A big reason why Duchene has had a bit of a resurgence the past few seasons is because of his transition to the wing. This wouldn’t be a good reason to sign him.

Leafs want to bring back Alex Kerfoot
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TMLBRIAN</b></div><div>Engvall was a solid player, I valued him more than Kerfoot. I thought we traded the wrong guy at the time. Murray is a good goalie but injured way too often to be reliable and for that cap, so I hope he is moved today. Holl is a decent dman, I think he has priced himself out of Toronto and I don't think he is what the Leafs need in the DCorp right now.
I also hope we sign Bert. I think he would be a perfect addition to our top 6. BUT I have a suspicion that Bert will not sign in Canada after the Covid/Vax Passport situation. Who knows though.
And for the record, I think the Leafs should move on from Kerfoot also BUT I wouldn't cry if we got him signed at 2m a year. But any more than 2.4m a year and I would not be please at all.</div></div>
Why are you so content with committing to the same group of players that have continued to fail when the core needs their production the most? I'd literally rather go into next season with Holmberg and McMann instead of Kerfoot and Kampf. Use that money to sign a different group of guys in that bottom six.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TMLBRIAN</b></div><div>Kampf was not put in a position to generate much offence and showed that he could when he was given the chance to. He almost always started defensive zone starts against the opposing teams top 6. His job was to not get scored on and to see if he could get the puck down the ice, so that our top 6 could start in the offensive zone. He did a fantastic job at that.
He actually generated some offence and pressure when is was in the offensive zone. It looks like its 2.4m x 4 years. Either way, I think it is money well spent. Very well spent actually.</div></div>
He's a good player. I see the good things he does. But I just don't think what he brings to this team is that difficult to replace. Maybe it takes a bit longer to find that guy who can bring that element. Either way, it just makes me confused when people are content with giving Kampf probably 500k-1M more than he's worth, but if Nylander asks for 500k-1M more then fans will want him traded.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Loops</b></div><div>If that is your take / scouting report on the quality player David Kampf is and what he brings to any team outside of his ability to put the puck in the net, then I am very afraid of what your expectations are for the Leafs. You don't often get access to one of the best defensive players in the League at that price. His work on the PK on jumping up and down from 3C to 4C all season easily makes him worth 2.5M a season. His line was arguably the most productive in the Florida series. Our top guys making North of 10m can't score and you are unhappy with a great depth signing for this team.... keyboard warriors I tell ya, know nothing about the game.</div></div>
Being able to provide offence is a very important aspect of the game when you're playing that many minutes. I think Kampf is a great player, but only if he was signed for less than 2 million a year. It just isn't efficient to spend that much money on Kampf given our cap situation. This makes it significantly more difficult to sign ROR while adding to other areas on the team, too. And depth scoring has probably been the biggest issue this team has faced consistently in the playoffs. It's obvious you can't always rely on 2/3 guys to score all your goals, but that's not to say they aren't worth having on the team. There's many other teams that have been able to find cheaper players that provide offence in their bottom-6.

He can play on their 3rd or 4th line easy. I am not too worried about his cap, even if he is on their "4th line". He will still play 14 minutes a night.
The Leafs can still sign ROR easily if they wanted.</div></div>
Maybe they could still sign ROR, but then what's the point of paying Kampf 2.5 a year for his play in defensive situations when ROR can bring that level of defence as well as offence. I'd much rather use that 2.5 towards ROR and just develop Holmberg to be our 4th centre. Not to mention signing O'Reilly now will make it significantly more difficult to improve the rest of the team after extending Willy and Auston.
I know 2.5 isn't much, but every dollar matters so much, and this just isn't an efficient way of spending it.

He's a fine player but he's soooo replaceable. Guys with his skillset aren't hard to find, and certainly aren't worth paying 2.5 million a year for. And again, I think this pretty much means that they see him as a 3C, which is not good.

Kampf is a one-dimensional fourth line centre that provides literally 0 offence whatsoever. Players with his skillset shouldn't be given 2.5 million AAV, especially for four years. What's even scarier is that this indicates that they will likely play him as their 3C for a few more years. This is just a terrible way to start new management and if this is a sign of things to come, I'm not sure how I'll be able to cheer for this team.

That doesn’t mean we can’t try to extend him. Brodie wouldn’t be an ideal person to keep beyond next season anyways. Hanifin is only 26 and his best years are ahead of him. Is that really all you have to say? Even if Hanifin was a rental, which would be very unlikely if we acquired him this off-season, he’d still put us in a much better position to win a Stanley cup then a 15 year old who might make the NHL one day and Michael Bunting.

That’s not necessarily true. History shows Americans are open to signing in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. At this point, it’s pretty unlikely they get a 23’ first for him. So a late 24’ first is probably a realistic centrepiece. Maybe it’s a 2nd round pick off, but a ‘meh’ return is likely given the situation.

With keeping ROR
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>. Sure you can trade away futures for and get marginally better but what's the point? And be going be this post, it doesn't work that well. ROR isn't signing for 3.5m. Rather have another winger that cost more than wasting 2.8m on Mantha. Really hopeful that McCann is every day player.
So maybe the answer is pay ROR 4.5, keep Bunting 4.5m. Sign a short term Dman at 2m. Gotta think the team is just as good as the one posted and you've kept the 1st, 3rd and Vogt.
Gee, can't agree with you that the Leafs should be worried when Matthews and Nylander are on the wrong side of 30. Let's imagine have set aside 23m for those two players next season, but whatever they sign elsewhere, then it's up to good GM to spend that 23m elsewhere wisely.
Same with Tavares and Marner...they may be gone in the summer of 2025. Not the end of the world, just sign other players.....but hopefully the Leafs have true NHLer on ELCs to help with the cap, maybe when McDavid signs with the Leafs on the wrong side of 30.</div></div>
I have no idea what your point is. If Matthews/Nylander/Marner could leave wouldn’t that make the need to win and trade away futures even more important?
And your alternative to trading for Hanifin is signing bunting to a similar cap hit, long-term, just so you can keep a few assets that won’t contribute anything towards winning the Stanley cup. Maybe you just don’t like/don’t know Hanifin as a player. He has legit top-pairing upside. A player like him doesn’t become available too often. And considering we’re in need of a difference maker in the top-4, especially since Brodie isn’t signed beyond this year, that makes this trade even more worth it than drafting a player that has a 10% chance of making it to the NHL.
And again, you’ve thrown out a number without giving an actual option. Who is this “2 million dollar defencman”? How would they fit on this team? How would they even improve this team? It’s hard to believe any 2 million dollar defenceman that’s acquired through FA would actually be an upgrade over timmins. Justin Holl will probably get 3+ on the market.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>It seems to be a new phenomenon on CapFrienldy that virtually every trade has an extension tied to it.
Glad you mentioned the Treveling trade with Tkachuk. Obviously Tkachuk wasn't resigning with the Flames so in effect it was a one year deal. Trevling made a excellent deal trading for Huberdeau, Weager and a first. But then he absolutely blew it, by making Huberdeau the second high paid left winger at 10,5m X 8, starting at the age of 30. Even Weager for eight years is iffy.
Wouldn't the Flames been much better off having one year of Hubie and Weager (maybe traded them at TDL) but never the less have 16.75m in cap instead of those two players.
I feel the same way with Hanifan....forcing an extension in order to justify a trade seems so unproductive . One reason the Leafs have been scrambling for years to be cap compliant is they have so few players players on ELCs. It always trading away picks and then trying to find cheap aging UFAs to fill the roster.</div></div>
You make a good point about not having enough players on ELCs. Having said that, I’m sure you’re well aware that a 1st round pick (a late one at that) doesn’t equal a young NHL player on an ELC. And even if it did, in this specific case, that player that’s drafted in 2024 likely wouldn’t even be a quality NHL player until Matthews, Marner, and Nylander are on the wrong side of 30.
You also mention that there are other ways to spend 5 million in free agency for a quality player without giving up assets, but you don’t mention any of those options. I’d honestly like you to mention who exactly it is that we can sign for Hanifins cap hit and who would bring the same level of play. I wouldn’t even be surprised if you didn’t respond to this because the answer is very obvious.

If you want a guy that would compliment Rielly then Mayfield would be a good short-term option (he's already 30). But it's important to note that Rielly isn't a true #1 guy and trying to force him into that role because he's "supposed" to be that guy isn't a good idea.

Nylander has probably passed the threshold of being a player that you would be content with trading for just a top 4 defenceman. Maybe value-wise, especially considering Nylander has 1 year left, it would make a fair deal. But solid top-4 D like Parayko can be acquired for much less than giving up a full year of an elite top-6 40 goal scoring winger on a bargain contract.
Call me crazy, but I'd rather just treat Nylander as a self-rental instead of swapping him for a top 4 D. If we want a top 4 D we can just trade for one without including Nylander and then just ice the best roster possible. We're pretty much trading futures for a full year of Nylander, which is fine, since those futures likely would've been used on a much worse player at the TDL anyways. Either way, I'm not saying this is what the Leafs should do, but in the case of swapping him for a top-4 D, this is what I'd rather do instead.

Leafs 2024 managing the cap
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsfan98</b></div><div>It's more of a placeholder... For this year... I'd rather Necas at 3 than Marner at 10.9 just because that's 60-65% of the total player for 30% of the cost. Pro. should have said Carlsson but you get what I mean and again, for this year and prob. the years after, Lindholm will be cheaper than Marner by at least 2 mill. for 80-85% of the player Marner is... As we've seen with every sports team (NHL included), it's about the best 23 man team, not the best 5 man team</div></div>
The issue is you keep mentioning this cap space that can be used to acquire some player(s) that will perform to the contracts they are paid, no matter what. Players like Necas are paid less because they aren't as good. I'm not sure how hard that is to understand. I mean, you clearly do undestand since you said it. So I'm not sure what your point is. You can literally say that about any player ever. Should the Oilers trade Hyman for Kerfoot because he produces 50% while making 50% less?
The bottom line is no team trades a 100 point selke-level winger and becomes better. And not that this matters, but suggesting that acquiring Elias Lindholm, a player that's on the verge of getting overpaid and is objectively worse than Marner in every facet of hockey, will make this team better because he costs ~3 million less is honestly revolting. Not sure how you can even call yourself a Leaf fan.

I don't think Rielly-Schenn is a capable top-pair throughout the regular season. That's why I listed them as a third pair. The whole thing with the Leafs defence is that we don't (and likely will never) have a true #1 defenceman. It's pretty much impossible to have a pairing that can play those big minutes in all situations without that guy. Acquiring a guy like Hanifin pretty much allows us to have 3 pairings that would all be good/great 2nd pairings on other teams. It's better than trying to convince yourself Morgan Rielly is a #1 guy and playing him 25 minutes a night.
This is essentially the best way to compensate for not having a #1 D, in my opinion.

The most realistic and HAVE TO read description
Of course fans are going to watch Vegas and say "big = win", but completely neglect the fact that the main reason they won was because they acquired a superstar centre. The Panthers only made it as far as they did because they acquired a superstar in Tkachuck (and got timely goaltending from Bob).
Anyways, most Leafs fans want to associate getting big with trading one of the core 4. Not saying that's what you want to do, but I know for a fact most fans are going to think trading Marner/Nylander so we can sign two defenceman that are 6'4 and can't skate is the solution.
I also don't like the idea of trading for Pesce. I've explained it many times on this site before and don't wanna type it all out again. In short, his best years are behind him (even though he's still good), will cost a lot to acquire, and will command a massive extension.
