2021-2022 Opening Night

Created by: TMarch
Team: 2021-22 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 25, 2021

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Don't think Raymond or Berggren make the team straight away, Berggren would be the 1st callup, Raymond the 2nd. I think they try to sneak Pearson through waivers, and Smith will rotate in (I don't think he'll make it through waivers).

Seider makes the team in the top 4. No PP to start (Leddy will soak up primary PP time), but definitely, PK time to start.

From a line perspective, I think the Czech's start with Larkin, and the Guelph line is the 2nd line (chemistry should be easy since they played together before). Stick Namestnikov with the kids, to give them some structure, along with another player that can play C.

For the other special teams, I don't think Vrana starts on the PP1, mainly because his game is predicated on speed, which isn't something you can do on the PP.

All bets are off at the TDL.

Wings fans, what do you expect from Larkin this year?

I might be crazy, but best season of his career... I think he and Vrana are really going to feed off of one another with a full season together.

So you have Dekeyser in the 1st pair with Hronek because you want Leddy with Seider?

Sorry, you are right. I read the chart wrong. He still has another year. Smith needs waivers though.

Yes. At least to start. I don't think you throw Seider right against NHL top lines right away. I also think that Hronek and Leddy's games are too similar to play on the same line together, and I think that Hronek will lead the team in ice time again. Sum it up, DDK/Hronek, with Leddy and Seider.

I don't expect a career year per se, but Vrana has the speed to match Larkin, and the ability to draw attention, which should free up Larkin. Last year, pre-Vrana, everyone's eyes were on Larkin, and teams didn't have to fear anyone else on that line (even Mantha).

Also, Larkin hasn't had a playmaker like Zadina since Zetterberg. I expect a breakout year from Zadina for sure, because he'll be the 3rd wheel, plus the chemistry of another Czech on the line (plus, just general ice time increase).

Just to continue, the sample size is small (only 16 minutes, mainly due to Larkin getting injured), but here are the Vrana/Larkin/Zadina numbers:

16:05 2.0 JAKUB VRANA - DYLAN LARKIN - FILIP ZADINA 0 1 -1 7 3 70.0 16 6 72.7 - 16 shots for vs 6 against

And if you need a little more evidence that Zadina may be the key, here are the numbers with Fabbri/Larkin/Zadina:

61:07 7.4 ROBBY FABBRI - DYLAN LARKIN - FILIP ZADINA 1 3 -2 36 36 50.0 60 61 49.6 (60 shots for vs 61 shots against)

I know those numbers aren't as good, but they were one of the better on the team that had a reasonable amount of minutes played (obviously the team isn't that good overall).
