Moving Palat But Keeping Him In Tri-State Area
I think Palat’s value to locker room, and in eyes of front office, gets underlooked often. He is a very popular player. There is little reason to think Fitzy would entertain moving him.
Vegas could get more for Hague. He may get healthy scratched from time-to-time in that lineup, but is probably every night 3LD on a lot of playoff teams.
I think Siegenthaler is part of the core. I do not think we’d move him for a role guy. He had a injury-filled blah season, but has otherwise been solid. And with Sevo gone, he is by far our best dman against the rush.
Would be a sturdy lineup though

How has Määttä been? We could use another veteran dman, whether he plays at 3LD or as 7th dman probably depends on how Bahl looks. The $3m cap hit would probably be the obstacle.

If you meant Nolan Foote, the forward, I think NJD would entertain that move. He is a big body, with big shot, but turns like the titanic.

The 2024 is known (73% chance it is 10th, 18% it’s 11th, 0% chance of being later than 15th).
Barabosha just signed a three-year extension in KHL. He is a thumper as RD, but won’t get here until 2027. Hurtig is a big body RD, but plays more skilled game, but was bounced off Michigan State blueline by Maxim Strbak. His value is pretty low right now.

I think if obvious names are off the board…some of the heavier forwards would be targets. In this scenario, we traded all the way back to #27 and selected Dean Letourneau. But I could see MBN, Chernyshov or Greentree be possibilities too…and would make sense if we just jumped from 10 to 16 as some will be available at Blues pick.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Turner33</b></div><div>In this post they used the blues 1st in another trade. So they basically traded back to add assets, to use in trades to bolster the nhl roster. Which does make a lot of sense for a team in their position</div></div>
Devils have lots of holes to fill, but for the most part, our core is set with Hughes, Hischier, Bratt, Meier, Mercer up front…Dougie, Hughes, Nemec, Siegenthaler on blueline.
We need a couple bottom-six types, maybe a 3C (depending on where we play Haula & Mercer), another veteran LD, and a goalie. I don’t think we need a 10th overall pick to plug all those holes.
I was trying to come up with a scenario whereby we trade down multiple times and either add pieces or add mid round picks.
As for draft…it is probably ‘best player available’ for us if we pick that high. But our needs in pipeline are defensive dmen who can handle puck…and two-way centers. So if Dickinson falls, I would guess we probably select him.

Zadorov $5m x 5 is tough one to swallow. I would say $3.75m x 3 or $4m x 2
And if we are adding picks to Holtz for Markstrom, we are likely getting retention there.
Between those two, ought to be another $3m+ to spend on another player.

The Devils and Flames got deep into Markstrom talks during the season. According to multiple writers, it went as far as Calgary asking him to waive his NTC and he agreed. The reported price was Alex Holtz for Markstrom with about one-quarter to one-third if his salary retained ($1.5m to $2m). While GM Conroy approved it, Flames ownership nixed the deal. Since then, his game fell off considerably (I guess one could expect as they dealt away Zadorov, Tanev and Hanifin). He also blocked a trade to Los Angeles. And obviously now there are two years, not three, remaining on deal.
So even if Markstrom’s value was the same this summer as it would have been in February…one would have to view the price for Mangiapane as worth the balance of the package. And one would have to believe Palat would waive his NTC.
I think another deal that Flames fans have liked is using Markstrom to move up from Vancouver 1st to New Jersey 1st (with some other pieces attached).

Good list. It’s hard to measure a high-floor defensive dman vs an undersized scoring winger vs an upside offensive dman…almost should be two lists. One for if everyone hits their ceiling…another for if everyone hits their most probable outcome.

Thanks for doing a Devils ACGM…but trade is rough for NJD. And Mercer should sign a bridge or long-term, but not 4 years (which takes him straight to UFA).
