excellent in moving the puck in transition, and despite being small he was very effective in his positional defending, able to angle off plays and retrieve pucks efficiently.
I imagine he's currently slotting in as the 3rd pair LD, with Holden playing the off side. I think ideally it would shake out where Zub and Holden play top 4 on the right side and Zaitsev would fall to playing 3rd Pair with Mete, but that's not terribly realistic.
It does continue to bring into question Brannstrom's standing in the Organization. The Sens now have 7 D on one way deals (Chabot, Zub, Mete, Holden, Zaitsev, Del Zotto, Brown), which makes his path to the NHL very murky this year. I believe he is still able to skip waivers, but to my eye he's at worst a regular NHL player, and I just don't see how more AHL time helps him at this stage.

(OTT/VGK) - Dadonov for Holden and 2022 3rd round pick
I'm going to try to break this down in the most comprehensive and most objective way possible.
Hockey side of the trade: Fair Deal
1. As a top 6 forward on the wrong side of 30, Evgeni Dadonov can still score goals in bunches.
2. However, he was never a good fit in Ottawa.
3. He could be a good fit in Vegas if he has the same success there as he did with Huberdeau and Barkov in Florida. That's a big if.
4. What Ottawa gets back in return is a veteran defenceman who can succeed when given the chance, like he did in the playoffs with Vegas.
5. Ottawa also gets back a 3rd round pick.
6. When I made posts about trading Dadonov to other teams, I had Ottawa receiving what San Jose got for Mike Hoffman basically.
7. The 3rd round pick cancels out the 4th and 5th round picks in the Hoffman trade.
8. Holden was traded for the equivalent of a 2nd round pick 3 years ago when he was a pending UFA.
9. Florida received a 7th round pick for taking on Hoffman while Vegas isn't receiving anything for taking on Dadonov.
10. Dadonov was a former 3rd round pick himself, so one could argue that Dadonov for a 3rd round pick straight up would be fair.
Money side of the trade: Big win for Ottawa
1. Vegas is taking on Dadonov's full cap hit of 5 million and Ottawa is not retaining any salary.
2. Vegas will need to pay Dadonov 5 million this season and 6.5 million next season.
3. Ottawa only needs to pay Holden 1.4 million before he becomes a UFA this season.
4. Ottawa can trade Holden anywhere while there are 10 teams to where you can't trade Dadonov.
5. Vegas has replaced most of Fleury's cap hit with Dadonov's.
6. Dadonov is now an obstacle to acquire Eichel.
I voted for the Ottawa Senators :)
