If you want Jenner

It's funny how people can't look at actual trades that have occurred in the NHL and understand how teams value guys like Boone Jenner.

If you want Jenner, you need to be prepared to make and offer that will make the entire hockey world ridicule you and think you're insane, similar to the Jeannot trade to TBL. No way CBJ even come close to considering this.

CBJ Leafs
The CBJ trade is pitiful. The last thing they need is more prospects and middling players. If they deal Jenner it would be for a stupid massive haul, and Provorov will probably bring back a 1st+ at the deadline next year on his own.
Not to mention, to "clear cap" you're dealing the two best veteran contracts on the team, but neither have significant enough term to justify signing Lindholm long-term. If that was the logic they would be dealing Laine, Gudbranson, Severson or Merzlikins.

I get that Gud fills a role for Columbus, but I think the team is much tougher than it was three years ago when that need became apparent. He's okay right now, but he's got two more years left after this so I think getting out from Gud's contract now would be a win, especially considering the log-jam at RD and Peeke and Boqvist not having much real interest right now.
Also, I think the addition of Samsonov would allow them to move Elvis to EDM also.

Please do. You'll get two wings and a RHD who are all skilled but one-dimensional and soft in exchange for a two-way borderline 1C. It's a good deal for both sides.

At least not for another (about to be) overpaid winger. I don't believe anyone is truly untouchable, but it would take a very high-level center coming back for CBJ to move either of those guys.

Rumors and Speculation
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jazzykiwi</b></div><div>The Lindholm trade only works if he's willing to resign in Col. Something he may not be willing to do. They've always had trouble luring FAs and are perpetually bad</div></div>
Right, I suspect that he would if the price is right. It's mostly about money for these guys. Not always and not exclusively, but at the end of the day, money talks.
The bit about not signing FAs is not really true. Since Jarmo arrived they signed Nathan Horton who was a big fish at the time, Brandon Saad extended after a trade from CHI, Gus Nyquist, and Johnny Gaudreau among some others. However, they've made it clear that their goal was to try to build through the draft the "right way."
They had a good run of success with the Foligno-led Jackets, but rightly blew that up before they were all too old when it was clear they didn't have enough to get over the hump.
Maybe if Panarin stayed they would've kept that corps together and made a deeper push, but they made the right call and are now loaded with dynamic, young talent and have a decent group of vets as well to lead them. The roster isn't finished though. The kids still need time to mature and Jarmo still has to find another top center. Obviously Gaudreau and Laine have to get going too, but they are too good of players to stay stuck in a slump for too long. Gaudreau has already started playing much better in recent weeks. Now Laine needs to get going.

Laine for Kuz doesn't make sense for CBJ. Laine is much younger with a higher ceiling and another year of term beyond Kuz. CBJ aren't going to sell low on him to get worse for two years. If they are going to trade for a center, they need someone with defensive prowess like Lindholm.

Laine for Kadri
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>squashmaple</b></div><div>It doesn't help that the Jackets seem loath to put him in a position to succeed, too.</div></div>
Absolutely. The coaching hasn't been as bad as it was under Larsen, but there are still plenty of questionable decisions being made. Now they have him playing high on the right side of the PP, where he still stands around and has no shot opportunities. I don't understand why it's so hard to do what has proven to work in the past and just stick with it. Park him on the left dot and tell him to one time it every time he gets a puck in position to do so.

Laine for Kadri
I wouldn't mind Kadri honestly, but only if he comes at a much cheaper price. CBJ shouldn't be selling low on Laine, but I do think they should move on from him next summer. I've seen enough in his 3 years in Columbus to know that he just isn't a player we need. Immensely talented, but he just doesn't have the competitive drive or physical nature needed to win.
Our wings are soft. Thankfully, Voronkov showed up in a big way to help with that, but I think Laine needs to go as well. If he rebounds this season and gets back to decent form, he should be able to garner a 1st + from some team at or near the draft.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>squashmaple</b></div><div>We'll just keep Laine, thanks. Three less years. Immediately clicked with Fantilli on a personal level. His brain is still scrambled from that dirty hit by Andersson, so there's no reason to panic or move him now.</div></div>
I agree that panic selling is a bad idea, but I don't think his play has anything to do with concussion symptoms. He's always been a sloppy puck handler and shown limited effort. He has good bursts, like the effort he put into the goal against MTL, but otherwise he loses a board battle and pouts for a second before slowly getting going again. He just doesn't have any killer instinct aside from when it's time to shoot the puck, and he even seems to be missing his confidence in that regard right now too.

Laine
Wow this is tempting, but I think Provorov is too valuable to this team right now and it just wouldn't make sense to trade him after just acquiring him and him being one of our best players.
If there was something that could be worked out around Necas and some picks for Laine, that would be a very enticing offer.

Sign Lindholm like Severson
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>cbjthrowaway</b></div><div>cannot understate how much i love marchenko's game and personality. that said, those guys aren't great comps.
hughes was 20 when he signed his deal. sanderson had just turned 21. tage was coming off of a 38-30–68 season when he signed his extension.
marchenko is 23 (much closer to being a finished product) and has a career 28-10–38 line across 80 games, which is buoyed by his 16% sh% last year. he's both less proven and more of a finished product than those three guys.
the better comp is oliver bjorkstrand's first extension with the jackets, signed in the summer of 2018 (3 years, $2.5m aav) as a 23-year-old coming off of a 40-point season. that's in line with marchenko's age and production so far. bjorkstrand's second cbj extension ($5.4m aav over 6 years) is probably the high-end comp, but he signed that after scoring at a far higher rate than marchenko has, and that one bought out 4 UFA years (i think).</div></div>
I get that maybe the projection is high based on the current numbers. A lot will depend on how he finishes this season, but I value him highly and project him to be worth it. It's also 8 years, which I get is a strong committment, but it's also buying like 6 UFA years so it's going to raise the price a little bit.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jpsnow13</b></div><div>Replace Savard? He is still under contract for a year and a half. Even if they traded him away right now:
Barron, Kovacevic and Lindstrom are NHL level.
Ghule, Harris and Xhekaj can also play the right side.
Reinbacher will sign before the end of the season.
And Mailloux is waiting in the AHL to be recalled.
With 9 realistic options on RHD, why would a rebuilding team pay a high pick? Zero interest from MTL.</div></div>
Seems like a fair enough assessment. I don't watch enough MTL games to know, so was going off of numerous users here that seemed to have interest in him.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bast</b></div><div>Why would the Flames let Lindholm walk to UFA. He's going to be traded at the deadline, or signed long term(less likely)</div></div>
Fair point. I guess if he is traded at the deadline and is a UFA next season, CBJ would only be able to offer him 7 years.

He's a $4-5 million winger right now, but seeing how he plays and the mentality he brings, I see him being an $8+ million winger in 4-5 years. Personally, I'd take the gamble to lock him up long term. Good teams do this and it keeps their championship window open longer, like how Boston did with Marchand and Pasternak, or countless other examples.
They should also have the money in 2 years to sign Fantilli, Jiricek and Johnson to good value 7-year extensions as well.

Yes, that is what this is intended to be, similar to the Severson deal as stated in the explanation. So you are correct, this would technically be a sign and trade.

Maybe this isn't the move, but I'm not that enamored with Sillinger in the middle. Numbers aside, just watching him play, he always looks reactionary. To my eye, he doesn't have the ability to anticipate or think the game spatially. Maybe that will come, but I'm annoyed that he's been in the NHL for 2+ years when I feel he should have been in Cleveland this whole time. I did think he looked better on the wing early in the season when they tried him there.

And if you're planning on playing him on your top pair, you're setting yourself up for another disappointing first round exit.
