Marner trade
The CBJ trade is at least somewhat more sane than the absurd Sportsnet one that's been going around, but it's still potentially a no-go for us simply because we already have Laine and Gaudreau as top-line wingers with huge contracts, so that would have to be adequately navigated.

I won't be sad to end up not top two. My strategy is to pay no attention at all to the top two or three prospects so I can't be disappointed, anyway. Last year was fun because Fantilli was totally new to me at the draft as I'd been paying all my attention to Carlsson and Smith. Bedard who? Celebrini who?

Back to the Playoffs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Digitalbooya06</b></div><div>The pick is the most valuable piece coming from Minnesota. Curious how a top 10 pick is not helpful. Are expectations that CBJ will make the playoffs next year?
I’m curious on Jiricek. He seems to be unhappy with how things are going. I totally understand not wanting to trade him, but I think there is some level of discontent. We might have to swing back around if he ever wants out.</div></div>
Expectations are to be competitive in 2-3 years. Jiricek <em><strong>was </strong></em>understandably frustrated, he dominated the AHL last year (and a lot of this year when he was down there), but was healthy scratched or demoted/promoted quickly for a stretch. He was frustrated about not playing, and it was aimed nearly entirely at the GM who no longer has a job with the team. He was an NHL regular at the end of the season.
The issue is, if we trade Jiricek, we don't have a suitable replacement or prospect of his caliber on the right side, and there aren't any available in this draft aside from maybe Levshunov, who's gone in the top-4. So no, a top-10 pick doesn't do a lot of good if it's at the expense of Jiricek.
Marchenko and Rossi are about the same age and produce about equally, so I'd call them equal value. We're set on the left side with Werenski here and Mateychuk on the way. We don't have anyone on the right aside from Severson and Gudbranson, so that coupled with no desire to move Marchenko makes this a quick no from Columbus.
Total value is pretty close in all likelihood, but it doesn't at all fit Columbus' needs.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Digitalbooya06</b></div><div>The pick is the most valuable piece coming from Minnesota. Curious how a top 10 pick is not helpful.</div></div>
Because we're largely finished with the "acquire lots of prospects" phase and are now into the "actually develop the kids you have" phase. Same reason we're not trading Jenner anytime soon.

The news of Jiricek's discontent has been grossly exaggerated to say the least. It's no more than literally any other prospect in any other market who was hoping not to go to the AHL. It's been blown out of proportion into something supposedly more than that entirely on the basis of "but something something Columbus".

"This post isn't serious" doesn't absolve you from getting flack. If it wasn't serious, you could have left it unposted. You put it on a public forum, you are subject to public backlash.
And that "poverty franchise" has made it past the first round the same number of times the leafs have in the last 10 years.

The self awareness of this one is zero. You're literally culprit #1.
If you're actually interested in having a discussion (doubtful): this isn't "making necessary changes", this is terrible asset management. Rebuilding teams don't trade likely 2 top-5 picks (KJ and the 2025 1st) for a 3rd liner with one good year and a second $5M+ goalie with term, that's straight-up moronic.
I'd entertain moving every single one of those pieces (but not until KJ is healthy post-surgery recovery) for upgrades, but saying KJ definitively wants out, having Columbus trade for Markstrom given Elvis is still here, and then gaslighting fans that tell you that doesn't make sense is some brainworm s***.

Lovely…giving up that entire package so we get the privilege of paying him $13M per year until he’s 36.
And knowing his production will be halved because he doesn't have Matthews or Tavares passing him the puck.
Even if Mitch were to decide he wants to retire in Ohio, CBJ v much pass.

Edit genuinely asking, never heard much after that but remember seeing him taking part and wondering how.
You can find an excuse. I’m sure most older nhl players need some sort of surgery.</div></div>
Hossa might very well be allergic to his equipment, 1 game for charity doesn’t change that. It likely causes rashes and such and he chose to deal with the result for a singular game whereas an NHL season would only likely cause severe issues later on as the allergens never fully heal.

Had an excellent rookie year under Brad Larsen, 40 points with no PP time. But it was clear Pascal Vincent didn't like him this year. He came in with no summer bulk as well. He floated and seemed confused in Vincent's system, and was eventually sent to Cleveland for a while. Did very well in Cleveland, came back up, and continued to be treated as an afterthought by Vincent. Then got hurt on a faceoff, tore his labrum, and had season-ending surgery. Not a banner year for anyone in those circumstances.

Potential Rossi Trades
Probably a year too early in Columbus's rebuild cycle to think about moving out pieces in house for other ones. I'd love to get Rossi because that solves the 2C problem straightaway. But at the cost of Jiricek? The org's only RHD prospect with top 4 upside? Not yet. I'm not saying hard no, but I'm definitely saying not this summer or coming season. Talk again 2025.

Columbus just has so many D just like Iorio in the system already, I don't think he's particularly interesting. Tenth overall and a C-level D prospect just don't net you a team's top prospect, especially when the team losing the top prospect has nothing notable behind him at his position in their own pool. Iorio is not a better prospect than Corson Ceulemans, for example. They're both projected third pairing D in the NHL, and Iorio plays for a far better AHL squad than Ceulemans does. It should hurt to acquire Jiricek, as moving him hurts the Jackets (and we have established that, while disgruntled about the team's mishandling of him this season, he has not asked for a trade). This doesn't hurt Washington at all.

Actually, no. No he did not. Never got anywhere near that, in fact. He expressed frustration that he was going back to the AHL at one point - y'know, like many prospects on most teams do early on in their development - and some wannabe pundit took that and fabricated a "trade request" out of thin air, and other folks pounced on that and ran with it with no further justification or research beyond "it's Columbus". It's literally completely made up. The guy for whom there's a "made a trade request"/"no he didn't"/"maybe he did" back-and-forth was Merzlikins.</div></div>

I told them I don’t think so, but that’s your opinion. I was out of the lineup after that. A whole month now, it feels like I haven’t played.
