Cap Choices

It is true we cannot predict what he will be 3-4 years from now. I also cannot comment on the evolution of Andrew MacDonald after he signed for 56 years @ 5M. The way I look at it is the Flyers need a #2 Center and the Leafs have one under contract for 3 more years at a reduced rate of 4.5M with history of scoring 30 goals for two years in a row and the style of play that the Flyers are know for. To trade this asset for Laughton is a significant upgrade for the Flyers and suits exactly what they need. It is true there is an extra 4 year commitment to Zaitsev, what would that cost in Prospects! I am not convinced he is a significant drop to Gudas but that can be debated.</div></div>
Sorry, 6 years

The only way y’all are getting rid of him is if you send him to a team heavily amidst a rebuild with a pick and a decent prospect. Today’s NHL is all about cap management, and contracts like Zaitsevs really hurt whatever team it’s on</div></div>

Thats a fair trade.
If i’m the leafs i add a piece or two to see if I could replace Gudas with Myers.</div></div>
That is a great option but best forward offer would be Bracco, not sure that is enough, no point including either Liljegren or Sandin until we know what we have in them

Does this mean you think the trade is fair value wise as Gudas> Zaitsev and Kadri> Laughton? Does it also mean you think the Leaf's must add to pay for 4 extra years on Zaitsev's contract?

How can the Leafs stay cap compliant without trading zaitsev
Don’t agree with your thinking that trading Kadri is stupid, think his great contract with three years remaining means the return should be in line with what you are selling! If I had to pick between a 29 year old Kadri who plays behind two studs and can be replaced by Nylander and a 22 year old Nylander the choice for me would easily be to keep Nylander. Kadri is a opportunistic and aggressive player who has scored 30 goals two years in a row, he may do that again but not as the third line center for the leafs, he is a luxury and I believe needs to go either now or later when we need cap space. That does not take away from his value or the great return you would demand

Time to find out what we have in D
Thanks for reply, agree about Kadri but I think that may be an advantage. Kadri is not a puck carrier but he has scored 30+ goals two years in a row. These two wingers, with their speed, will flush out the puck and give him quality chances

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rangerfan01</b></div><div>I looked up gardiner's stats. 83 giveaways for a defenseman 62 games in is pretty awful. To take that plus a 4 million cap for another year isn't great. Leafs have to add something to sweeten the deal. Rangers already have enough turnover machines on defense.
I think a deal not involving Gardiner would interest rangers, however. Depends what comes back though, and what Lamoriello is willing to part ways with. Liljegren and Marner immediately come up and Rangers would want one of them. And I highly doubt either of them are going anywhere.
In short, a trade between this teams likely won't work.</div></div>
Think you have to look at the three quality prospects instead of Gardiner

Why Borgman and Bracco and a 1st?</div></div>
I breakdown the leafs into groups: they now have 8 quality forwards I would not trade, 4 quality men, including Dermott and Liljegren, and Anderson. The prospects I offered would not affect this and still leave Johnson, Grundstrom and Rasanen! Again, think you have to give to get

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Liamthepro</b></div><div>Not from the Leafs perspective I wouldn't say. At present they have this big, long window in which to contend. Maybe 8-12 years after this one. But McDonagh is signed for one more year (as is Gardiner).
After that next year, you are out Bracco and Borgman and your late 1st from the year before.
Also, now McDonagh makes just a bit more than Jake, but if you want to re-sign him will cost much more.
Also, McDonagh shoots Left and plays LD, and you have traded away two very capable LD to get him, but done nothing about the ugly situation at RD.</div></div>
That is my first reaction but sometimes I think you have to give quality to get quality

Truth is Doug I have no problem trading Gardiner as I do not rate him as high as you obviously do, the larger question is to compare three quality prospects to two rounds of playoffs with a legitimate number 1 defenseman</div></div>

Any trade that includes one of the big three with 1st round picks has to wait until the summer when it can be a sign and trade to assure Karlsson is here for more than 1 1/2 years

Price: Not sure what you mean, JVR is there because Toronto has to make room for Kapanen to play so one of JVR or Bozak could be traded, Washington is already set at center so JVR seems a better fit, yes the Leafs are giving prospects, I suppose a later draft pick could be added if that closes the deal, they could also add lower level prospects such as Lindberg and/or Valiev but then Washington will have to worry about the 50 contracts. I understand your point about quality for quality but Washington is in this spot and Toronto can solve it. This deal does not work for Toronto if they must give up prospects who have not shown their true worth yet, ie Dermott, Neilsen, Bracco, Brooks, etc. This deal is not crucial for Toronto, they can just wait for which of the 5-6 quality defence prospects will improve and join the three they already have, this is just an opportunity that exists that they might capitalize on

Biilius: I agree but I think that is what is great about the deal, if you don't overpay it can be a one year rental of Carlson for a one year rental of JVR with the cost of three RFAs with upside. The deal is even better if Carlson becomes indispensable and replaces Gardiner, that means we get two years of them before Gardiner moves on as the kids get better and take his place. I think you had the right idea

To palhal: Yes I have retained salary but that is to allow Washington to hold on to it's CAP money to further add to their team because they are trading the better player. Yes I moved two 5/6 defencemen but that is required to help Washington solve their problem. Toronto has the five prospects of which any could make the jump, especially Dermott or Rosen, they also have Valiev that may be ready. We are not creating a significant hole, we are improving the Top Four defence at minimal cost, you may be right that Marchenko is not ready but that remains to be seen

To Price_is_the_goat: those additions defeat the point of the deal, Bracco is a valuable prospect for the future when the likes of Kadri, Brown and Hyman become too expensive to keep as part of the core, that would create a hole while filling another, the sign and trade would be up to Washington as their future Cap situation may not allow them to afford JVR

Hi, wondering if you read the description
Cost of signing Matthews approx. 8M above current, Marner approx 5M above current, Gardiner Approx 1.5 above current, Total 15M max
Savings from: Kadri 4.5M, Martin 2.5M, Horton LTIR 5.3M, Extra 5 players shown at approx. 0.8M each, Total 16M
Kapanen, not being one of the core pieces would have a two year bridge contract only in 2019

Leaf fan to Habs fans
It is possible that I mis- understand the status of Plekanec and Deharnais, I view both of them as non- factor players and a drain on the Habs cap situation, if this is not the case then the proposed trade was wrong. The thought was in upgrading both those players for 1 1/2 years while Price is in his prime years.
