So today, the long-awaited trade where the Coyotes send one of their defenseman to another team happened, a true blockbuster that will shake the trade market to it's core and cause teams to quiver in their boots - Dysin Mayo was traded to Vegas for a fifth round pick and an LTIR contract.

So my immediate thoughts when I saw this was that this was a very even trade - Dysin Mayo... isn't very good, Weber ensures we are above the cap floor depending on who we sell, and the 5th is just a throw-in. After more research, I really like the ramifications of this trade for the Coyotes - IF they do one thing, which I will discuss down below.

So Shea Weber's contract runs until the end of the 25-26 season worth 7.857M per year AAV wise - in actual salary, it is a measly 1 million dollars for the next 3 seasons plus whatever remains for this season. Since the NHL focuses on AAV when calculating cap hit, it makes perfect sense for a team who wants to hit the floor without having to pay top dollar to do so. Contrary to popular belief, the Coyotes have an owner who does spend money - ask our GM about the revamped scouting department that he can hire whoever for and gets whatever resources he wants from ownership for it. In fact, this contract is exactly the same salary as Dysin Mayo so when it comes to actual money spent it doesnt make a difference at all. The main thing is that this allows us to sell more than Chychrun. Arizona is currently 5.4M above the cap floor, so selling Chychrun will keep us above it but barely. Shea Weber gives us a lot more room to sell more pieces if the Coyotes want to. Overall a very easy LTIR contract to acquire which has been the team's bread and butter for the past several seasons (which I am actually a huge fan of and don't understand why more teams do this).

As for Dysin Mayo ... a 2023 5th is a good return for him. His ceiling at this point is just a 7th defenseman, so we aren't really losing anything. This allows us to give AHL top pairing minutes to more valuable prospects while also opening up another slot down in Tucson. I mean, he was on the opening roster and played fine last year, but when you get outplayed by Patrik Nemeth, Josh Brown and Troy Stecher then you really shouldn't be in the NHL at all. If he proves people wrong then we honestly aren't losing much because he never would have done anything on this team regardless of what opportunities he got. As for the pick itself, it honestly is just another player to grab. Bill Armstrong has said he likes a lot of the later picks in this draft because of the depth, but most GMs say that so I won't take it at face value.

The thing I dislike about this trade is that we gave away a defenseman, which is the position this organization most desperately needs. If this team sells Chychrun and Gostisbehere as well then we have basically nothing in the pipeline and it desperately needs to be restocked. The only D prospects we have that actually may become something are Vladislav Kolyachonok who has gotten playing time but needs more development time down in Tucson and Maveric Lamoureux, who has a lot of promise and was a massive project to begin with but is a few years away from the big leagues. If this team trades for young D players with term or on an ELC or just D prospects in general then this point can be completely disregarded; however, I do think it is a big concern down the line. This team does have 3 third round picks this year (the Islanders one doesn't show on Capfriendly due to being a conditional pick), so you could easily grab 2 or 3 within the top 100 draft slots this year but it absolutely needs to be addressed.

Overall, Vegas gets a depth piece while Arizona gets long-term cap flexibility at deadlines if they ever have to sell, a late pick in a draft with lots of depth and more time down in Tucson for more worthwhile prospects to develop. I'm a big fan of this trade and expect more down the line with all of this extra AAV to keep us at the floor.

Hello, it is I once again, one of 7 Coyotes fans who exist. In a world with a hard salary cap and guaranteed contracts, making sure every dollar counts is essential in this hockey economy. However, there are some contracts out there that fail to do so. The current regime (and even the previous regime to an extent) of the Coyotes have abused that fact to get some assets from other teams for essentially nothing. With an owner willing to spend whatever the hell the current GM of the team wants, and said GM being a master at swindling bad front offices, and the fact that the team is several years away from being consistently competitive and can afford to be bad in the short-term, here are some "cap dumps" for the Coyotes to target over the rest of the year.

To other fans visiting, I am not 100% familiar with every team's cap and contract situation; most of this was gathered by information from CapFriendly and the general consensus I have seen and heard from other NHL fans about their own teams. If you feel like I am being disingenuous about a contract, I apologize in advance and feel free to correct me. Also, I am not going to list any return value because I will leave that to Bill Armstrong the Wizard to handle.

So first off, not every team has bad contracts; or rather, they do not have the need to get rid of any. Teams in deep rebuilds or with tons of cap space may not feel the need to get rid of any of their bad contracts. Also, if a contract isn't very good value wise but only has a year left on it, they may as well at that point bite the bullet and let it expire in the offseason and keep any assets that they have. With that said, if a contending team desperately needs cap space, they would be willing to move assets to give up a 1 year stinker to make room for someone useful in their lineup. These are the cap dumps I have identified that the Coyotes should try to get their hands on:

VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS
G Laurent Brossoit - 1 Year, 2.325M AAV (1.2M buried cap penalty), UFA
C Nolan Patrick - 1 Year, 1.2M AAV, LTIR RFA

The Golden Knights are using up a lot of cap right now and are under the ceiling thanks to LTIR, but that's not going to last forever. Plus, Vegas always seems to make massive moves at the deadline, and they will need all the space they can get to afford whatever shiny new player they buy. Brossoit will alleviate a little bit of cap for them and wouldn't cost them too much to get rid of to begin with. Patrick will simply open up a contract spot since it doesn't seem like he's going to play anymore.

EDMONTON OILERS
RW Jesse Puljujarvi - 1 Year, 3M AAV, RFA
W Warren Foegele - 2 Years, 2.75M AAV, UFA

Puljujarvi seems to desperately need a change of scenery from Edmonton. He has been in the dog house with coaches and fans alike, and takes up a decent bit of cap for a team wanting to go far in the playoffs. The Coyotes could take him as a reclamation project and give him a cheap extension in the offseason or even trade his rights to a team. As for Foegele, he is a servicable bottom 6 forward but those are not worth 2.75M per year, especially with term. Perhaps the Coyotes could get both in one go; or perhaps they could get both along with other assets in a Chychrun trade to get an even bigger haul? Regardless, these two should be targets, especially Puljujarvi while his value is way low.

VANCOUVER CANUCKS
LW Tanner Pearson - 2 Years, 3.25M AAV, UFA (7 team NTC)
RD Tucker Poolman - 3 Years, 2.5M AAV, UFA

I highly doubt that Vancouver would consider trading with us again given what happened last time, but if they do, these two should be on the block. Both are currently on LTIR which would make it much easier to trade for if you're Arizona, but would make it less of a necessity to trade as of now if you're Vancouver. This would be better done in the offseason. The question is whether or not the Canucks would even trade them to begin with - the Horvat trade they did today signals a rebuild (which they desperately need), but if they decide that instead they are going for a retool then they may want to offload these contracts. Poolman especially, that is a terrible one and should fetch a pretty penny.

PHILADELPHIA FLYERS
LW Nicolas Deslauriers - 4 Years, 1.75M AAV, UFA (20 team NTC)
RD Ryan Ellis - 5 Years, 6.25M AAV, LTIR

Once again, I am not sure that the Flyers would be willing to trade with us given what happened last time, but if they do these two should be on the table. The team has openly said they are retooling so I do think they'd consider trading away some assets to give away certain contracts. First up, I knew the Deslauriers contract was bad but wow I had no idea it was THIS BAD. A 20 team NTC for 4 years? That's absolutely terrible. I doubt he'd be willing to waive it to come to Arizona but if he does the team should be able to get a lot of assets out of grabbing that contract. As for Ellis, I do not know if he is LTIRetired. If so I wouldn't mind grabbing this because, once again, it should fetch a pretty penny for us to take. If it ages even more terribly, the Coyotes could buy it out in 2025 or 2026 for a negligible cap penalty for a few seasons.

ST. LOUIS BLUES
LD Marco Scandella - 2 Years, 3.275M AAV, UFA (7 team NTC)

I highly doubt this one would happen given the Blues trajectory (they should retool in the offseason), but if they do I believe the Coyotes should try for this contract. I don't think it would fetch too large of a return, plus with a 7 team NTC it's not a guarantee of happening even if the did try, but any assets is a plus.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS
RW Kasperi Kapanen - 2 Years, 3.2M AAV, UFA

Another excellent buy-low candidate, the Penguins are trying to maximize their window with Crosby and Malkin and Kapanen is not playing very well given his contract. As opposed to a cap dump, we could trade one of our useful forwards for Kapanen+more.

NEW JERSEY DEVILS
W Andreas Johnsson - 1 Year, 3.4M AAV (2.275M buried cap penalty), UFA
G Jonathon Bernier - 1 Year, 4.125M AAV, LTIR

I highly doubt the Devils would pull the trigger on getting rid of Johnsson; if they were smart they'd let the contracts expire and then use that cap space in the offseason. However, if they wanted to add a big piece, the Johnsson contract would be alleviate 2.275M dollars for the cap, so that would be a good one to grab. There really isn't a need to drop Bernier but I included him anyway.

BOSTON BRUINS
LD Mike Reilly - 2 Years, 3M AAV (1.875M buried cap penalty), UFA
C Chris Wagner - 1 Year, 1.35M AAV (225K buried cap penalty), UFA

Once again I don't see the need for Boston to do this. I don't see the need for them to make any trades with how dominant they are this season. If they wanted to free up 2.1M in cap space however, the Coyotes should ask about these two.

SAN JOSE SHARKS
D Marc-Edouard Vlasic - 4 Years, 7M AAV, UFA (3 team NMC)

There are plenty of contracts with too much term and too much money on the Sharks and this is the only one I would feasibly take if I were the Coyotes. 7 million is a lot of money AAV wise to take for 4 years but the return might be worth it. I doubt the Sharks would trade Vlasic and just let his contract expire or buy him out.

LOS ANGELES KINGS
G Cal Petersen - 3 Years, 5M AAV (3.875M buried cap penalty) (10 team NTC), UFA
W Austin Wagner - 1 Year, 1.133M AAV (8.3K buried cap penalty), RFA

Wagner is more there as a joke honestly, an 8.3K cap penalty is nothing for a single season, but every dollar counts I guess? Anyway, the big fish here is Petersen. The Kings gave him a big contract for his play and then he immediately fell off of a cliff. 3.875M is a lot of dead cap hit, especially for 3 seasons. Given the Coyotes track record with goaltending, I would absolutely be willing to take Petersen with the hopes of revitalizing his play. I bet he'd be willing to waive his NTC too if it meant getting playing time in the NHL.

DALLAS STARS
G Anton Khudobin - 1 Year, 3.33M AAV (2,208,3M buried cap penalty), UFA

If the Stars wanted to go all in, 2.2 million in extra cap would go a long way in that goal. With that said, I know the Stars love having Khudobin in the minors to be a leader on their AHL team so I don't think this one would happen, even though it makes a lot of sense for them to do.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS
LW Kyle Palmieri - 3 Years, 5M AAV, UFA (16 team NTC)
LW Ross Johnston - 4 Years, 1.1M AAV, UFA
W Richard Panik - 1 Year, 1.375M AAV (250K buried cap penalty), UFA

The Islanders are not in a good cap situation, especially for a bubble team. Palmieri has been massively underproducing since coming to New York but I doubt he'd waive his NTC to come to Arizona but it'd be worth a shot. I do not understand how Ross Johnston got a 4 year deal (at least its not as bad as Deslauriers), but 1.1M would be easy for the Coyotes to swallow. Panik doesn't really affect their cap that much but 250K matters if they want to try and get more pieces like Horvat. Just looking at their CapFriendly page there are a lot of options ripe for the taking, but I doubt the Islanders would do any of these to begin with since they are competing for a playoff spot.

OTTAWA SENATORS
RD Nikita Zaitsev - 2 Years, 4.5M AAV, UFA (10 team NTC)

The Senators have been extremely open with wanting to move Zaitsev and willing to pay a price. Honestly I'm shocked the Coyotes haven't traded for him sooner. Once again, you could send Chychrun the other way for assets and grab Zaitsev as well for even more assets. This is probaly the most likely cap dump trade to happen of everything I have listed.

DETROIT RED WINGS
LW Jakub Vrana - 2 Years, 5.25M AAV (4.125M buried cap penalty), UFA
Alex Nedljkovic - 1 Year, 3M AAV (1.875M buried cap penalty), UFA

I don't think Detroit needs to shed any salary, they'd be better off waiting for these to expire. However if they really wanted to dump Vrana I would absolutely be willing to.

There were some I noted but didn't list because I didn't see the point due to negligible cap gain but I will put them here anyway:
C Kevin Rooney, Calgary Flames - 2 Year, 1.3M AAV (150K buried cap penalty) UFA. Very negligible cap penalty but every dollar matters!
W Vinnie Hinostroza - 1 Year, 1.7M AAV, UFA and W Anders Bjork - 1 Year, 1.6M AAV, UFA for the Buffalo Sabres with a 575K and 475K buried cap penalty respectively. No need for the Sabres to shed cap since they have so much already.

Of all the trades I listed, the most likely to happen to me in my opinion are:
Nikita Zaitsev, Ottawa (this one is basically guaranteed, like I said, surprised it hasn't happened yet)
Cal Petersen, Los Angeles
Kasperi Kapanen, Pittsburgh
Laurent Brossoit & Nolan Patrick, Vegas
Jesse Puljujarvi and/or Warren Foegele, Edmonton
Andreas Johnsson, New Jersey
Mike Reilly & Chris Wagner, Boston

WHOOPS another long text wall, but as the token Coyotes fan on this website I want to throw stuff like this out into the forums every now and again just to drum up interest and let people know some of the general consensus within our fanbase is. If you see anything in here that is wrong or inaccurate please leave a comment.

1. Your team
Arizona Coyotes

2. Whether your team is a buyer, seller, or something in-between
Seller with one of the most valuable assets on the market

3. Your team's needs this deadline
Picks in the high rounds and young NHL players as opposed to prospects. If it is prospects, defensemen would be the priority.

4. Your team's potential trade chips this deadline

In order of value:
A) Jakob Chychrun is the massive one. Guy is good offensively and defensively which makes him very valuable. The asking price has been 2 firsts and an A tier prospect which I do think gets met at the deadline.
B) Shayne Gostisbehere is interesting because he is a UFA and if we were to retain 50% would only be 2.25M for a 50-60 point Dman. That sounds like it would be very valuable but he makes so many stupid turnovers and mistakes in his own zone that it really brings his value down. I would say a 2nd/3rd and a couple of late rounders should get the job done if we choose not to re-sign him.
C)Nick Bjugstad has been fantastic for us. Great leader, knack for big goals, can play anywhere in the forward lineup, great at faceoffs, he is the ideal deadline pickup that a lot of teams look for. He is also a cheap UFA (900K). It's probably my bias as a fan but depending on the market I could see a team giving a 2nd for him straight up.
D)Josh Brown is apparently being looked at by other teams? I read it from Elliotte Friedman but if a team wants to trade for him they are more than welcome to. 1.275M for this season and the next, very physical defensemen so maybe a 4th at most, I really don't see why anyone would trade for him, he's not very good.
E)our two UFAs, Troy Stecher (1.25M) and Nick Ritchie (2.5M). At most I could see a 4th but it would most likely be a 6th or something like that.
Bonus: Cap Space; with 17.5M in cap (and potentially more depending on who gets sold) we could easily particpate as a 3rd team to make salary work in a trade and get assets that way.

Hope this helps!

Yes, an actual Coyotes fan on this website. Most Yotes fans I know avoid any interaction here because it's all just "LOL POVERTY FRANCHISE" and "RELOCATE TO HOUSTON LMAO" and a bunch of other nonsense in every trade, signing or any thread involving us so we don't really participate because why bother. Anyway, GMBA is my favorite general manager this team has ever had because he actually has a plan and a vision which I can't say for any of our previous regimes. There have been plenty of things he's done which I have questioned and disagreed with as a fan of the team but I am very happy with what he has been doing. In my personal opinion, here are my 5 favorite moves that he has made as GM of the Arizona Coyotes.

1)Vancouver trade. Do I need to say anymore? This move changed the trajectory of two franchises so hard it's comical. I won't go into detail about the Canucks' situation because that's not the pont of this post, but OEL and Garland are not the core pieces we thought they would be when they were here in Arizona, and at best they are complementary pieces and the Coyotes avoiding those two contracts, ESPECIALLY's Oliver's is a win in itself. Add on the fact that we got assets for it and it's a steal. The 9th overall became Dylan Guenther which is good enough, but the 2nd they gave us was traded to Minnesota for Jack McBain, another rookie who looks great. Tack on another 7th for good measure and you got yourself an undeniable fleece of a trade.

2)Gostisbehere for nothing. Another absolute fleecing courtesy of the Philadelphia Flyers. Ghost is not the perfect defensemen, especially when it comes to playing in his own zone and has absolutely boneheaded turnovers, but man his presence in the offensive zone is insane. The fact that they gave us a 2nd and a 7th as well is nuts, especially since we can flip him at the deadline potentially and get even more assets out of it. Personally I wouldn't mind re-signing him for 2 years or so depending on the price; if he keeps up this play we could get even more for him further down the line.

3)Andrew Ladd for nothing. This one is a bit funny to me because I remember reading the Capfriendly thread about it and people labelling it as a "massive win" for the Islanders and laughing at us about it (gee, I wonder why Yotes fans don't post anything on this site) because apparently the Coyotes "didn't get enough out of it", which is strange considering we got 2 seconds and a third for free. Ladd was a good leader in the locker room last year and we will get that conditional third this draft thanks to his retirement, and getting all that draft capital would be good enough on its own but man we put it to good use. The main part is the 2021 2nd round pick which ended up being 60th overall; that pick ended up being JJ Moser, who is easily our most solid and consistent defenseman every game. He is good in all situations; he isn't a prospect at this point, he is a full time NHL player and is really good at it as well. Speaking of which...

4)Valimaki waiver claim. This was a low-risk claim to begin with, a former first round pick with injury troubles is always a good reclamation project to acquire, but I had no idea how good he would actually be. Another solid defensemen who perfectly complements Moser and the duo is easily our top pairing of the future. I enjoy the contract he was given today; very low-risk and very very high reward if he continues this level of play. If he does with the contract we gave him next season expect a long-term deal.

5)Vejmelka signing. This one is the most surprising on this list, nobody expected this. When he was signed, I and most other Coyotes fans thought that he was just a guy who was brought in to allow as many goals as possible to get the highest pick possible via losing, but he has been great. The first season here he showed flashes of brilliance and us Yotes fans thought that if he could just get more consistency, he would be a solid starting goaltender, and this year he has taken massive strides in that direction. I am very excited for his future on the team and he's actually the next jersey that I want to buy.

There are plenty of honorable mentions especially regarding the cap dump trades, I'll mention two specifically: Kolyachonok (good D prospect) and a 2024 2nd from Florida for a 2023 7th just to get Anton Stralman's contract off the books for them; and two different 7th round picks: Ben McCartney in the 2020 draft and Sam Lipkin in the 2021 draft. The former is one of the best players on our AHL team and Lipkin was on the USA team at the WJC this year, which is great mileage out of some 7th rounds picks who usually dont amount to much.

WHOOPS this was a very long textwall but I am very happy about having Bill Armstrong as our GM, the guy is fantastic and has pulled off the most one-sided trades I have ever seen not just in Coyotes history but in recent NHL history; that Vancouver trade genuinely has potential to go down as one of the biggest fleecings ever seen in the NHL. For the first time in a long time I am genuinely excited and hopeful for the future of this franchise.
