Description
Leaf's CAP situation comes down to choices. For me I choose Nylander, Kapanen and Johnsson over Kadri's contract. Nylander is at a reduced value now because of his performance last year, he needs time to prove his worth or not. Kapanen has lots on his side: Youth, Speed and PK. Johnsson also has lots on his side: Youth, tenacious and PP. Kadri will never be a second line center with the Leafs and therefore will not reach the 30 goal plateau here again, I think he will age poorly here as he plays aggressively and is not a large body. The value of his contract versus his return as a second line center elsewhere is what makes him the choice to go. Of course this may be fluid and change if either Kapanen or Johnsson hold out for significant raises above the 3M level!
Overall I see an acceptance that Gardiner and Brown must go. The next choice is Kadri versus Zaitsev, while many are down on Zaitsev I see him as doing what the coaching staff wants, become defensive and work on the PK versus where he started at that earned him this contract. I too see the contract as slightly too high and way too long but that is done now. The option I see is instead of trading one and weakening that position trade both and seek a return that downgrades only slightly the two positions. I am hoping for comments on the value of the Philly trade, do the Leafs have to add for Zaitsev's contract, ie Bracco or another prospect. Regarding the FA signings I did not worry about a specific amount to each player, instead I figure the average of signing the 5 players should come close to 19-20M. Hoping some savings here or the CAP increasing to 83.5M will handle this small deficit. Cheers all, great time to speculate!

Your explanation is very good Zaitsev is amazing on the PK and I think he is underperforming, he could do better.
Thats a fair trade.
If i’m the leafs i add a piece or two to see if I could replace Gudas with Myers.

Gudas is better than Zaitsev by a pretty huge margin. When Gudas is on the ice, the other team gets significantly fewer shots through compared to when he's off the ice. It's the opposite for Zaitsev. Gudas is also better at clearing the net to allow his goalie to get good looks at shots that do get through.

The biggest issue with Gudas's game is that he's in the box, and therefore not on the ice, too often.

If Gudas didn't have that caveman reputation, he'd get way more credit as being one of the best defensive Dmen in the league.

Does this mean you think the trade is fair value wise as Gudas> Zaitsev and Kadri> Laughton? Does it also mean you think the Leaf's must add to pay for 4 extra years on Zaitsev's contract?

That is a great option but best forward offer would be Bracco, not sure that is enough, no point including either Liljegren or Sandin until we know what we have in them

But that's the sweetner to convince Philly to take on Zaitsev

As someone else here mentioned, Gudas is a better player than Zaitsev, and there’s no way Philly would take on Zaitsevs contract (we learned our lesson HARD with Andrew MacDonald). The only way y’all are getting rid of him is if you send him to a team heavily amidst a rebuild with a pick and a decent prospect. Today’s NHL is all about cap management, and contracts like Zaitsevs really hurt whatever team it’s on

The breakdown of what is left is 5 years @ 4.5M, the truth is I would be happy to keep Zaitsev if the Leafs did not have to shed about 5M of CAP space, it appears he is on the first pairing of the Russian team at this time. It is true we cannot predict what he will be 3-4 years from now. I also cannot comment on the evolution of Andrew MacDonald after he signed for 56 years @ 5M. The way I look at it is the Flyers need a #2 Center and the Leafs have one under contract for 3 more years at a reduced rate of 4.5M with history of scoring 30 goals for two years in a row and the style of play that the Flyers are know for. To trade this asset for Laughton is a significant upgrade for the Flyers and suits exactly what they need. It is true there is an extra 4 year commitment to Zaitsev, what would that cost in Prospects! I am not convinced he is a significant drop to Gudas but that can be debated.
