Dubas taking on bad contracts

Created by: futurebobmckenzie
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 23, 2023
Published: Jun. 23, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Dubas said in his presser that he will utilize the cap space and take on questionable contracts to fill holes in the roster and presumably adding picks for the future. Who would we target? What kind of returns would we get? I just put out a bunch of players that need to be moved due to cap purposes, what would we get for some of them? Not all of them are cap dumps (like Ullmark) but he needs to be moved so they can sign Swayman

Wheeler seems like a good candidate. Boston hopefully gets exploited. Vancouver would be nice but not sure they have real cap issues now after OEL buyout. TOR maybe?

I'd say Grzelcyk and Garland are the most intriguing.

There will be a couple teams that get exploited. Dubas seems to be all over that after reading about his presser.

Montreal doesn't view Edmundson's contract as bad and don't need cap space. Ulmark and Grzelcyk aren't bad contracts. I doubt Krug or Garland get moved with any sweetener, if they move at all.

I’d say Matt Murray is a good candidate, he played for the Soo afterall. Dubas loves his Soo guys and is usually willing to go above and beyond for them.

Sure. You take back Granlund or Carter. Otherwise no deal.

Could still see Gryzelcyk moved. Ullmark is a stretch i know, and with the OEL buyout I doubt Garland gets moved. Edmundson is interesting, it seems like every Habs fan praises him yet everyone wants him moved

Carter also played for the Soo so he’s staying. It’s just the Dubas way of life, you’re going to have to get used to it

Minnesota is ripe for the picking. Potential Offer sheets or trades as they have a cap crunch.

I saw someone offer sheet Gustavsson in their ACGM. MIN is highly vulnerable. EDM with Bouchard would be another potential. I hope Dubas exploits everything he can.

I like the idea personally. Offer sheet something around the $4M range and would only cost a 2nd. Don't mind the idea of Wheeler either especially if they take on Granlund and/or retain salary. Boston could help solve the goaltending issue also. Unlike the past few years, I trust Dubas to make a smart move and to fill out depth on the bottom 6.

Well Edmundson is a 29 y/o pending UFA on a rebuilding team whose biggest organizational strength happens to be at the position he plays.

MTL aren't going to extend him and several young LD have already proven capable of greater responsibility in the NHL so moving Edmundson would be best for all involved. Despite this he is still a decent player who, if healthy, can be a very important piece in a team hoping to go deep in the playoffs (as seen in his excellent play for MTL in their run to the Final in 21).

Dubas stirred the pot and created bluff on the possibility of taking on bad / questionable contracted players. Does that create fog and distraction for 31 other general managers? Has Dubas had enough time to address roster and position priorities with Sullivan before making the necessary offseason moves?

I don't see Joseph's as a bad contract... 2.95 AAV x 3 years... should score near 30 pts if he plays 82 games and contribute well defensively + on the PK

Since they are most likely going to trade DeBrincat, then it makes sense to keep Joseph and they can easily afford him then. IMO they need to bring in 2 solid middle six forwards, one veteran and one young player to grow with the team. One of these guys should come with the DeBrincat return. Formenton could come back but I'm not betting on it (chances are very low by now)

Tkachuk - Stutzle - Giroux
Greig - Norris - Batherson
?????? - Pinto - ??????
Crookshank - Kastelic - Joseph
