Just to continue, the sample size is small (only 16 minutes, mainly due to Larkin getting injured), but here are the Vrana/Larkin/Zadina numbers:
16:05 2.0 JAKUB VRANA - DYLAN LARKIN - FILIP ZADINA 0 1 -1 7 3 70.0 16 6 72.7 - 16 shots for vs 6 against
And if you need a little more evidence that Zadina may be the key, here are the numbers with Fabbri/Larkin/Zadina:
61:07 7.4 ROBBY FABBRI - DYLAN LARKIN - FILIP ZADINA 1 3 -2 36 36 50.0 60 61 49.6 (60 shots for vs 61 shots against)
I know those numbers aren't as good, but they were one of the better on the team that had a reasonable amount of minutes played (obviously the team isn't that good overall).

I don't expect a career year per se, but Vrana has the speed to match Larkin, and the ability to draw attention, which should free up Larkin. Last year, pre-Vrana, everyone's eyes were on Larkin, and teams didn't have to fear anyone else on that line (even Mantha).
Also, Larkin hasn't had a playmaker like Zadina since Zetterberg. I expect a breakout year from Zadina for sure, because he'll be the 3rd wheel, plus the chemistry of another Czech on the line (plus, just general ice time increase).

I might be crazy, but best season of his career... I think he and Vrana are really going to feed off of one another with a full season together.

Time will tell if it was smart. We do know that both Smith and Keith come off the books at the end of 2022/23, the cap will have increased, and Broberg, Samorukov, Niemelainen, Hollowy, Lavoie, and maybe Maksimov will be ready for full time duty as well.

Quite likely we can't resign Bear or Kassian gets unloaded somehow. Too much money tied up with Saad imo I can't see Holland cutting it so close
edit: Overall i think this would be a top 5 team as long as we get good goaltending. Great lineup</div></div>
For sake of argument let's assume Benson, Jones, and the 2022 2nd are used to acquire Strome at the 2022 deadline. The Oilers get to at minimum the WCF, god forbid they do the thing. Strome doesn't extend.
2022 expiring cap: Archibald, dead cap, Koskinen, Kulikov, and Sbisa ($10M). Raises to Bear, Puljujarvi, McLeod, and Nurse total to a maximum of $7M. Broberg (ELC), Holloway (ELC), and Samorukov ($850k) join the roster. It's important to note that CapFriendly hasn't calculated Broberg's slide properly: his ELC 'begins' in the 2021-22 season so we don't need to worry about extending him yet. Winner of Konovalov vs. Skinner is the backup. The Oilers will be right up against the cap next year and may have to run a 22-man roster and some bonus overages may carry over into 2023.
The Oilers lose $2.25M in dead cap the following season and I think the club walks away from Klefbom unless he takes a steep discount. Broberg and Samorukov will be given the reigns to the bottom-two pairs and I think Bouchard can be bridged similarly to how Nurse was (approx. $3.2M). Broberg will have less of a claim to anything over $2M. Khaira's replaced by a cheap, PK specialist for less than $1M. It's manageable but tight for the next two years.
Trading Kassian at 50% retained with a small kicker for virtually nothing probably becomes a necessity somewhere down the road.

Uh... that isn't going to happen in a million years. Puljujarvi at $1.2M is FAR too valuable to be a throw-in on a cap dump. This is RIDICULOUSLY good for Detroit.
Clearly it wasn't put together by an Oilers fan.

I can not stand Keumper trades to EDM.. he isn't enough if an upgrade on Koskinen to justify giving a first for him. Since Koskinen first 12 games played straight in 24 days has gone up into the .925 range... Keumper is at a .908 right now.. and he's injury prone. He is not the answer for EDM in net and certainly not at that price...
I like the signings and I can see the vision trading Nurse for Nylander just a tough pill to swallow losing Nurse.

Next Year
Seattle bandwagon fans will tell you that it ain't enough to take on Neal's contract, so I always add in Jones, as he is a expendable defenceman, we already have Broberg and Samorukov who will be just as good or way better than Jones will ever be IMO, I just hope that our defense will be better next season and Connor and Leon finally hoist hockey's greatest achievement (lord stanley)

You literally began in this thread with "I heard an insider say".
Leafs can't afford to pay him anything above $4.5M. It's not really about previous contracts, comparables around the league, etc.
If he's wearing a Leaf on his chest next year, he's not going to get market value.
Now, the kicker in the Leafs offer, is they may be willing (or have to) go longer term then most teams.

We the long term effects being so unknown I don’t think you’re right. Hoss got out of it for a rash, Klefbom is cleared to play but it hurts him too much. Clearance is not the only factor.

And if we get lucky and Seattle takes Kassian then we will have a little over 29M to spend. Hopefully Holland can pull some magic and get a couple players for discounts like he did with Barrie this year. I have a few that I would like him to go after but so does every other fan!! Lol

Lots of space
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>McDavidFan97</b></div><div>That's kinda what I figure happens. IMO trade him next TDL and make a huge upgrade with that cap space, Holland somewhat eluded to a scenario like this in his press conference today. The team that receives him can buy him out that summer and pay a penalty of $1.9mill for 2 seasons, or hold him for 1 more year at $5.75. It probably only takes a 2nd + a long shot prospect at most to convince someone to hold that bag when you consider what Florida gave up to ditch Connolly. Much better than $1.9mill in cap penalties till 2025 if we buy him out this summer</div></div>
yup a team like sea might take him if we add atleast a first but Oilers are still in a good cap situation in the off season, dumping neal would just sweeten the pot

1. Separate Draisaitl and McDavid.
2. Play Benson-McLeod or Holloway-McLeod on a soft-minutes line with Kassian.
3. Let Barrie walk and play Bouchard dammit
4. Use the remaining money to buy big on Grubauer and a proper #1LW. I like Buchnevich and wonder if the Rangers would part with him.

Blueline Pairings with Kulikov
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Nhl_oilers</b></div><div>And your saying you know more than Tippett? Jones isn’t even that good, as we all saw for how much he has played. I don’t mean to sound rude but talk about favouritism.
Nurse
Barrie
Larsson
Kulikov
Bouchard
Russell/Lagesson
Bear
Jones
Jones and Bear aren’t even top 5 on the oilers for the defence! They have a lot to work on to make it that high.</div></div>
1. Barrie isn't a defenceman, he's a forward. We can't play him with anyone besides Nurse because he actively bleeds chances against.
2. Bear is the only defenceman Edmonton's had in its past 10 game stretch with an xGF above 50%. He's been phenomenal since recovering from his concussion.
3. If you don't subscribe to analytics and insist on the eye-test, you aren't watching the games then. Jones and Bear have been super-effective defenders for Edmonton in the past dozen games, save for the Calgary and Habs blowouts where nobody looked good.
4. I find it exceedingly curious that two of our non-white defenders on the roster are considered to be the 'worst' defenders on this team by yourself and a growing sect of the fanbase. Take it as you will, but both Russell and Lagesson are effectively useless at both ends of the ice. I'd find your opinion reasonable if you didn't think two of our defenders that can actually transition the puck are our absolute worst pieces on the back end. 3rd worst? 4th worst? I can accommodate that provided you have the means to back it up.
Now, I want to be very clear about point #4: I don't think this is your personal view. There has been a noticeable uptick in media witch hunts against Jones and Bear, and I think it stems directly from within the organization. We were sold last year on Nurse not being what he was cut out to be, and we're seeing it regarding Bear and Jones now. Souray was ran out of town under similar circumstances, some internal conflict within the Oilers office. I cannot for the life of me recall periods of time where other defenders have been scrutinized like this. Russell has never been criticized by this organization. Larsson, despite his frequent lapses in ability, has never been criticized to this extent. Barrie's inability to defend is never mentioned. It's not a stretch to recognize that there are some pretty extreme views in this province, especially among the older generations, which almost exclusively makes up the Oilers office.
Make an exaggerated effort over the next half-dozen games to really focus in on Jones and Bear. What you hear from the Sun or even the Journal doesn't align with what they're doing on the ice.
