Would all depend on Backes waiving though which isn't likely to happen.
This is the kind of move that would appeal to Melnyk though.. Lol.. The Sens must be a money losing organization to be constantly looking for these cheap contracts.
Pretty sure I heard somewhere that Zaitsev is only getting paid $1.5M this season so I'm guessing that's why Ottawa wanted him but I'm not sure how his contract works next season, if he's due his full $4.5M I wouldn't be surprised to see Zaitsev on the move again.. Lol</div></div>
That’s just it. They can pay 22.5m over 3 years to Ryan for mediocre production on a mediocre team. Or the so something like this retain 3m on Ryan, buyout Backes and it saves 11m out of pocket, plus they add a couple of decent assets. The retention and buyout cap hit help them stay above the cap floor the next couple of years while keeping payroll down and they can play the kids getting their feet wet for when it’s time for them to actually make some noise.

Ottawa should be fine with retaining $1.25 million on Ryan and swapping him for Backes. Boston doesn't need to add any sweeteners for that. Ottawa maintains 7.25 million cap hit for 2 years but pays significantly less in actual dollars.

That swap adds term for Boston it isn't worth it then. They would need to clear cap space to do this.

Lol, saves Melnyk roughly 10-11m over 3 years. Exactly the type of move they would make. ??♂️

Here’s a fun stat.
Since joining the B’s Backes has averaged 17g per 82 games while battling injuries and losing PT. In the same time frame Ryan has averaged 17g per 82 games.

Oh no, I agree with all of this, my point was basically that you can't judge a players current value based on his ceiling. Wheeler turned out amazingly for the Jets, Boston won a cup, win-win. Even if Donato turns out great, Boston played their probabilities and window correctly, at least in my mind

They probably "gave up" on Blake Wheeler too early as well, but it also probably got em the cup. That's how these things go. Generally, clubs hold on to prospects, especially first round picks, way too long for my taste. Just because someone turns out to be a good player doesn't make it wrong to give them up at one point in time. Every 5th or 6th rounder has a chance of being the next Klingberg or Stone, so teams should never give up on those players if they followed your methodology. But you can't work like that, you have to think in terms of probabilities. Boston deemed it more probable to win a cup thanks to Coyle's contribution in the next two years than with Donato for however long they can keep him, and I agree with that decision

They didn't give up on him lol. Boston was one of the top teams in the league last year, but Donato wasn't going to be a factor for them. They had a chance to acquire a player that would fill a giant void (and he did). You gotta give to get and that's what Boston did. Best of luck to Donato, he's a really great kid. Boston fans are happy with Coyle and Minny fans are happy with Donato, sounds like win/win deal to me.

Lol. Boston traded a left shot left wing which they have plenty of for right shot C/RW that they desperately needed. Coyle was a beast in the playoffs. He is a much better fit and bigger need than Donato was. Boston fans hope Donato has a long and fantastic career. Will be no regrets. We got what we needed. Thanks.

The thing is Melnyk could save real money. Melnyk could care less about the Cap hit. He cares about what comes out of his pocket. Backes Salary is 1m this year and 3m next. If the Bruins took back salary greater than 4m, he would do it.
He could flip Callahan for Backes now and everyone is happy. Melynyk has less out of pocket expenses. Bruins get Cap relief.

Also, maximum roster size is 23, not 25.</div></div>
That is not what McAvoy will get for a bridge. Type 1 FA. Look at Seth Jones contracts as a comparable. Wasn't really focused on the roster size as they were under the cap.
