<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dutchies</b></div><div>The problem is that both you and jr400 are only looking at this from a Hawks perspective. The Leafs are better suited keeping Marner for the 4 years, and possibly beyond. He's only 24. Kane having the option to go back to the Hawks in 2 years does nothing to make the Leafs want to make this trade.</div></div>

Thanks for the comments. This is the kind of intelligent debate I was hoping for. You’ve both made excellent points.

I’m glad you think I’m looking at this from the Hawks’ perspective. I was actually worried that I might have a Toronto bias and I was wrong to think that the Hawks were building for a post-Kane/Toews future instead of trying to win another cup before those guys decline too much.

I get that the Leafs are giving up at least 4 years of Marner for only 2 years of Kane (which is one of the reasons it makes sense for Chicago). I’ve been thinking that their window is 3 years because that’s when Matthews will probably leave, so that is one year more than Kane’s contract. But to understand why I think this trade could make sense for Toronto, look at their sister team, the Raptors. After years of playoff disappointments they traded DeMar DeRozan – a cornerstone player who was signed for multiple years – for one year of Kawhi Leonard, and it got them an NBA championship. Hockey is not basketball, but Toronto will do anything for a Stanley Cup, and they want it now. If they think Kane is their Kawhi Leonard, I think they’d do it.
