One Year On

Ullmark would be there as the temporary backup this year. Husso hasn't done that well. Binnington hasn't done that well either, so this might be just what the Blues need. As for Ristolainen... The Blues seem to be leaning heavily on 5 of their defenders, and might lose one to Seattle. They'll want someone, unless they think that one of Bortuzzo/Mikkola/Walman is going to be the guy.

Do you think the Kings might protect 4/4? They could keep their whole defence (Doughty, Walker, Roy, Clague, with Anderson and Bjornfot exempt), and the forwards would be Kopitar, Kempe... pick two others?

I was not aware that Bjornfot was so highly thought of. So if he's 3LD... is Maatta #7? Does Clague get scratched?

Putting the Cap to Work
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>I can see the advantage of getting futures in exchange for UFA cap dumps like Eriksson and Turris, but I don't think that (a) we should lumber ourselves with multiple years of James Neal, and (b) Lavoie and Rodrigue are sufficient compensation for doing so, especially if we're including a prospect who's more highly regarded than the latter.</div></div>
Yeah, having Neal for two years is a little bit hurtful. If I remove him... I really like the idea of picking up Lavoie and Rodrigue, a RW and a goalie who might be ready after Quick's time is done. And Thomas is an obvious option to trade, with Turcotte and Byfield probably ahead of him in the depth chart and Vilardi and Anderson-Dolan already being NHL centres. But it doesn't have to be Thomas. I just thought that the Oilers could use forward prospects and the Kings have extra centres. If Neal isn't part of the deal, what's the price for taking on Turris?

You made me go look up Campbell and... yes, that seems like a player who should be part of the plan. That might shuffle some of my apparent needs. And yes, Farrance is welcome. (although maybe he should start in the AHL?) And I love Tomasino.

They have Blackwood, but they'll probably want a young 1B. A second doesn't seem like a lot, but Saros has had a rough start to the year, so I figure that drags his value down a little.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>villenash</b></div><div>AVS -- not really worth the retention if all you can get is a 5th</div></div>
What else were you going to do with that cap space? Get something for him and let the free agents of the world know "we'll trade you to a contender if we can".
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>villenash</b></div><div>WPG -- I can't see Poile trading Forsberg to WPG when they'll be in our division again next year -- and why does WPG need another winger? They need defense more. I think both teams decline.</div></div>
Never been a big fan of the "don't trade within your division" idea. If it's good for you, make the trade. And Winnipeg... Yes, their bigger need is on defence. But having turned Laine and Roslovic into Dubois, they suddenly find themselves down two wingers and up a centre. They could use a winger. (especially a defensively-solid one like Forsberg)

Trade for Ekholm and protect him in the expansion draft
This is a good plan. Also, when Pittsburgh's collapse comes because they trade away every prospect and draft pick, it's going to be spectacular.

What Would Burke Give
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>WTF are you talking about?</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pharrow</b></div><div>yeah I'm a bit confused here. What has Tkachuk done to make people melt down now.</div></div>
From Reddit:
Elliotte Friedman states it all started with the Muzzin puck incident
They had an internal meeting after that and it went sideways after that
Tkachuk was frustrated, he feels that some of his teammates didn't want him creating something every game.
Tkachuk is confused with that as that is how he plays the game, causing chaos and getting everyone involved
Markstromm charged down the ice, twice. Elliotte thinks it's to send a message that "we are not playing hard enough"
Elliotte says that the Calgary group is not playing for each other
Brad Treliving is making calls on a lot of guys. Not only for Sam Bennett.
Elliotte says Calgary are looking at this as "It's time to change our group" (Hard to do due to Border-- but they are trying to change there group)
Is any of that true? Is trading Tkachuk the answer? I don't know. But it occurred to me that Brian Burke was just signed by an NHL team, and that Burke would very much want Matthew Tkachuk.

It definitely is for cap reasons, but is it really different than retaining salary on any other transaction? It's just... taking on salary you didn't have before. Kinda like I did taking Neal from the Oilers. You're probably right; there's probably a good reason I've never seen it before. But it makes a lot of sense.

Something like that might work. A 3rd might not do it, but a 2nd... or a young player. Seattle will be lacking people in that 20, 21 year old range who are going to make the team in a few years. Josh Mahura, Benoit-Olivier Groulx, or Maxim Golod come to mind.

B. One year of Holtby and several years of Chiarot/Edmundson/Fleury/whoever
I still think I'm taking a defender. No offence to Allen, but there's a decent selection of defenders here. Even Weber, despite his contract, has to look awfully tempting. That's the #1 defenceman on one of the league's better teams.

I think that we'll have to wait and see how the season plays out, including whether the Ducks trade Rakell (or, less likely, Silfverberg).
If you're picking for Seattle, you ought to start looking at whether you're interested in Jacob Larsson or Josh Mahura.</div></div>
I thought Anaheim might do 4 and 4. But if Larsson's available, that's probably the pick.

To put it into perspective Staal cost us roughly 3.2M cash total and filled a spot.</div></div>
This does seem worse. But I think that Staal deal might've just been amazing and may never come again.
