The better the team is the more support they inevitably get from FANS. This marketing you're speaking of, is it towards the fans? Interesting. TV deals and adverts? Who watches those? Hmm, is it maybe the fans? Did you know the NHL is a gate revenue driven league? Meaning if people didn't actually show up to the games the league would be in serious trouble. Again very reliant on fans. And yes of course money is more important to them, it is a business after all. But who brings them the money? Maybe, fans?
You know, you gave me a good idea though. I'm gonna video my next beer league game, post it to Youtube and gather all that juicy ad revenue. Eventually probably sign a TV deal and really start rolling it in..</div></div>
Believe it or not, I've done this before and gotten paid for it (minus the TV deal and ad revenue). The playlists are unlisted (only viewable by the link) though

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LuckyMoneyPuck</b></div><div>if you actually new anything about the NHL you'd know what a beer league it was in 1963.
Bobby Orr was making 50k a year by the end of the 60s. Players not as good as him far less. The average salary was around 10k. for an average citizen.
That would be like McDavid earning 250k
Lets not pretend it wasn't a beer league. It got organized to make money.
Your post would have more credibility if it had any actual point to make.</div></div>
1. I’m not going to claim I know everything about the NHL, but most evidence points to the NHL not being as much of a beer league as you claim. There are many trophies named after NHL employees of that era and before that, several HHOF inductees, and lots of members of the NHL’s 100 Greatest Players list in 2017.
2. You’re forgetting about the costs of inflation. 10k today is nowhere near what it was in 1963, it wouldn’t even be close to 10k in the 70s when the dollar was taken off the gold standard.
3. If your definition of a beer league is “organized to make money”, that makes the vast majority of all organizations, especially in sports, “beer leagues”.

Even when the fan base hasn't been there, and the league was damn near a beer league, they still had a draft.
So no everything isn't done for the fans. But they sure got you in marketing to get you to think that.
Fact is they careless about the fans and more about TV deals and advertisement money than they ever will the fans. It's why they bend over backwards to appease those crowds in ways they will never for the fan base.
Let me tell you a little something I learned from growing up in Cleveland watching the browns move out of town..... F the over attachment to a team. They don't give a $#!t about the fans. You just haven't figured it out yet. Money is way more important than the fans. They aren't in this business for fans, they are in it to get paid.
So don't blame the kid for doing what he thinks is in HIS best interest. Believe me, every time an NHL team leaves a city, they don't give a crap about the fan base. Go ask AZ fans.</div></div>
1. The NHL has existed since 1917, while the NHL Draft has only existed since 1963.
2. Your point would have so much more credibility if you didn’t have 1400 posts in just 2 months

If “Hockey Is For Everyone” is truly the goal as you claim, I would agree with you. Multiple guys (and teams) respectfully declined to participate in “Pride Night”, and by letting them get lambasted by the media, Bettman and Co in NHL HQ proved that they did not want hockey to be for everyone

Quebec and area has a small population and not a great amount of businesses. I question if the a Quebec could constantly draw 14,000 paying fans at current NHL ticket prices. Hamilton? When the NHL expanded, and Ottawa and Tampa were accepted, Hamilton had the chance to enter. But there was NO owner for the Hamilton franchise. Hard to have a franchise when no one was willing to put 100m (or whatever it was) to be an NHL owner.
Too many of the awarded franchises, have been to owners who have based their ownership on a house of cards real estate, arena,. Lots of so called NHL owners, haven't had much interest in the NHL team but were trying to get their money from the other means surrounding the arena. I really don't see all the love for Salt Lake City. The population greater SSC is 500,000 and the population Utah is 3.3m. Sure they have an arena, but do they have revenue to substain an NHL franchise, year after year?</div></div>
Admittedly, I don't have as much experience as you do. However, "Don Cherry's Hockey Greats & More" says otherwise. He goes through the whole situation of what happened in the '92 expansion on pages 59 and 60, and I would go into more detail here but I'm not sure how much I can share without violating copyright. In addition, didn't Jim Balsille make a bunch of different attempts to bring an NHL team to Hamilton?

It requires patience and vetting potential owners properly as opposed to what Bettman and company have done.
There's not just expansion failures. This commissioner can't even get inclusivity right which BTW would help bring in more revenue but hey, let's alienate groups of people based on how business has been conducted in the past.
A big eff you to that Arizona franchise.</div></div>
By alienating groups of people, are you referring to Canadian hockey fans? I know a team in Hamilton or Quebec City would bring in a lot more revenue than Arizona and maybe other existing teams. As for "inclusivity", it depends on what you mean. If you're referring to the "Pride Nights", remember that they were a disaster last season and Provorov jerseys sold out after he stood up against it.

I see all the talk of Arizona moving to Salt Lake City, which I think is a good one, but I had a similar idea that might work better.
Relocate the Coyotes to Quebec City or Hamilton
Create 2 new expansion teams in the West (1 would go to Salt Lake City)
Return to the 1v8 playoff format
Could have a schedule where you play 48 intra-conference (3 per team) and 34 inter-conference (2 per team) for 82 total
The reason it's relocation to Quebec City/Hamilton and expansion to 2 other cities is that Bettman could get the US cities to pay higher expansion fees than Quebec City/Hamilton
I understand this is not as easy of a solution as just moving the Coyotes to Salt Lake City, but would this work, and if not, why?

Since other comments have already addressed that Marner is superior to Boeser, not to mention the fact that the Leafs wouldn't trade Marner, fantasy hockey drafts support this as well. Fantasy hockey drafts are relevant in this case because they represent the perceived value of NHL players by many hockey fans and perceptions are the majority, if not the entirety, of reality. I am in two fantasy hockey leagues, one with 10 teams, the other with 18. Marner went 25th and 8th overall respectively, Boeser went undrafted in both.

The current owner is obviously out, so if there is no new owner for the franchise it will cease. I think the questions should come up about whether or not an ownership group for an ECHL can be found in time to save the pro hockey for the community.
From the reporting Seth Cooper has done, it sounds like the other ECHL owners are not really excited to save the location due to the travel costs.</div></div>
Thanks for the info. Apparently, the owner sold 3R to become league-owned and they will search for a new owner. I'm not sure why 3R got that option, but NL was terminated despite the 2 teams being in the same situation. I can understand wanting to mitigate travel costs, but I'd be surprised if the travel costs outweigh the additional revenue for having the only pro sports team in NL, and a successful one at that.

I agree. The ECHL could not have done anything else wrong. First of all, I would have assumed that the ECHL would have had rules in place to prevent the same organization from owning multiple franchises and a Conflict of Interest. We saw that the NHL forced Andlauer to sell his stake in the Habs before taking ownership of the Sens. Second, it should have been 3Rivers that ceased operations because they were the ones that owned money. The Growlers should not have been a casualty of 3Rivers mismanagement.
Third, the Growlers had been around for longer and actually had success winning Division titles, a conference title, and a Kelly Cup, while 3R just started a few years ago and has struggled to make the playoffs.

Panthers are 2-7-1 in their last 10. Almost looks like they realized that if they won the division, they would get home ice so they’re trying to tank to get road ice advantage, even if the Leafs are a stronger matchup than a wild card team.
