I see your point where Pitts values Defensemen more than Centers ATM.</div></div>
The math doesn't work for the Pens keeping Brassard, so it definitely won't work keeping Duchene. They're both on expiring contracts, so their performance beyond June 2019 doesn't matter too much for this trade.

Also, Maatta is terrible. He is one of those players who benefited from playing on a stack Pitts team. As soon as Maatta leaves pitts and joins a team like Ottawa, his play would get exposed.
From an Ottawa perspective, <em>"Pass hard"</em></div></div>
The last four seasons Duchene had 222 points to Brassards 203. Duchene had 44 points on the power play, Brass had 53. Whatever your feelings about Maatta are, and mine are decidedly mixed, Duchene won't bring a whole lot more than Brassard at the cost of what's been a Top 4 defenseman for the Pens. This trade would cost the Pens another d-man they can't afford to lose just to be a little bit better at a position they're already deep at, and for that alone its unrealistic.

Pens pass hard. Duchene isn't enough of an upgrade over Brass to give up Maatta, and Pitt doesn't need Anderson.

Saad isn't bringing back Brassard and two 2nd rounders, not without some added value and a lot of salary retention at least. His value is just about as low as it could be right now, and Chicago shouldn't trade a guy like Saad at the bottom of the market.

This is Honka's 3rd year with a realistic shot at a roster spot and playing time in the NHL. He only stuck now because of waivers, and if he can't consistently crack the lineup in his Draft+4 season over a guy like Polak then he's probably never going to. Klingberg and Carrick look to have the Top 4 locked up, so Honka isn't going to have much opportunity going forward anyway.

Will Pens make a trade
The Pens have used a consistent 4-man PK so far this season, and the drop off from 4th in ice time to 5th is massive. Sheahan, Rust, and Cullen are already pulling down more than 2 minutes a night on the PK, so unless the Pens get a Hagelin-level penalty killer back (which Copp is not) they need to fill his minutes by commitee with guys better suited to other roles.
The guy that makes sense for the Pens to target on Winnipeg is Lowry, but he's functionally their #2 center right now so he's a non-starter.

Why? He's in reclamation territory and can't lock down a roster spot over Roman Polak. He shouldn't bring back much more than guys like Oleksiak and Pouliot did.

I feel like just a 4th rounder straight up should cut it for a RHD that hadn't cracked the NHL until waivers kicked in at 25 and might end up on the wire at some point this season. He's got less going for him than Oleksiak did when he was traded.
It's also worth mentioning that while he's nowhere near untouchable, Angello has looked pretty good in Wilkes-Barre. I wouldn't send him off to plug a short-term hole in the lineup, even a months-long one like this.

Couple Moves
Honka has pretty much worn out his welcome in Dallas, so it wouldn't take some expensive package or a useful roster player to get him. Bennett's getting to the point where his value should come more from his on-ice results than his draft position, and his on-ice production hasn't been worth anything close to Sprong and a 2nd round pick especially given his cap hit.

Maatta to Devils makes sense - Pens part
Quenneville hasn't been statistically dominant in the AHL, and I've personally seen enough of him to say that he's no surefire NHL talent. He won't work as the principal player in a trade for a Top-4 defenseman.

I have to say as a Pens fan I'm getting kind of PO at the team constantly short changing fans to appease people. They did this same bs with Sheary giving him way too much money to please Sullivan. Now they cough up a horrible contract for JJ. I don't care two craps if he's friends with Crosby. Suppose to be a professional team, not a bunch of friends. When you don't take the game seriously why should the fans.</div></div>
Where are you getting this about Sullivan and Sheary from? Sheary was coming off a 53-point regular season in just 61 games. It wasn't and isn't a bad deal and I have no idea where Sullivan comes in, unless this is more nonsense about his niece.
Riikola's preseason success is nowhere enough evidence to say that we can start trading away Top-6 defensemen. If the team keeps playing like they did opening week he'll get his looks, but the call for trades are reactionary and shallow.

Richie isn't terribly better than Grant (if at all) and he's three times more expensive. Why trade for him in the first place, let alone add a pick? It can't be just because he's a bit younger.

1 transaction to round out the team
quote=Hamburglar44;597799]Oh, I pay attention. How many times must you see him getting blown by or making piss poor decisions with the puck when under pressure to realize he's not as good as you think? And for 4mil per year, it makes it worse. Maybe his salary is my focal point bc I expect more for that price. Imo he's a 3mil player and yes that 1mil makes a difference in a cap restricted league. That list of defensemen isn't a good comparison bc a lot of them are offensively minded and a few are straight trash and/or are on awful teams.
You don't classify Maatta as an elite defenseman yet you lumped into a group of defenseman where around half are to try n prove a point. Then say he won't get pushed out for a warm body (Duchesne isn't a warm body). Apparently you didn't the trade. All you Yinzers are ridiculous with the hometown views on players. Every single Pittsburgher adores all their players no matter how good or bad they are. You guys probably all have a Craig Adams bobblehead on your mantels. Maatta is the second coming of Rob Scuderi. Fyi, I don't think Hagelin, Johnson or Oleksiak are worth their contracts either so bring all the hate ya want, It'll be more of a proving point.[/quote]
I didn't lump him in and say, "See!?! He has better shots than Karlsson therefore he's better than Karlsson!!!" There are differences in system, strength of team, and talent that account for a lot of the disparity, so if you wanna take the shallowest glance at what people are trying to say and turn it into, "lol yinzer dumb" then go ahead. Maatta is a solid 2nd pairing defenseman that given his contract, age, and on ice production is worth a UFA like Duchene almost by himself, but you throw in the entire top of a draft along with him. Then you turn around and imply, "oh you better not wait or he'll only get what Pouliot got" when Pouliot couldn't crack the roster and Maatta is an established five-year NHL vet at 24. Your valuation on Maatta as a player and a trade chip is terrible.
Also I've never lived in or around Pittsburgh, so there goes your yinzer argument.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>awesome</b></div><div>if he realized that he probably wouldn't have suggested the trade. But that would take him actually paying attention.</div></div>
Right? I'm not trying to say Maatta is an elite defensemen or that he's not a bit pricy for what he brings, but everyone is so fixated on the one bad year in five he's had, plus the bad moves that stick out for all defensemen if you're staring. He's averaged 0.34 points per game over his career minus the atrocious 2016 season, and here's a list of players he beat in shot attempts at 5v5 over the last three years: Shattenkirk, Schmidt, Karlsson, Trouba, Kelfbom, Hamhuis, Cole, Schultz, Brodie, Ekblad, Suter, Carlson, Vlasic, Provorov, Vatanen, Dumba, Brodin, Barrie, and McDonagh. Now almost all of those guys have a heavier workload and tougher assignments, but that doesn't change the fact that Maatta has a top 50 SAT differential the last few seasons (including his garbage year). He's a good defenseman who isn't a perfect fit but is still valuable to the team and system.

The pre-season games he's in been in so far this year see him get blown by from guys that aren't even NHL regulars. Like I said previously, his best days are behind him. He has had numerous seasons to work on his foot speed. He's nothing special and he's overpaid. His advanced statistics make his D-partner worse and if Gonchar hasn't fixed him by now, it's never gonna happen. All of you who think he's worth keeping are gonna wish you traded him while he's worth something instead of waiting around like they did with Derrick Pouliot.</div></div>
You do know that he's coming off a season where he played all 82 games and tied his career high in points, right? He's not gonna get pushed out the back door for a mid-round pick and a warm body.

Maatta's no world beater but trading him and a bevy of picks for a rental is foolish, especially when it's not known if Johnson, Oleksiak, or Riikola can competently lock down the 2LD spot Olli filled last season. If he's made expendable at some point, well then he's expendable, but until he's shown to be redundant there's no point trying to shuffle him off for no long term help in return.

Guentzel's extention- next offseason
Guentzel still has 3 RFA years left, and the Pens have a mountain of cap space opening up around the time the Pens would need to pay him a UFA rate. A bridge deal for 3-4 years between $4.5 and $5 million is well within reason, unless he goes off with a crazy 70+ point season. Right now I'd peg his next deal at 4 years, $4.8 million a year.

Is a long-term Pacioretty signing possible?
Have you bothered looking at what Johnson's buyout is after the first year? It's over a million every season from 2020-2027, and in 2022-23 its over two million. Buying out Johnson's contract is idiotic, not least because he'll still have value and even if he isn't what Rutherford is looking for he'll be easy to trade to more than a few bad GM's.

Pacioretty now. Two deals at TDL.
I don't see what Plekanec brings that Sheahan doesnt. His defensive skills might still be there but the production has fallen off a cliff. He's at the point where you're basically giving up Dea and a 2nd to shuffle centers and add Jordie Benn.
And the odds of a non-compliance buyout being used on Johnson are zero: it would be a million dollar cap hit almost every year from now until 2027. The term is wonky but his cap hit isn't nearly as bad as it's been made out to be, and he's coming into a role that he can work in. Johnson's going to be fine.
