One way to move Petry
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jfkst1</b></div><div>Philly isn't a small market. I'm confused why they would not just put him on LTIR. Is Ellis' contract not insured?</div></div>
Because they could play Petry a ton to show him off and flip him at one of the next two deadlines or next offseason for more assets for their rebuild.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CupChaser</b></div><div>All three of these trades are brutal but the Sharks one is especially horrible. Pittsburgh fans have to stop viewing trading Granlund as doing the other team a favor. Even with a fraction retained, he's not a positive addition to any team. And you certainly are not going to get SJ to retain 4.5 for multiple years for a 1st round pick and scraps</div></div>
If and when he does get moved whether it is to Pittsburgh or somewhere else, the return is not going to look any better that that. SJ will have to take money back to get almost any trade to work, especially since EK can essentially hand pick where he wants to go. In this trade, they are saving $1M in the short term and $7M after 2 years while also receiving a 1st and a couple of prospects. What exactly do you expect to see as a return?

It is literally the same money in as going out. You still have to pay the guy on LTIR actual money. It is a business after all and you are saving two years of dead money. Cap space is not a thing Philly needs currently as you said yourself that they are not trying to compete. Petry alone will not move the needle enough to effect where the team ultimately finishes. And say he does play well... you can trade him for those precious picks you were just talking about.

Dubas taking on bad contracts
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jfkst1</b></div><div>I saw someone offer sheet Gustavsson in their ACGM. MIN is highly vulnerable. EDM with Bouchard would be another potential. I hope Dubas exploits everything he can.</div></div>
I like the idea personally. Offer sheet something around the $4M range and would only cost a 2nd. Don't mind the idea of Wheeler either especially if they take on Granlund and/or retain salary. Boston could help solve the goaltending issue also. Unlike the past few years, I trust Dubas to make a smart move and to fill out depth on the bottom 6.

Dubas taking on bad contracts
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jfkst1</b></div><div>Wheeler seems like a good candidate. Boston hopefully gets exploited. Vancouver would be nice but not sure they have real cap issues now after OEL buyout. TOR maybe?</div></div>
Minnesota is ripe for the picking. Potential Offer sheets or trades as they have a cap crunch.
