We went on Christmas Vacation early ;)
In all seriousness nobody can question Marner's importance now as without him the PK and defense at times has been a shaky lul.
No concerns though as Keefe gonna reign them back in for Thursday against Tampa. Probs will also get Dermott back to which will help on the back end third pairing.</div></div>
I actually really liked Rubins game, he has a heavy shot and is able to get it on net. Kinda does a lot of the things Dermott does. It’s early goings but I liked what I saw from him

I hope the Leafs call up Kurtis Gabriel for that game!

Thread:
What is Marner's acutal trade value
I don’t think the Leafs should trade Marner. I just don’t see much potential for a deal that would improve the team.
Marner is one of those players that everybody wants but nobody can afford. Regardless of whether they think he’s overpaid, few teams can take on a cap hit of almost $11M. Even if they’re sending somebody in the $8-9M range the other way, they’re not going to take on that extra cap hit for nothing. Marner would have to be an upgrade for them, which means a downgrade for Toronto. His salary (mostly signing bonuses) over the remainder of his contract is actually significantly less than his cap hit, but that really only matters to teams that don’t want to spend to the cap. For most teams it’s not the money that matters; it’s the cap hit.
Assuming the Leafs want to get a player of comparable ability back for him – there’s no point in dumping him just to free up cap space if they don’t use that cap space to improve the team – the possibilities are limited. I can think of four scenarios that could work, in theory:
1) Another player with a cap hit of $10M or more
Most of these players are over 30 with no-move clauses, many of those with contracts that are likely to outlast their elite level of play. Other than Jack Eichel, the rest are either untouchables (McDavid and Panarin) or already on the Leafs.
2) A big-name restricted free agent whose team is having difficulty signing him
If the player is demanding $10M, his team might see Marner as a safer investment for that price since the younger guys haven’t yet reached his level of consistent year-by-year production. (For the same reason, the Leafs might not be interested in such a deal since their focus is on the present.) Trouble is, the only guys I can think of who might fit this category are both owned by Vancouver, and if they trade one of them for Marner they won’t have cap room to sign the other one. Brady Tkachuk would be next on that list, and Ottawa is one of the few teams that wouldn’t mind Marner’s high cap hit, but I’d want more than Tkachuk for Marner.
3) A player with less term on his contract
Marner has 4 years before he can become an unrestricted free agent. If a team has a similarly skilled player with only 2 or 3 years until unrestricted free agency, that extra term might be appealing and worth taking on some extra cap hit for. However, there’s only a couple of comparable players who fit that description, and those players are a better fit for their current team than Marner would be, so their teams are probably better off keeping them and trying to extend them when the time comes.
4) Part of a package
A 2-for-2 deal might be their best chance of getting good value for Marner. They wouldn’t get a player as good as Marner, but the combination of a downgrade on Marner and an upgrade on somebody else might improve the team if you think that moving away a bit from their top-heavy strategy and going for more balance would lead to playoff success.

Like if the leafs bottom 6 not including jason spezza just died in a car crash(no i dont want them to) i wouldnt hate that top 6 as a bottom 6 for the leafs.
and if derms and sandin were hurt i wouldnt hate Teemu and Liljegren in on the 3rd pairing.

Dubas Drafted players only
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>draft_em_sign_em_trade_em</b></div><div>You do know the reason Hunter drafted players aren't succeeding. Because once Dubas toke over he halted all of Hunter's prospects development to concentrate on his drafted players and his Euro/Russian FA signings.
This happens all the time in the NHL, new GM or new coach comes in and wipes clear the previous management's work.
Also stop pretending Dubas was not involved in the 2015 Draft process, he had a voice in the room.</div></div>
Of course you are a Hunter fan. All good. The Leafs drafting are in better hands now. Thankful for Dubas.

Rob Blake Trade Deadline Very Active
Rielly’s value if traded with an extension is more than that.
What you have seen on here does not equal his actual value, let alone with an extension.
Something like Kempe + Walker + 3rd would be way closer. And that may be slightly generous considering the Ristolainen trade.
Edit: let me explain a little more here.
Kempe = mid-late 1st.
Walker = mid-late 2nd.
3rd rounder.
Ristolainen without an extension got a top 15 pick (14th, technically 13th) and a mid-late second.
Rielly without an extension should get more than that. However, Kempe is an RFA so that adds a bit of value.
To LA:
Morgan Rielly
To TOR:
Adrian Kempe
Sean Walker
2022 3rd round pick
That is pretty close to what a “fair” Rielly deal looks like.
Now if we add the extension with LA as part of the deal the value goes up.
If LA plans on being competitive it could look something like this:
To LA:
Morgan Rielly
To TOR
Adrian Kempe
Sean Walker
2022 1st round pick*
*Conditional pick: If LA fails to make the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs they can decide to send their own 2023 1st rounder to Toronto instead*

If Kerfoot is being traded it will be a hockey deal not a trade creating cap space.

I read this and thought it was completely ridiculous as well. The teams the author was trading Larkin to didn't really make sense at all. I don't see Ottawa really paying a price for Larkin. Don't see Canucks wanting to give up Pettersson. Don't see Eichel being an option in Detroit. And Toronto? Really?

1) Marner was greedy and cared about himself over the team. You don't keep those type of players in your locker room
2) Lou would sign Matthews, a star player, to either a bridge deal or 8 year term. Look at what he did with Barzal. Matthews is walking in a few years
3) Nylander contract is good. I will give him that
4) JT at $11M at the age of 34/35 is not good. Lets be real, he did not take a discount
5) Leafs would have loved to have Kadri when he put up 15+ points in his first season with the Avs during the playoffs
