Sean Monahan Trade Comps
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>F50marco</b></div><div>Something to keep in kind that isn't shown in these trade comps is how many playoff teams had cap space and what % of their cap they had to deal with per year. A major driving force for Monahan's value is his potential cap hit being basically AHL replacement level. So many teams have so little cap space to move this year as opposed to some of the comps years.
This may be one of the toughest years for playoff teams to go get players at the TDL. Its not so bad if you have a cap dump you can send the other way but many teams have done tidy business and have neither cap space to get a 3-4-5M players nor a cap dump they could send back of equal value to offset the player coming in.
So Monahan at 950K (50% retained) is basically the only option some of these teams have if that's the type of player they want. if this TDL was transposed over another years TDL, the value probably would drop. The main driving factor for Monahan's value is probably this particular seasons circumstances. Not so much that he soooooo good.</div></div>
It is one of the reasons I included the ROR deal because it came at a premium because the salary was 25% of original. Jarnkrok also included for that reason too ($2m retained down to $1m). I guess I leave it up to readers to determine what fits and what doesn’t.
The environmental landscape (league wide cap space, availability of other centers, etc) is really hard to factor into these.
Separately, I had thought about doing one of these using just comps from a single year. For instance, my favorite year was probably 2007 (which was nuts). I’d like to make a list of all the guys that were traded that year…and the most similar player today. (Who are the modern day versions of Peter Forsberg, Chris Pronger, Keith Tkachuk, Bill Guerin, Yanic Perreault, etc)…and what it would look like today if we had that many stars moving around.

I'm still not 100% comfortable with pointing fingers until it's confirmed (press conference is on Feb 5th) and nor am I really interested in a bunch of comments in AGMs or discussion threads along the lines of "X team declines because [player] is a sex offender". Twitter itself has been a cesspool since Dube, Hart, and now the two NJD skaters took their leave of absence from their respective clubs.
I present this only as an honest question and not as an accusation, but is that what we should be fostering here? I personally don't value engagement and clicks over much more focused discussions and the only real discussion of importance the hockey community as a whole should be having surrounding the 2018 WJC team is "what can we do as the hockey community to make sure this doesn't happen again?". Vitriol and anger over the five names in speculation isn't doing anything effective and if anything just opens up more avenues for flaming/trolling.</div></div>
My opinion would be to send warnings first and if they continue to post about it, then upgrade to an infraction.

With names being released in regards to the 2018 WJC Team Canada scandal, I wanted to poll the room on how we should proceed.
Currently, any speculation as to who was involved or who did what garners an automatic Level 1 infraction. I am anticipating that were going to see some very inappropriate hot-takery once the names are released. How would you guys like to go about managing those users that take this opportunity to troll and be the least-decent versions of themselves?</div></div>

Rutger doesnt sign
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>F50marco</b></div><div>I think its important to distinguish between bad trade and bad value. Its a bad trade (assuming Rutger hasn't asked for a trade) because he's a highly touted prospect that they just drafted but the value believe it or not isn't bad. Its main fault is quantity over quality but if you were to trade each one of those pieces individually and then consolidate as much as possible, you'd probably end up with a value that would be respectful for Rutger if it were done that way.
Regardless though, its the equivalent of trading 100 pennies for a 1 dollar coin/bill. Yeah they equal the same but intrinsically they don't. If someone wanted to pay me a dollar in pennies for something I had, I'd rather not make deal at all than accept the pennies.</div></div>
Yeah, well you penny haters are a different breed anyway so whatever... 🙄

I came by here to see what people thought of this deal when it was first signed. I remember liking it myself and that seems to be the overwhelming opinion. However, it has turned out poorly.
"He sucks bye" appears to be what happened.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>F50marco</b></div><div>May just be easier to let users create secondary accounts? Its not like the current process is really deterring anyone. I'm pretty sure there's a Detroit/Tampa fan that is on their 100th account since they started on here. They don't even try to hide it anymore and know if we ban them, they'll just create a new one tomorrow.</div></div>
I'll jump in here quickly.
From my understanding we maintain the practice because of <em>banned users</em> using alternates to get around their bans. It would seem to me at least that opening the door to alternate accounts we would be essentially eliminating the purpose of a permanent ban. This is why I've historically asked for IP bans despite Banks' ability to do so and their limited applicability (they stop the honest ones, the truly petulant will just use a VPN or bypass using alternate means). These punishments need to maintain their severity, not open up new avenues to continue flaming/trolling other users.
I would support some form of monthly sweep. Hopefully it's a process that can be automated. It's futility just comes with the territory, like removing bot posts or moving general discussion topics out of AGM to their respective forums.

I would be ok with that, but you need a dance partner. Not sure we find one.
Did not realize Dube was on the 2018 WJC team. That actually changes a lot for me...

The season is still early enough for the Devils to win the presidents trophy if they went on a run. The timing of the trade, is paramount. Right now, the 14th pick only has slightly better value than the 25th frankly. That's the diff between the Wings and Devils right now. Im not sure I'd bet the Wings the make the playoffs and the Devils to miss, at this juncture. Im actually more inclined to bet the opposite will happen despite the current standings.</div></div>
Yes! This^
All risk calculations are combinations of two variables...cost and probability.
Like insurance (if you have 10% chance of crashing your car and it would cost $1000 to fix....vs...20% chance of crash and $500 to fix)
This far out...standings alone should not dictate value of pick...because the probabilities will change!!
(one could use playoff odds as proxy for probability variable....as the season progresses, standings would be assigned more weight in models)

Jets get better and get pick
Sorry Howie, this makes no sense for a rebuilding team that doesn't need cap space and may even need contracts to hit the cap floor over the next 2 seasons. I know you think cause of my protest to your thread earlier that I don't see Anderson as a cap dump but that was never my issue with it, it was simply the fact that you created the earlier thread just to troll and dump on the Habs. It probably would cost a 1st maybe even two right now for Montreal to move Anderson but with no incentive to do so the Habs simply wouldn't do it. Maybe if we had a fully healthy lineup and were 2nd or even 3rd in the division and we wanted to make additions at the TDL, paying to dump Anderson would at least make a bit of sense.

While there's snark there sure at one point, its totally tolerable and within the rules IMHO. No more than some of my replies to be absolutely honest. As much as its annoying as f***, "goading" at least that level isn't infraction worthy if its done within the rules.
I do believe this was more against the rules than anything he did:
And this IMHO looks like a power trip as there was clearly nothing done to cross any lines.
Listen, i prefer the mods take the onus themselves to correct the situation if there is some sort of dispute against them because 1) If I just delete everything it just looks like we're just trying to cover everything up and 2) if you were given an warning/infraction, they'd never know about it which only leaves them questioning if mods are above the law so to speak.
Honestly, just easier for everyone to get ahead of it and clear the air. Believe me, if I truly felt he was in the wrong here I'd gladly be throwing down some words but I can't in good conscience say he did anything wrong there and if anything, respectfully, you were much more in the wrong than he was.</div></div>
Finally got around to it. It's been a bad week for me and I think my emotions got ahead of me on this one, even so far as getting in my own way for getting an apology out.
In more focused news, what's the mood of the room for permanently banning user Campabee during his next infraction?

If Drury trades Kakko for a rental he wont be long for NYR.
Kakko does a lot of things well that do not show up on the scoresheet- yet the good teams (those with a realistic shot of going deep) really crave. For now- Kakko will work with Muse and the rest of the coaching staff, and we'll see what happens once Chytil returns.
If NYR decide to move on from Kakko, examples of players to target would include Morgan Frost, Shane Pinto, and Shane Wright. Who knows what the trade package would look like- with additional picks, prospects, and/or depth players included on either side of any deal. But a rental? Absolutely not!

Not agreeing/disagreeing with actual take though, just that from what I saw, I didn't see any rules actually being broken and while an argument can get heated with disagreement, its certainly not cause for threatening infractions and what not IMHO.</div></div>
I fully intended it as a warning, not a threat, something I've done on multiple occasions to a generally positive reaction: taking the opportunity to actually engage with them instead of just slapping on an infraction or warning has been a productive tool for me historically. Based on that user's posting history, I'm not at all surprised that they jumped at the opportunity to play the victim.
I'd ask you go back and re-read their replies: they were pretty obviously goading me into where that conversation went. Should I have known better than to engage? Yes. Am I comfortable walking it back? Right now, no. The damage is already done. I'll reconsider in the morning when I'm less charged about it.
In the meantime, I take no issue with stopping my practice of warning users via replies.
