Again you need a team that needs a Top6 center, has the cap space for Giroux and is a team that Giroux feels like can contend for a cup. How many teams fit this criteria?</div></div>
He may not even get traded

If he only choose 2-3 teams and none of them are willing to cough up a 1st then either PHI can simply not trade him (and maybe he leaves in FA for nothing) or Giroux can expand the list of teams he'd be willing to go to, but he may not land with a team that has a great chance of winning a cup (the whole reason he'd want to be moved).
As for Bergeron, sure we'd love to first, but if no one is offering it then do you just keep him or do you lower your expectation in a return.</div></div>
There will be teams willing to give up a 1st, not many times players of his caliber become available. Philly will want to move him than risk losing him in FA unless they have mutual agreement that he would resign.

While that maybe true, I don’t think Philly will just give him up for a Hall return. They are going to want a 1st for a player of his caliber. He’s been the face of the franchise for years. I look at it as if the Bruins ever tried to trade Bergeron; we would all certainly want a 1st and a valuable player as well as other assets. Giroux has been almost a point per game player his career. I just think even if he has control over his destination, he won’t screw over the franchise he’s been with his whole career; He will give them a list and in the end Philly will choose the team out of the bunch with the best return.

Sweeney overpaid for Rick Nash and I think Giroux is a better all around player. Teams know that Boston swindled Buffalo for Hall with the return, even though Hall forced his way here, Boston could offer anything. Teams know that Boston needs a 2C and a top 4 D. Sweeney will have to pay this deadline if they plan to get out of the 1st rounder, even if they make the playoffs.

DeBrusk has a high ceiling as well. Just because the Bruins took him higher than he was projected doesn’t mean he’s any lower value wise compared to Dvorak. I understand Dvorak has been on bad Arizona teams, but still I think both could use a change of scenery. He’s not worth a 1st, him and DeBrusk have similar value. DeBrusk has shown high end skills even individually. Just like with any teams with all stars; they make those around them better. If Dvorak was in Boston with Hall I could see him as a 50-60 point player. Aside from this past season DeBrusk has been able to score just about 20 goals and close to 40 points and looking at Dvorak’s career he’s very similar. Boston needs centers now and DeBrusk is expendable as Hall is signed for 4 years.

I would just swap Moore for Wagner. Yotes need the defense anyway</div></div>
Moore would clear more cap space, but because of the higher cap hit and the injury history I’m afraid they would have to send a second rounder to move him. Although a second isn’t as valuable as a 1st, their prospect pool still needs some higher end talent in development. They did well in this draft, but that second will be low and I think they’d rather draft and develop someone and see or trade them later. They were lucky to get Hall for a 2nd because he used his NMC to force his way to Boston and held leverage.

I agree with all of that. I just would be very surprised if Foligno is on the 4th line. Since he can play all 3 forward positions I expect he will play center because he has more experience and is more defensive minded. There are so many options now so I’m curious to see how Butchy will draw up the line up each game! The defense kind of scares me a bit because one hit and Carlo is out and the left side is alright, but against Tampa’s top 4 Boston isn’t close in terms of talent. They can grind it out, but still.

Oh I know it is, but if they had over $20 million in cap space with the window just about closed on the core they would have been lining up FAs and making trades to win now…. It feels more like they are just standing pat; patch the holes and hope for the best… not sacrifice the future because he can’t give up DeBrusk. DeBrusk is the only valuable player he got in his botched 2015 draft, which set the organization back years in terms of youth and high end replacements for the core. They may not be in a cap crunch, but they are certainly not ready to rebuild or go the extra length to be a true cup contender.

Sweeney is staying very quiet, he kept saying they want a big LD. So far I’ve seen them all go in trades and not to Boston. Chicago just traded 6’6 LD Nikita Zadorov with a cap hit of $3.2 to Calgary for a 3rd….. And Sweeney didn’t want to match it. Today will be underwhelming. Word is they are in on Coleman, but he’s looking for 5-6x $5-5.5 million and Boston already has the Charlie Coyle contract for that 3rd line that they are already regretting.

With them resigning Reilly for $3 million I don’t think they will go for an older D, they didn’t even want to extend Chara because they wanted to get younger on the backend, so I don’t see them throwing money at a 36 year old who wants term and $4-5 million. Other teams are more desperate so they will pay an older experienced D that money, but Boston won’t. I’m not being a Debbie downer, I’ve seen what this team has done in years past and they have a simple formula; get steals in the draft by going off the board, resign own players to team friendly contracts, make a few moves to get to at least round 2 of the playoffs, promise that they will change, pray Bergeron keeps playing at an elite level, patch work holes with those from within, and repeat.

There is but Boston has always put themselves into situations where they have to overpay for mediocrity out of desperation. They are unwilling to give up prospects and or high picks to get stud players. They will try to be cheap with it. They started with over $20 million in cap space and resigned Hall and Reilly and will be resigning Krejci. I’m just being realistic given what I’ve seen from them over the years.

Suter will end up with the Islanders most likely. The Bruins are notorious for overpaying when desperate. I agree the money could be used else where, but given this teams track record I’m not confident; most cap space in a long time with a decent chunk of the vital players intact and they will just add “depth” pieces to say they did something so they don’t go into the season with over $8 million in cap space. I do not believe they will get a shutdown, quality LD. They will get a 3rd pairing Dman, maybe a bottom 6 forward, a backup goalie for cheap money and will be average, and they will wing it. Same old song and dance.

Boston is out on Suter, no way they give him 4x$4-4.5 million. Also they will have to overpay for Goligoski because it will be a competitive market, even if it’s not for that much they still won’t do much to improve this team. Same old song and dance.

I agree, but given what has been happening the last few days, it doesn’t seem like they will do much. They will most likely overpay for Goligoski because the market will be competitive for Dmen. They will want to go cheap on goalie and because they had Martin Jones briefly they may circle back to him, although they could sign Holtby too. I don’t see them getting a stud LD. They will get the scraps of FA and will say that they feel confident with what they have in house and that last year gave the young guys experience and they will be better prepared for this coming season and the usual song and dance. They said they needed to shake things up and get bigger, tougher, and skilled; yet they’ve resigned their own guys; Hall is good, Reilly is ok, but DeBrusk will be given another chance and they will go with the same old same old. Don’t be shocked if nothing significant happens.

You would think that, but the core has been aging for years and other than 2019 they haven’t made it out of the second round. They know the core is getting older and the farm system is one of the worst in the league, but they don’t want to go all in and do it. It’s the same excuse every year; we don’t want to give up licks, gotta keep all the Bjroks and Debrusks and hope they pan out until they have no value like Caron. They need to draft better, develop better, and not have a situation where they have to overpay to try to make a run and have it blow in their faces because Bergeron and Krejci are one big hit away from being out long term and only the first line can score.

I agree, however with such a reasonable cap hit, I can’t see why other teams like CAR, MTL, or STL would pass up the opportunity to add a player with such a low cap hit who can be a decent depth piece. BOS will most likely have to overpay for any deal they make given the landscape of the league.
