Very surprised Treliving wasn’t able to find some common ground on a multi year deal, even in the 2-3 year range. You are now looking at 5+ mil next year on a long term (4-5) IF he is able to replicate this past season. He could potentially become a Top 10 goalie who could've been had on a modest deal and for a team that has tried 5 goalies (Andersen, Campbell, Mrazek, Murray, and Samsonov) in varying degrees to be the #1 TOR will most likely be turning to a 6th during Auston Matthews 8 year career.

It’s a shame this got to arbitration although I’m sure some are happy with this for some reason.

The one bright side is they can see how he plays this season and if he performs well again they can give him a multi year deal. Everyone was saying to give Campbell a multi year deal and look how that went for the oilers. Not saying they’re the same but at least they’re not overpaying

I think they're hoping that the brick Woll can take over starting next year

Sammy will not be a Leaf next season, but the goalie carousel is always turning, so a replacement will be found.

So instead of locking him up on a 2-3 year deal this year at a modest cap hit you are most likely looking at a long term deal in the 4-5 year range at 5+ on the free agent market.

Hard to see this as a win UNLESS Joe Woll becomes a starter. Otherwise massive L IMO

Back on July 2 I posted ACGMs predicting that Treliving would sign Samsonov for 3 seasons at $3.5 million, so this seems like a loss to me because now Samsonov will cost more if he plays well this year and if he doesn't, replacing him won't be cheap, either.

Kind of unfortunate that this walks him immediately to UFA. Can't critisize it too much, pretty standard arbitration reward signing. We've seen it before and we'll see it again.

Plus, I'd be surprised if Woll doesn't steal the net at some point this season. That kid is the real deal

For now though, I like the dollar amount on this

This contract tells me that BT doesn't see Sammy as their long term solution. If he has a great season he will likely price himself out of TOR. But if he repeats what he did last season, they're gonna be in tough situation. I doubt Sammy will be a Leaf after next season.

He's probably gone in a year but good price for a starter for this season. Very fair ruling.

The number of people in this thread who don't realize that this was always going to be a one year award at whatever the salary arbitrator decided is wild.

That's a good price... but Toronto is now nearly $7 million over the cap AFTER LTIR and they will almost certainly lose him next summer.

But Sammy also has to accept that modest cap hit for multiple years, which he may not do

Got a lot of work to do to get cap compliant, but still plenty of time to do so. I'm sure Treliving has a plan.

Would love to see Woll get 20+ starts this year with Sammy being here only one more year.

Your 2-3 year deal at a "modest" cap hit would have been in the 4-5M range starting this year. Need to save all the cap space they can this year. Next year and onward it's wide open for making moves.
