The year they finally start contending
I approve of everything. Trading Neal with retention makes sense. Some people want to dump Neal, some people want to buy him out. Trading him with $2m retained meets in the middle. I also think we might need to trade for the right fit in the top 6, Buchnevich would be great if Holland managed to add him

interesting idea
imo Tatar and Nuge get less. Lot's of factors involved in the flat cap. Guys like Nuge and Tatar want term over money considering their ages. I suppose the overpay makes sense given the term. Nuge gets a 2-year deal at $6.95mill now and it ends when he's 30. That's a huge gamble for the player, they have no clue what their market value will be at 30. I'd be surprised if Nuge takes money over term. 5 year deal at a surprisingly low AAV seems realistic to me, around $6m
Terry would be a solid add

That's kinda what I figure happens. IMO trade him next TDL and make a huge upgrade with that cap space, Holland somewhat eluded to a scenario like this in his press conference today. The team that receives him can buy him out that summer and pay a penalty of $1.9mill for 2 seasons, or hold him for 1 more year at $5.75. It probably only takes a 2nd + a long shot prospect at most to convince someone to hold that bag when you consider what Florida gave up to ditch Connolly. Much better than $1.9mill in cap penalties till 2025 if we buy him out this summer

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Zmach</b></div><div>I don’t know how that works. If he doesn’t get his 11 million dollars by retiring he’s not retiring regardless of how bad he is. Either burying him a year or a 3yr buyout isn’t bad.</div></div>
imo the buyout option is awful I'd sooner hold onto him and move him in a TDL deal next year, or in his final year. I agree though he definitely doesn't go anywhere unless he gets his money. I'm not sure how it works either. I figure it's possible to quietly get placed on LTIR when you physically can't keep up with pro hockey, obviously not a likely scenario but I think it's a real possibility (also considering the impact covid had on him, which is speculated by people on Twitter, not sure what to believe)

I kinda hope Neal retires on LTIR (never want to see a guys career end but it's best for the team)
I would gladly ship him off with a 1st though if he plays next year

Help me fill out the roster - 9M cap space
imo Bouch should take Barrie's spot. I think it comes down to one of either Bear or Barrie, and I'm fairly certain Holland would opt to go with Bear. Bouch would be $4.6mill cheaper than Barrie. Is Barrie really $4.6mill better than Bouch?
Swap Bouch for Barrie and you have nearly $14m+ in cap space instead of $9m

imo we should pair Kulikov with Larsson. Bouch or Jones with Bear. Kulikov and Larsson will be able to handle the difficult defensive zone starts. Bear should be paired with a guy that can move the puck

Nations Capital One Stop Shop
I would hate to lose Puljujarvi, and I assume it would be a huge hit to morale in the dressing room. One of the best defensive forwards in the game this season. I would 100% do a 1st, B prospect and even a 2nd/3rd to get rid of Neal though. Tierney trade seems a bit unrealistic, imo you're probably underrating Lavoie. Dzingel/Gudbranson trade is interesting, I think Dzingel is really the only one of the 2 that would be of much use though.

Oilers 2021-2022 Not actual Cap Hell
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheGreatBigMac</b></div><div>Yes things are easing up but with this lineup Oil still need money to resign Nurse, Bear, and Jesse in 2022, which will be at least $4M more. The only cap relief is a Neal Buyout.</div></div>
A Neal buyout isn't exactly "cap relief". Oilers would have $4.2mill in cap penalties till 2023, and an extra $1.91mill in penalties till 2025 with a Neal buyout added to our current buyout and retention penalties. Only 1 playoff team this year has more than our hypothetical $4.2mill in penalties, Montreal with $4.3mill in penalties, which becomes only $1.9mill next year. I think it's absolutely ridiculous to add another $2mill to our current penalties with a Neal buyout. Teams don't succeed with $4.2mill in penalties. We'll continue to have an awful bottom 6, and get nowhere. I would much rather hold onto Neal and unload him in a TDL move in his 2nd last, or final year to make the money work, it would cost extra picks but is entirely worth it. We're supposed to be winning cups with McDavid and Drai, not get anchored down by more cap penalties

I'd like to bring in a bottom 6 guy at the TDL, we obviously need an upgrade there. If Laughton fits well we can extend him. Makes sense, and minimizes the risk of another Turris experiment

If you buy him out you pay him 1.916 million for 4 years which equals 7.666 million. by Trading him you save 1.916 million thats it. So you are going to trade Benson and a 1st to save 1.916 Million?</div></div>
I am arguing we save $5.75mill against the cap by trading Neal's entire contract. Compared to a buyout ($1.916mill), we save 3.834mill extra
This post is arguing that we trade Neal with $2.875mill retained, saving us $2.875mill. Compared to a buyout ($1.916mill), that saves us 959k extra against the cap
Trading Neal with retention doesn't even save us $1mill. If the argument is that it saves ownership some money, then yea, it probably does

$2mill/year in penalties till 2025 isn't manageable. Thats the window we should be winning cups in with McD and Drai in there primes. We can't afford more buyouts. I'd much, much rather give up a 1st+ to dump Neal

If Holland changes his mind
IMO we should save our trading assets and make a big splash next deadline. Move out one of Neal, Kassian or Koskinen at the deadline to clear cap space and add a huge piece. We could honestly be favourites next year if Holland plays the offseason right, I think we should stay put this season. I wouldn't mind acquiring Derek Ryan for a 4th though, he provides an extremely useful tool and making a TDL move shows the team Holland has faith
