Seems like a good match

Team: 2017-18 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 10, 2017

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This was suggested by BILLUS before but included Kapanen thus defeating the possible rental part of the deal.
Washington has only 17 players signed and they have only 4m cap available, they also are at only 43 contracts. Toronto is at 49 contracts and has NHL ready players and no room for all of them.
Yes it is a quality for quantity deal but that is the situation Washington is in and its get no better next year when they would have to resign Carlson, this way they get a quality winger that they can instantly help their offense and three RFAs all with upside.
Toronto trades players that are not part of their core for someone who could be, they will continue their trend of going for it in 2017-18 while allowing Carlson and Gardiner to compete with each other for which one should be kept for the future, they are the same age and have the same attributes, the bonus is having both of them for at least one season while the five quality prospects sort out with the Marlies which are most ready to help starting in 2018-19. For the Leafs this seems like a no-brainer as their other problem is holding on to the likes of Leivo and Rychel while avoiding a waver claim. The key part to this deal for the leafs is to not give up any of their core players or prospects, this makes it acceptable if they find they can only afford Carlson for one year. Of course the ball is in Washington's court as they are giving up one of their quality defenceman and getting back two with upside

I think if you guys add Bracco, and do a sign and trade for jvr (idk whats his current contract situation) at a affordable cap hit, and add a young d man, maybe Dermott, then this deal could work. add a 2nd or 3rd pick as well. seems fair

So you've retained salary and the Leafs have little cap and short two roster spots. JVR and bit more for Carlsson might be good, but you have also traded the Leafs 5/6 Dmen to fill one defence spot and now Marchenko plays full time. Leafs have actually no proven 7th or 8th Dmen in the system. IMO made more holes than the one filled.
And it kinda of a day dream that the Leafs will resign Carlsson at a reasonable price. The Leaf want to sign their top three forward in two year, and maybe their isn't money for Carlson and Gardiner. And your odds of signing a UFA is just 3% anyway.

To Price_is_the_goat: those additions defeat the point of the deal, Bracco is a valuable prospect for the future when the likes of Kadri, Brown and Hyman become too expensive to keep as part of the core, that would create a hole while filling another, the sign and trade would be up to Washington as their future Cap situation may not allow them to afford JVR

To palhal: Yes I have retained salary but that is to allow Washington to hold on to it's CAP money to further add to their team because they are trading the better player. Yes I moved two 5/6 defencemen but that is required to help Washington solve their problem. Toronto has the five prospects of which any could make the jump, especially Dermott or Rosen, they also have Valiev that may be ready. We are not creating a significant hole, we are improving the Top Four defence at minimal cost, you may be right that Marchenko is not ready but that remains to be seen

I'm thinking now my inclusion of Kapanen made my initial proposal an overpay, so this may be closer to something that works for both sides.
The big question for me is whether both teams can manage signing the pending UFA player coming their way. I know it's tough to keep Jake under this scenario...

Just keep this simple fact in mind. To receive quality, you have to trade away quality. if u want a top 4 d man, then be ready to give away some of ur top prospects.

Biilius: I agree but I think that is what is great about the deal, if you don't overpay it can be a one year rental of Carlson for a one year rental of JVR with the cost of three RFAs with upside. The deal is even better if Carlson becomes indispensable and replaces Gardiner, that means we get two years of them before Gardiner moves on as the kids get better and take his place. I think you had the right idea

Price: That may be but then Washington has to find a way to get from 17 players to 22 players with 4M in Cap space

Price: Not sure what you mean, JVR is there because Toronto has to make room for Kapanen to play so one of JVR or Bozak could be traded, Washington is already set at center so JVR seems a better fit, yes the Leafs are giving prospects, I suppose a later draft pick could be added if that closes the deal, they could also add lower level prospects such as Lindberg and/or Valiev but then Washington will have to worry about the 50 contracts. I understand your point about quality for quality but Washington is in this spot and Toronto can solve it. This deal does not work for Toronto if they must give up prospects who have not shown their true worth yet, ie Dermott, Neilsen, Bracco, Brooks, etc. This deal is not crucial for Toronto, they can just wait for which of the 5-6 quality defence prospects will improve and join the three they already have, this is just an opportunity that exists that they might capitalize on

Leaffan57. I still think it's a massive overpayment for one year of Carlsson. And now have only 1,2m in cap space with only a roster of 21
And really is Carlsson that special, to give up three regulars. He's good on PP but the Leafs had the second rated PP in the league last year.
