Okay let me counter a ton of your points.

1) Ovechkin is basically 35 (9/17 is his birthday) he shouldn’t be their best player and that should be addressed. That being said 50g/ year ppg player top 10 in hits. What else can you really ask for from a 35 year old winger? Not to sound like a A hole but no crap his game has regressed but heavily? I tad bit dramatic. I think swapping Ovechkin and Vrana ice time would help this team a lot.

2) Kuzy fell off a cliff? He’s still a 65-70 points center at worst. That’s still great for a 2c center. You ever think that maybe it was the coaching/system? Look at him w Trotz vs him w TR. I’ll go along with this off the wall statement caps right now could get King’s ransom for him but why waste this current window? Imo new coach will get the most out of him. 70-80 point center 2 years ago who basically carried this team on his back to a cup seems a little premature to trade him. Not to mention if he really really falls off a cliff move him to wing and play mcmichael. So many better options.

Backy? What part of his game makes you think he’s going to be a terrible contract a few years from now. For the last 13 years he’s average 70-80 points and that number hasn’t changed or shown signs of changing? Just wondering why he randomly sucks? I’d understand if he was struggling but that’s not the case at all. Seems like a “hater” thing to say.

Oshie... basically the same as Bäckström... last 6 years averages 50 points and did the same thing this year. By the time his contract is bad the caps will need to suck to rebuild. That or Seattle takes him to be the face of the franchise. Again “hater” comment with 0 evidence backing it up

ORLOV doesn’t need to get better caps have Fehervary and Alexeyev. He’s still really good and of the caps can trade him now I would. Trade hiM for Domi and I would be happy. IMO Domi at 3c or 2c with Kuzy as a winger.

Holtby lost his job (they took his job lol) Sammy looked great and should be wonderful.

Vrana is elite if he ever gets ice time

Wilson is a fukcing beauty. I wish every player had Wilson heart. Maybe he could finish a little better but dude is a player and I love him. I’ll die before I say a bad thing about him fair warning.

D is complicated but Seig is a great defensive D man hopefully he can play top 4 as good as he did 3rd. Fehervary looked really really good limited time. Should only get better. Should add Vat or a great RHD vet.

Last thing CARLSON. Get him a really defensive mind partner and he’s good. His defensive game could use some help but a new coach can help that. His career year was a 89 point pace. Idgaf if he matches that but he’s a 75 point dman. He’s elite and I wouldn’t trade him.

You are harsh ...somethings are true but this teams
window isnt closed yet. Very soon but they need to get a little quicker on D and they’ll be fine. They have some good young talent they drafted.

My suggestion

Trade ORLOV for Domi.
Sign Vatanen
Sign Dillion or if you can trust Kempny(I don’t)
Trade kempny get some value for him

Dillion Carlson
Seig Vat
Feh Jensen

Vrana Kuzy Wilson
Ovi Bäckström Domi
(3lw) Eller oshie
Hags Boyd Hathaway

Sammy / vets backup

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kylonetic8</b></div><div>yes, I'd be just fine with that if he shows the skills and ability. Why not? Everyone is new until they're not. If we save cap in goal and spend it on what we really need, better skaters with more sound D, I'm good with that. Vanecek can't be any worse than Holtby the last couple of years, sub .900% 3+ gaa.

And what "didn't stick" exactly? I simply said he has a ton of pro experience, which is true. The KHL is a pro league with men playing pro hockey.</div></div>

Yeah first point agree to disagree I guess. I wouldn't be comfortable having a rookie stepping in to lead the games for a big chunk of the season, but maybe improved defense and change of coaching would change my view.

Second point - KHL is vastly different than NHL. So yes, Sammy has experience in the KHL, but that doesn't mean the experience transfers over to the NHL...It may be a pro hockey league, but these players in the KHL are not as good as the NHL players. Take Jaskin for example. On the Caps, he played 37 games and had 2 goals, 6 assists = 8 points. The year before on the Blues - 76 games with 11 points. Then he goes to the KHL and is the second most in points this past season with 63 (31 goals and 32 assists). The quality of play is not the same. So yes, Sammy has experience, but it doesn't necessarily meet NHL experience. And BTW Vanacek has zero NHL experience. But he does have AHL experience, which is a professional league where men play pro hockey so that is a bonus!

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kylonetic8</b></div><div>He didn't get hurt for the playoffs, he got hurt riding 4 wheelers over the long covid hiatus.

Connolly only scored 15 goals, 23 points his first year in Wash. Sprong can surely duplicate that, as he's already hit 14 before.</div></div>

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ClockReads2113</b></div><div>Guaranteed Sprong scores 20+ goals his first year. He scored 14 with ANA in 49 games while averaged 3rd-4th line minutes. People keep sleeping on this kid and he's going to show up big. Loved him since his draft year.

Goalies are voodoo. You don't need vets like other positions. Sammy-Vanecek will be the new Varly-Nuevirth.</div></div>

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kylonetic8</b></div><div>
Personally, I think the duo would be fine, Sammy has tons of pro experience in the KHL and is no longer a rookie. Vanecek has been improving and looks to be ready to try his hand at the NHL level, if one of them goes to the dumpster, there's always Copley as an emergency.</div></div>

1) Yes...he got hurt. Doesn't matter where or how, but he got hurt. So you would rely on Vanecek to lead the Caps through the playoffs if that happened again (especially with the closing cup window?) Spend the $2-$2.5M on a veteran goalie to take the pressure off of Sammy and have a strong tandem
2) I hope your "guarantee" comes true as a Caps fan. I just highly doubt he scores 20+ goals next year...but would absolutely love to be proven wrong here
3) KHL and NHL are a much different game so your point about a "ton of KHL experience" really doesn't stick. With the Caps closing window (and the horrid defense that hopefully improves), do you really want to rely on a rookie to "try his hand" in the NHL as the second part of the tandem?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Capitalfail67</b></div><div>I'd say his Defensive stats would make him a top 4 shutdown guy on most NHL teams.. Capitals will guarantee have him playing top 4 next year.. look at his number vs Nurse defensive numbers and get back to me... also offensive stats do little in a conversation about a SHUTDOWN defenseman lol. Nurse would be the 3rd best Dman in Washington so bc he's 1st on Oilers doesn't mean much. I'd say Nurse is a solid 2nd pairing Dman... again the return is pretty solid. Hags adds depth to a team that showed obvious defensive flaws. Nurse is paid a lot of money and has little term imo for how good he actually is... just my opinion on the matter</div></div>

The conversation isn't ABOUT a shutdown defenseman; it's a conversation about the over/undervaluing of the players on each side. As such, offensive stats are 100% warranted- especially when I didn't use Seig's lack of offense to disparage him. But, if you insist on me strictly using Sieg's defensive numbers:

While playing the 3rd pairing minutes where he was relatively-sheltered from the opposition's best (~25% of his TOI against top competition as per PuckIQ), he fared quite well in GA/60, SCA/60, HDCA/60 and FA/60. The only stat he particularly struggled in was CA/60 which implies that his pairing was lacking somewhat in getting the puck out with control, but he made up for it by covering the front of the net and slot quite well.

However, as I alluded to before, all these things are ALSO true of Matt Benning and I'm not revving up to toss him into the top-4. The fact is, when playing relatively-sheltered minutes, any Dman with a future in the league SHOULD be performing very well in some facet of the game. Could he be a top-4 shutdown Dman in the near future? Absolutely. Has he proven to be one so far? No. Should be valued as though he is? Also no. He's worth something and certainly more than Benning, but not enough to justify trading Nurse for him (and a couple air fresheners).

Since you said yourself that Nurse is overpaid and has too short of term for how good he is and you're convinced Sieg is a top-4 shutdown D, I'd say you're better off keeping your guy and we're better off keeping ours- especially given the cap situation the above roster is in :p
