Me too - he’s been a stud and is easily in the top three best D prospects in the game. Foote is still better for you though. Sergachev, Hedman, and McDonagh kinda clog up the future on that side. Cernak is the only big piece on the other side, so a top four Foote is better than a bottom pairing Brannstrom.

Maybe he turns it around, but he's running out of time. He didn't flash in cleveland and it showed on the stats sheet. If he would have I think they would have kept him. I think they gave up on him.</div></div>
He certainly hasn’t been all that I hoped he’d be, but look at guys like Jaden Schwartz, Tyler Bertuzzi, Michael Ferland, Chris Kreider, Mike Hoffman, Anthony Mantha, and Josh Anderson. They didn’t light it up in the AHL, but now they can play in a top six role consistently. I’d wait on him. Players also are not transitioning the same way that they used to. Also, Cleveland is an awful team to transition on. When Gerbe, Milano, Korostelev, Dalpe, Letestu, Broadhurst, Bittner, and Robinson are being played over you, there’s not a ton of opportunity. Abramov immediately become the 2RW on Belleville. I’d be surprised if he can’t turn it around and score at a better level. Obviously Ottawa is high on him, so he might be given a top line opportunity too. Columbus gave up on him. Kinda like Milano. And by the way, Marchessault as well. Proper development goes a long ways towards determining a prospects outcome.

And why tinker with the lineup anyways? They’re red hot. Literally nobody can stop the top line. And if they want to spread out scoring in the playoffs, they can split up the line to balance and still have proven success. Can anybody even stop Kuch now? 18 points and counting in his last 5 games.

Thread:
Players the Caps should consider trading away
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Boush</b></div><div>Definitely not saying all need to/should go this year. The targeted roles are spot-on, though. You had me through "trade Niskanen." I think Orlov, Djoos, and Siegenthaler will be fixtures for the foreseeable future with Carlson. Kempny could go, but I think would be fine to keep on a third pairing role after this year, especially if Niskanen is also gone.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eli</b></div><div>Some guys, like Kempny, do okay when transitioning from playing an average of 15 minutes or less per game up to 18 or 19 minutes a night on defense. You keep those guys, after that happens.
Signing Kempny at 2.5M before anyone knew if he could play a top four role was risky. Carlson has helped it pay off.
Talking like Djoos and Siegenthaler who play 14 minutes a night are better than Kempny already is just silly. None of the three is untradeable, but this Spring, Niskanen is pretty close to untradeable, because the playoffs are coming soon, and he can average 21 minutes a night, with about three shorthanded, and has finished each of the last two seasons in the top thirty defensemen in even strength points.
Name another player you can say that about, and then carry on talking like Djoos and Siegenthaler are ready to take his place, no questions asked.
Or just say you want to rebuild the team, and I'll totally get where you're coming from.
Niskanen led the playoffs in defensive zone starts, last Spring. Not percentage, but actual shifts: <a href="http://www.nhl.com/stats/player?report=skaterpercentages&reportType=season&seasonFrom=20172018&seasonTo=20172018&gameType=3&filter=gamesPlayed,gte,1&sort=defensiveZoneFaceoffs" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">http://www.nhl.com/stats/player?report=skaterpercentages&reportType=season&seasonFrom=20172018&seasonTo=20172018&gameType=3&filter=gamesPlayed,gte,1&sort=defensiveZoneFaceoffs</a>
So he's probably worth keeping around for another minute or two, unless some team makes a generous offer on him. That's not likely to be a rebuilding team, but maybe a Western Conference playoff team wants to load up, and gives back someone younger who can play almost as tough a role?</div></div>
The thing with Djoos, Siegenthaler, Orlov, and Niskanen is that on the left side, Alexeyev, Johansen, and Fehervary will eventually need roster spots. I’m not saying that all of them will make it, but chances are that two of them will and then you have far too many LHDs in their way. Johansen needs a spot. He’s too good to keep in the AHL. Priskie and Hobbs look solid, and one will need a roster spot in the future. Niskanen is essential for this year’s playoffs, so he needs to stay put. The issue is that his cap hit is too high for the Caps. He has value, so he should be traded and replaced by a short term free agency deal or a similar to Faulk trade. Siegenthaler looks like he could have a future, but I don’t see how Djoos or one of Orlov/Kempny does. This team has a two year window, and after that they are set for a quick retool. Samsonov, Vrana, Kuznetsov, Wilson, and the whole D core and prospects is an awesome start. Throw in a few veterans like Oshie, Backstrom, and Ovi and all you’ll need is a few top nine forwards. With Holtby, Niskanen, Orlov/Kenpny, a cap rise, and Bura off the books, you’ll have enough space to retool without a huge turnover.

Yikes. Yeah maybe a couple of them, certainly not all though. For this year, trade for a bottom six PK guy, a middle six center who can win faceoffs, and a RHD rental who can ease the workload of Niskanen. Next year, trade Niskanen, trade Orlov/Kempny with Djoos or Siegenthaler for a solid LHD or a short contract and a future piece. Bring up Johansen, sign a middle six player who is willing to sign for a short amount of time, or trade Bura for another pending RFA who can play in a middle six role.

Yeah I agree that Green had no choice. But making your NHL debut against a red hot team that happens to be a division leader is not a fun way to start. I think that Green should have recalled Leighton instead. He has NHL experience as a starter and wouldn’t have suffered as badly. DiPietro is still our future backup/starter, but he has at least 2 years to go before he should play in the NHL.

And so does Pittsburgh? I agree that Philly isn’t a contender but there’s only a few points separating them and the Penguins. Philly has a great D core - it’s young and has a few needs but they’ll get better with experience and Hart seems to do well behind them. They have an incredible wealth of talented prospect in their system. A couple more would be nice but Philly’s retool is over. They’re set for the future. It’s better to just build internally and stick with Hart. He’s more proven then the King’s ransom that you’re getting. There’s a chance that none of those guys pan out. Starting Goalies are harder to find than A prospects.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>IAMAHOCKEYPLAYER69</b></div><div>no but Hart is not Carey Price, Stolarz will be just as good plus getting a ton from the garbage Coyotes</div></div>
I think Philly fans will crucify you for this, but I’ll try to give you logical reasons why Hart is the future and not Stolarz. Stolarz has not started two consecutive games and registered a .900 sv% in both. That’s a problem. He’s a great backup, but even an elite backup is not a solid starter. Hart has done it 4 times in one fewer game. I won’t say that Hart is Carey Price, but these stats shock me.
without Hart: 30.5 SAPG, 3.67 GAPG, 14-18-6
With Hart: 32.8 SAPG, 2.45 GAPG, 11-5-1
So the defense has been worse since Hart arrived yet they’ve been one of the top teams in the league since he arrived. Hart has been scarily similar to Price since he’s hit the majors. He’s singlehandedly transformed Philly into a playoff contender from a bottom three team. I’d rather keep Stolarz and Hart as an incredible goalie combo.

Bring MOJO Back Year Two

It's not the end of the world, but I haven't really seen a contract he's signed where I end up going, "yes, that's a good deal for the Caps". Kempny and Eller are the closest things to it.</div></div>
I agree, though the Wilson deal could end up being a steal. If he ends up being a 60-70 point guy, that’s more than worth 5 million. Orlov is worth that deal, but at this point with Alexeyev, Djoos, Siegenthaler, Fehervary, and Johansen in the ranks, Orlov will be expendable in the future. The Kempny deal was amazing. The term on Oshie’s deal was rough, and Kuznetsov’s deal wasn’t lovely either. So he’s not known for great signings, so why not skip the UFA market and target those players?

Bring MOJO Back Year Two
Instead of Mojo, why not take a shot at Brown and Johnsson? They’ll be pretty cheap, maybe a second and a prospect for both. They both can easily put up 40+ points and can play in a shutdown and scoring role quite well. Stralman tales 500k less and Jaskin can be signed for 750-850k - you needn’t worry about retaining his RFA status after the contract is up, there’ll be an inside replacement in two years. So Johnsson at 3.5, Brown at 2.1 equals 5.6 million, Mojo plus 500 of Stralman and 400 of Jaskin equals 5.4 million. Same cap hit, better players.

Van Riemsdyk half retained and a second. That’s the only realistic small trade involving Kappy. Faulk retained for Kappy and a pick is realistic. Also Pesce for Kappy, Zaitsev, and a second plus maybe a C prospect or pick is realistic as well. Brown, McGinn, and Johnsson could also be involved.

Yeah and I hate honking the offer sheet horn because it’s overused, but you could easily offer sheet Kapanen 4 million over 3-5 years and give up a second. If hat doesn’t go through, try Johnsson, who I’d rather over Kapanen at this point. He’ll be cheaper and the Leafs absolutely won’t match. He’s scoring almost as much in a much more limited role.

No they don’t. But still, put it this way, I’ll hive you an example. Arizona doesn’t exactly care all that much about how Tampa does, they’re a bottom feeder team, so they ask Tampa to send them a second and third with Callahan for future considerations. Carolina hears of this, and wants picks at the deadline so they offer to take him for a second and 6th. New Jersey, Vancouver, Colorado, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, NYR, Ottawa, Philly, etc. all non-contending teams with cap space and no close dealings with the Lightning, want picks at the draft, and end up getting Callahan 1-2 million retained and a third for a 7th or future considerations. That’s what happens. All 30 teams don’t suddenly boycott the Lightning. If it helps their team, they’ll do the trade. Inner-division deals tend to not happen, so I only included non playoff teams from the Atlantic division.

Totally agreed. Stralman at 3 million, Point at 8-9, Miller and Callahan gone - this team will be back contending again next season. It’s not like the big contracts that they need to move are useless players (outside of Callahan), they’re are legit top six guys who will get a good return, and Tampa has a wealth of solid prospects in Barre-Boulet, Fortier, Raddysh, Somppi, Volkov, Stephens, Yan, Katchouk, and Foote. They’re loaded for the future, not just the now. There’s no worries for them next offseason.

I hear this one a lot. Kuch is better and is only taking 9.5. He wasn’t money hungry at all. His franchise center had just signed for 8.5 a few years back and he took a million more. Marner sees Tavares and Matthews take 11-11.6 and he’s going to at least equal them in points. And I hate saying this, but Marner has outplayed Matthews. Especially defensively. Matthews has really struggled that way. Marner faces top lines all the time and has played quite well. Taxes are higher in Canada, and Eichel/Matthews had no problem taking more than Kuch. Marner has also called off contract talks until the summer - why? So he can focus and play better thus command a better contract? Toronto isn’t going to let him go. He holds most of the cards, and why shouldn’t he? He’s elite.
