Team: 2021-22 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 11, 2021
Published: Feb. 11, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Wings:
Get William Lagesson, 3rd-round pick
Lose 7th-round pick, about $2.2M in cap space

Oilers:
Get Marc-Andre Fleury (1yr, $1.75M), 7th-round pick, almost $3M in cap space
Lose James Neal, William Lagesson

Vegas:
Get James Neal (2yrs, $1.4375M), $3.5M in cap space
Lose Marc-Andre Fleury, 3rd-round pick

Maybe a 3rd is too high for Vegas to give up. Still, interesting little use of cap space. Also, how does Detroit get better?

Especially with the way he's playing right now, zero chance Vegas gives up any additional assets OR retains money on MAF.

Dude you can't retain more then 50% of a players salary, Both Neal and Marc Andre-Fleury are over the 50% threshold.

So I’m assuming these trades occur next year based on the ACGM season? If so, that’s retention for 2 slots and 1.75M (MAF) + (1.44M * 2 years for Neal) = 4.63M in cap space and 1.5M cash (Fleury) + 2.88M cash (Neal). To put it into perspective Staal cost us roughly 3.2M cash total and filled a spot.

Kudos for working through a complicated and delicate trade scenario.

Also Fleury doesn't waive if he ends up in Detroit and if Edmonton pulls something like that they pull something like that they can kiss free agents good bye.

I think the wings pass, they would need more compensation for taking 2 spots

In each of these trades, the original teams retain 50% of the salary and then the Wings also retain 50% of the remaining salary. It has been done before: Toronto briefly had Robin Lehner and retained $1.25M as he was traded from Chicago to Vegas.

Is having 2 retained salaries a big deal? What else were they gonna retain?

This does seem worse. But I think that Staal deal might've just been amazing and may never come again.

The Staal trade was actually significantly lower than Marleau’s so I wouldn’t say we will never see a deal like that again.

You only get 3, this could limit who they would retain at the deadline when making deals to get more assets. I just think we need more to take 2 retention spots and the salary, or it's a no go.
