Small Pre-Season Moves
If we're giving up a 1st for Peeke, the trade should be similar to what we offered for McCabe.
Needs to be mid round picks coming back maybe 2 4ths or 2 5ths.
A 7th doesn't do any justice.
On top of that a serviceable 3rd/4th line player.
But if I were TOR, I'd trade a 1st for a veteran top 4 defensive defenseman like (i.e Tanev, DeMelo)

Chicago declines. You're using a 2nd to dump Joseph's contract. Cancel that out.
That's basically Brannstrom, 1st, 4th for Murphy and Raddysh. Not enough.

Bad for both teams.
Arizona is in the midst of a rebuild. They value their picks highly. Jarnkrok and Brodie will not help their rebuild one bit.
Toronto is in dire need of defensive defenseman and you offload their best one.
On top of that acquiring picks and a top 6 player they don't need.
The Leafs can't afford $5M of Zucker to play on the 3rd line, that's poor cap and asset management.
Bertuzzi - Matthews - Nylander
Domi - Tavares - Marner

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JeffGorton</b></div><div>why tf would the Habs do this?

What exactly has Harris done to prove he's been better than Hague in the 75 career games he's played?
They're both 3rd line LD but Hague plays both 2nd line PP and PK. Harris isn't a factor on special teams.
Hague has a ring and contributed to Vegas's championship run.
Harris is younger but Hague has definitely contributed more so far.

Think this helps all teams
In the CBJ trade, Boqvist and Liljegren kinda cancel each other out. I wouldn't do Jenner and Peeke for Nylander.
Not sure how trading for a pending UFA in Nylander would help a rebuilding team anyway.
NSH has a huge logjam at RD, they really don't need Timmins. (Barrie, Schenn, Carrier, Fabbro)

This lineup is DISGUSTING
Dumoulin is a 3rd pairing defenseman at this point in his career.
No team would give up a 1st, and certainly not the Leafs.
Take out the 3rd, 4th going to TOR and the 1st going to SEA. Switch it with a 3rd going to SEA.
If I'm giving up a 1st for a defenseman, I'd want Larsson or Tanev.

Standing Predictions
Florida is not missing playoffs. They'll miss Ekblad and Montour to start but they're not out long enough to compromise their whole season.
Plus their team got a lot better in the offseason.
I can see Buffalo finishing over Boston, it'll be a dogfight in the Atlantic.

That 4th line is not getting it done. A good 4th line helps maintain pace and momentum over the course of the game and that's why most teams have veterans floating around there.
3rd line is still too green compared to other contending teams in the east like FLA, CAR, NJ, TBL, and maybe even TOR.
But defense is starting to take shape, goaltending is upgraded, and the young core takes another step forward. Playoffs are on the horizon.
Ceiling this coming season, I can see a 2023 NJD finish for them.

24-25 seriously thinking about playoffs spot
Hutson and Reinbacher have insane potential but at the moment, they are too green to make a contending-like impact on a team just like that.
They're not on the caliber of Makar and Fox where they'll just level up exponentially after one season. They need time to grow into their roles.
Slafkovsky and Newhook are still young and unproven. Both have great potential and have moments of flair during the season.
But to put them together on the 2nd line full time and expect consistent results? They'll get eaten alive by other contending teams.
And I would not give Montembeault a $4M+ AAV contract when he has yet to produce a season where he is under 3.00GAA.
In 2024-25: most of the Atlantic Division will still be better than MTL. And that's just one division let alone the rest of the east.
I wouldn't expect consistent success in MTL until at least 2027.

Spitballing the Future Roster
The last thing the Leafs need is Seth Jones.
We already have capable offensive defensemen in Rielly, Klingberg, and Timmins.
Acquiring Seth Jones is diminishing returns with poor cap/asset management.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SomeonesOffended</b></div><div>Value is there but I don’t like the main piece coming back being a defender</div></div>
In the short-term, it's Pesce. In the long-term, the main piece is Jarvis.
Jarvis is only 21 he's only going to get better and he's played well in the playoffs in a substantial role already.
Plus he's an RFA, so he'd be under team control for a while.

I don't mind the 2nd leafs trade. But we wouldn't have that cap to take on Pesce at that point.
That's why Liljegren is important to us at the moment.

how far
Top 6 F is A+, Top 4 D is solid. The rest of the depth at forward and defense are lackluster.
A.Nylander and Cizikas aren't offensively skilled enough to carry that 3rd line.
I don't feel confident in that Staal-Hamonic 3rd pairing. Both are old and they're gonna be extremely over-reliant on that top 4.
They'll probably finish 2nd/3rd round.

Makar is literally the best defenseman in the league. Bro is almost 25, he hasn't even hit his prime yet.
He's got a ring, the Norris, and Conn Smythe.
I love Makar, but that man is untouchable as it gets.

Where do they finish
Some of the best defensive-defenseman in the game and defensive forwards in Buchnevich, Cirelli, and Danault.
Plus, with Sorokin, he can rack up a lot of shutouts. I can see lot of 2-0, 3-1, 3-2 wins with this team.
PK will be top of the league.
The biggest issue is PP. It will be quite dreadful because all the defenseman are "stay at home defensive defenseman"
No one really has the offensive repertoire to move the puck skillfully.
The best offensive defenseman in this group is probably Brett Pesce who I don't think has scored more than 30pts in a season.
So for that, this team's ceiling is probably the 2nd round.

Best top 6 teams
Florida's top 6 clears NYR.
Barkov and Tkachuk is easily better than Zibanejad and Panarin.
Barkov is a Selke winning centre. Tkachuk literally finished with back-to-back 100pt+ seasons.
Reinhart > Kakko and Bennett > Chytil (slightly)
Verhaeghe and Trocheck are kinda equal.
Verhaeghe - Barkov - Reinhart
Rodrigues - Bennett - M.Tkachuk
