Davidsons Deadlne Deals
Jackets should hold on to Provorov. He still has another year and is a decent dman. No sense in trading him, making the defense worse and setting the rebuild back. Wait until next year when he is an expiring contract. If the Jackets are too far out of it they can trade him then with only 1 year of 50% for a higher return. I think he's much more likely to bring a 1st at next year's deadline.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaseyFlyman</b></div><div>I feel like we've talked about this before, but I just don't see Peeke as an asset at all. He should be waived, sent to Cleveland, or claimed by someone looking to take a wild chance. Provorov just doesn't seem like a fit, he's a little overrated offensively yet underrated defensively, but is likely a TDL 2025 move where Mateychuck can replace him at 2LD.
I'd love a Toffoli signing for the 3RW, and I thinkn the top-6 forwards should be Johnny, KJ, Marchenko, and Chinakhov (plus Fantilli and either Sillinger or Voronkov) long-term. Giving Laine a fresh start somewhere else feels like a good offseason move.</div></div>
Yeah, Peeke is bad, we agree on that. The issue is he isn't going to be traded or signed off waivers with that contract, and our cheap ownership isn't going to pay him almost $3m to play in Cleveland. He's good at blocking shots, he's always healthy, he puts out a good effort every chance he gets, he's just mentally slow and shouldn't be getting a bunch of minutes or opportunities to flub the puck to the other team. If he was making 800k he'd be a great 7th dman. It's unfortunate that his salary is $2m more than what he's worth, but they have the cap to pay him now rather than buy him out and have 4 years of dead money on the payroll.
I like Provy's game. He does make too many mistakes, but he's still a pretty decent 3-4 dman. I think the right coach could make a difference for him and a lot of other guys too. For me it all depends on how the team is playing next year. If they're doing well, you hang on to him (if you can sign him to a reasonable deal), if the team is struggling, he is an obvious trade piece to sell at the deadline.

Drafts are, idk...kind of a crap shoot. Lest we forget <a href="https://thehockeywriters.com/2016-nhl-entry-draft-top-10-where-are-they-now/" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">the Dubois draft</a> and subsequent dragging he got. The expansion draft hurt, but I'd be curious for someone to point out to me where in 2017 any draftniks foresaw Karlsson going from a 25-point 3C/4C to scoring 43 goals on a team <a href="https://thehockeynews.com/news/thn-s-2017-18-season-preview-vegas-golden-knights1" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">absolutely everyone agreed was going to make it to the Finals,</a> led by top-line center Vadim Shipachyov. Maybe we find out one day that Jason Robertson was Jarmo's #1 choice the subsequent draft, but it just as easily and reasonably could have been Klim Koston. We still ended up with Tex, which aint nothing of a consolation prize.
He inherited a bad team in 2013 that <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013%E2%80%9314_Columbus_Blue_Jackets_season" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">quickly overperformed,</a> and put a damper on any true rebuild hopes. <a href="https://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/06/chicago-blackhawks-trade-brandon-saad-to-columbus-blue-jackets" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">He was aggressive</a> to improve that team, and it quickly fell on its face before Torts came in and turned things around for a few years.
I'll give you credit on the Bjorkstrand trade. I still feel there could have been a way to make it work.
He wasn't bad. Wasn't great either, but it was time.</div></div>

I'm not sure about Roslovic, if he wants to stay there at a lower cost he might be worth resigning but I haven't seen enough to say if he's worth keeping.
Whoever takes over needs to bring some vets in at forward, even just some good defensively bottom sixers would help, too much youth in the lineup at the same time.
And probably most importantly, send Vincent back to the AHL and hire a real NHL coach ffs!</div></div>
Really they just need to replace Laine with a veteran power forward. I'd love if they could trade him for a pick this summer and sign a guy like Toffoli to a 1-year deal to play the 3rd line. Boone should be on the wing as well, then this team is much heavier on the forecheck and has plenty of veteran leadership in Boone, JG, Werenski, Kuraly, Gudbranson, Provorov, Danforth, and even some of their young guys are getting old enough to start becoming leaders.
Definitely agree that the biggest thing is a legit NHL coach. Pascal is a good guy like Lars, but also like Lars, just doesn't have a personality to inspire. They need a coach with some fire and charisma that can coach the team's mentality more effectively, rather than just where they stand on the ice while being skated around.

They will be gone in time. At least one of them will get moved this summer, but I think with their money and term they aren't going anywhere at the deadline. Bean being an RFA gives teams flexibility to use him as a rental or re-sign him if he fits well.

This could be a yes from Columbus. Yes, it is a massive overpay if you look at value in a vacuum, but Jenner has an inflated value to a contender because of what he brings in tandem with his extremely team friendly deal. This is about what it would take for any team to realistically acquire him.

I tend to agree, I just don't think the demand is there and CBJ will have no leverage to deal him for any kind of decent return. Jenner on the other hand, I absolutely want to retire a Jacket, but he does have a high demand and CBJ have all the leverage, so he'd likely return more than his value in a vacuum - which people here don't seem to understand.

Give me the lineup card
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaseyFlyman</b></div><div>Lots to unpack here:
"Fans are emotional with short memories, but Jarmo has been a good GM. He was the first and only GM to build a winning and competitive team in Columbus, which I believe is always going to be an extremely hard thing to do in a city that doesn't have a great hockey culture and is not the most desirable place to play."
He's the first GM in team history to build a <em>respectable</em> team, I'd hardly call 1 playoff series win a winning team, and a career 409-360-97 with a 0.528 points percentage is...technically competitive? 7 winning seasons in 12 isn't stellar, but it's not bad. He's certainly been the best GM in team history, but that doesn't mean he's the right GM for the team now. He arguably bought hard when the team wasn't fully ready in 2019, and his moves since can be directly attributed to some of the team's biggest flaws (Provorov, Peeke, Elvis contract, Severson contract, Gudbranson, even back to the Wild Bill expansion draft loss, etc.).
"When he tore the team down to rebuild, he built up a top-3 prospect pool in the league within three years. I'm not sure what else you want from a GM. The losing has been tough, but he's done exactly what he should. It sucks that he and JD got fooled by Babcock, but going for a proven, experienced coach was still the right idea. Next year should be their last chance. If they aren't playing around .500 with a shot at the playoffs, then you fire Jarmo mid-season and bring in a new guy."
Any GM in the league can build a top-3 prospect pool in the league when you just make the picks that fall into your lap and have 5 top-15 picks and 3 top-6 picks in 3 years. I'll give him credit for scouting, drafting, and getting quality back in trades where he's the seller. He gets no credit from me on his poor management of young players, RFA contract negotiations, evaluation of NHL talent, UFA signings, trades where he's buying on NHL players, or critically hiring coaching staff.
Jarmo and JD are responsible for the only playoff-winning team in history, and are also directly responsible for being one of if not the worst run franchise in the sport right now. If this many significant players are having both performance issues and management complaints, it's on management.
There were a half-dozen better coaching hires this offseason, and 3 years ago when they hired Larsen, and years earlier when they hired Torts. They're set on getting guys with a very specific coaching style that just has mediocre results at best and catastrophic results at worst. He and JD have created a culture of failure, mediocrity, and dysfunction, and we have to strip it down now before it continues to fester. If we'd seen any progress this year, maybe you argue they deserve a shot next year. But we haven't, it's the same arguments this year as last year, it's time for them to go.
Completely aside from all on-ice issues, it's time for a massive culture change. IMO, fire Jarmo, fire JD, trade Boone, and go from there. PV I don't mind keeping through next season as a "prove you weren't the issue" deal, but something is rotten to the core here.</div></div>
It's also important to understand the context of the playoff losses and how difficult it actually is to advance in the postseason. Those were competitive teams and played some very good series' against the eventual Cup champs.
In 2019 he had to buy hard because he knew he was going to be losing his star player.
It's also pretty reductionist and unfair to say he "just made the picks that fell in his lap". He acquired picks with savvy moves and made smart decisions by all accounts with those selections. Go back and look at the Howson and Maclean drafts and tell me how just making the pick worked out. Just having a top pick is no guarantee. There is still time for things to play out, but it appears he has selected some very good players.
The coaching hire thing is debatable. Larsen was very obviously a sacrificial hire during the rebuild. With Babcock they got fooled, no way around it, but I absolutely agree with the track they were on to find an experienced and hard-nosed coach. I don't think Laviolette wanted the job. I would have loved Roy, but maybe he wasn't interested in Columbus either. I'm not sure there were that many, if any, better options than Babcock for this team, but it's really hard to judge with our 10,000 ft. view. JD and Jarmo have been in the game a long time and are extremely well-respected. That doesn't just happen by chance. I have to believe they did their due-diligence and just got fooled by Babcock. It sucks, they have to own that, but it's doesn't mean they're totally inept.
Look, I'm not trying to say they absolutely need to stay. I don't think a changeup would be a terrible idea at this point, but I think we need to take a step back and acknowledge that they've done well here and are going through a planned rebuild. I'm sure they thought they would be better this year, but a deeper look at a lot of stats shows that they might not really be that far off. Maybe it's time to cut bait, but they aren't idiots, and they don't suck at their job like so many CBJ fans like to spout. Also, who is brought in as replacement is a total unknown, and I trust Priest a hell of a lot less than JD or Jarmo.

His performance has been down since the cup run. HIs last three years are .901, .894, .907, and he's been a volatile personality which can make GMs willing to move on. Both guys are in a similar situation where they have dropped off a bit and can be a little erratic. It's fine if you don't want the deal, but it is a pretty fair value and certainly not out of the realm of possibility.
The deal also sends STL a right-shot dman who is still only 23 and possesses a rare offensive skillset while shedding over $2m in cap space.

Dach and Macceli both have higher upside and production than Sillinger. He's a middle-6 two-way center. He might have a couple 20-goal seasons in his career but he's never going to be an offensive dynamo. Like I said, maybe he garners a little more based on how he finishes the season, but we're talking about a difference of maybe half a mil AAV.
I don't disagree on Kent, but he has a much higher upside as a potential top-line player and the org might be willing to bet a little more on his future. I also think there is a much better chance that he gets hot before the end of the year and helps his case quite a bit in a summer negotiation.

IDEAL Summer

The Bean and Bemstrom deals feel about right. I’d also like to see CBJ say “**** it” and just put Peeke on waivers. I’m beyond tired of him - let him kick ass in CLE or let someone else have him for free.
It still feels like a Campbell-for-Merzlikens one for one is destiny at this point, and considering Campbell’s actually salary will be less than Elvis’, I think CBJ should be motivated to give it a shot. Frankly, what do you have to lose at this point?
The Marchy deals feels about right, but I think Chinny, KJ, and Cole are all bridge-deal guys. KJ probably gets more, as well.</div></div>
Maybe Laine brings back a first, but that's a big number and he's been so inconsistent. Jarmo has worked crazier magic before, but I was just trying to be a little more conservative given all Laine's drawbacks.
Peeke is absolutely bad and overpaid, but I don't think there is an alternative. No one is going to trade for him or claim him, the team will not want to pay him almost $3m to play in Cleveland, and he still has 3 years left so a buyout would suck as well. I think he spends one more year as a 7th dman for this team before being bought out.
With Merzlikins resurgence this year, he is nowhere near on the level of Campbell as far as bad contracts go. He and Binnington are in pretty similar situations. Good, yet sometimes volatile tendys, who could use a fresh start.

Give me the lineup card
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dopplsan</b></div><div>Yes yes and yes to this lineup. I’m sick and tired of the blender, here.
I still try and give PV somewhat of a mulligan. He got dealt a **** hand with no time to put things together, and he’s doing all of this on the fly. Not to say a summer of prep and a month of training camp would mean we’d be a different team entirely, but the start of the season was obviously kneecap’d, and he’s been stuck playing it by ear and trying to stand up ever since. Not really getting time to choose his staff didn’t help either.
I give Jarmo so much credit for what he’s done, but it’s starting to feel like some big change needs to happen in the front office. Call it “vibes,” but I think just having a new face and voice in management could be a good refresh. The inconsistencies with player development have felt, well, consistent for a long time. And the <a href="https://theathletic.com/5231542/2024/01/28/blue-jackets-david-jiricek-ahl/?source=user_shared_article" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">concerning things coming from Jiricek</a> aren’t making things feel better.
I have faith in JD, and I give some leash to PV. But to be a GM in this league for over a decade and have relatively little to show for it (even if he is, almost by default, the most successful GM this team has ever had), part of it feels like spinning wheels.
I don’t think the fan base is quite “light cars on fire and protest” level of angry like they were in 2012, but things feel on the decline.</div></div>
To your point on giving PV slack, yes, he was thrust into the HC role on short notice, but it's not like he was picked up off the street. He had been here for two years prior and had all summer to prep with Babcock before taking over. I think he is mishandling the lineup and the minute allocation because he's afraid. I understand wanting to protect young players and take it slow out of concern for overwhelming them and ruining their confidence, but in this case, Fantilli, Jiricek and Johnson are supremely confident guys who have repeatedly bounced back from various struggles already. I also think making decisions out of fear is always going to wind up being wrong in the long run. The team has a good mix of veterans to support them through tough games (Boone, Johnny, Kuraly, Gudbranson, Werenski, Severson, Provorov). I think they need to play at least a little more than they are, and Fantilli shouldn't be moved to the wing just to accommodate playing Boone in the middle. He's great at faceoffs, but there seems to be too much priority given to that and not enough thought about the long-term plan. Like everything in life, you get better with reps.
With regards to Jarmo. I agree, the results he's achieved shouldn't be the standard, but at the same time, with all things considered I think he's still done a pretty good job. Columbus is probably one of the 3-4 hardest places in the NHL to build a winner. I still am not totally against replacing him. Sometimes a fresh perspective can work wonders and maybe his approach has just grown stale, but I do think fans are too hard on him and too easily dismiss or forget all the good decisions he has made over the last 10 years. A lot of fan takes just come across as ignorant and they act as if he's only been here for the last 3 years and the team has always sucked.

If you want Jenner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JaredOfLondon</b></div><div>Its funny how much people think a guy who is a 3c in a contender is worth</div></div>
It's funny how people can't look at actual trades that have occurred in the NHL and understand how teams value guys like Boone Jenner.

Larsson Jenner Year 2
If you want Jenner, you need to be prepared to make and offer that will make the entire hockey world ridicule you and think you're insane, similar to the Jeannot trade to TBL. No way CBJ even come close to considering this.

CBJ Leafs
The CBJ trade is pitiful. The last thing they need is more prospects and middling players. If they deal Jenner it would be for a stupid massive haul, and Provorov will probably bring back a 1st+ at the deadline next year on his own.
Not to mention, to "clear cap" you're dealing the two best veteran contracts on the team, but neither have significant enough term to justify signing Lindholm long-term. If that was the logic they would be dealing Laine, Gudbranson, Severson or Merzlikins.
