<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Boush</b></div><div>Definitely not saying all need to/should go this year. The targeted roles are spot-on, though. You had me through "trade Niskanen." I think Orlov, Djoos, and Siegenthaler will be fixtures for the foreseeable future with Carlson. Kempny could go, but I think would be fine to keep on a third pairing role after this year, especially if Niskanen is also gone.</div></div>

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eli</b></div><div>Some guys, like Kempny, do okay when transitioning from playing an average of 15 minutes or less per game up to 18 or 19 minutes a night on defense. You keep those guys, after that happens.

Signing Kempny at 2.5M before anyone knew if he could play a top four role was risky. Carlson has helped it pay off.

Talking like Djoos and Siegenthaler who play 14 minutes a night are better than Kempny already is just silly. None of the three is untradeable, but this Spring, Niskanen is pretty close to untradeable, because the playoffs are coming soon, and he can average 21 minutes a night, with about three shorthanded, and has finished each of the last two seasons in the top thirty defensemen in even strength points.

Name another player you can say that about, and then carry on talking like Djoos and Siegenthaler are ready to take his place, no questions asked.

Or just say you want to rebuild the team, and I'll totally get where you're coming from.

Niskanen led the playoffs in defensive zone starts, last Spring. Not percentage, but actual shifts: <a href="http://www.nhl.com/stats/player?report=skaterpercentages&amp;reportType=season&amp;seasonFrom=20172018&amp;seasonTo=20172018&amp;gameType=3&amp;filter=gamesPlayed,gte,1&amp;sort=defensiveZoneFaceoffs" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">http://www.nhl.com/stats/player?report=skaterpercentages&amp;reportType=season&amp;seasonFrom=20172018&amp;seasonTo=20172018&amp;gameType=3&amp;filter=gamesPlayed,gte,1&amp;sort=defensiveZoneFaceoffs</a>

So he's probably worth keeping around for another minute or two, unless some team makes a generous offer on him. That's not likely to be a rebuilding team, but maybe a Western Conference playoff team wants to load up, and gives back someone younger who can play almost as tough a role?</div></div>

The thing with Djoos, Siegenthaler, Orlov, and Niskanen is that on the left side, Alexeyev, Johansen, and Fehervary will eventually need roster spots. I’m not saying that all of them will make it, but chances are that two of them will and then you have far too many LHDs in their way. Johansen needs a spot. He’s too good to keep in the AHL. Priskie and Hobbs look solid, and one will need a roster spot in the future. Niskanen is essential for this year’s playoffs, so he needs to stay put. The issue is that his cap hit is too high for the Caps. He has value, so he should be traded and replaced by a short term free agency deal or a similar to Faulk trade. Siegenthaler looks like he could have a future, but I don’t see how Djoos or one of Orlov/Kempny does. This team has a two year window, and after that they are set for a quick retool. Samsonov, Vrana, Kuznetsov, Wilson, and the whole D core and prospects is an awesome start. Throw in a few veterans like Oshie, Backstrom, and Ovi and all you’ll need is a few top nine forwards. With Holtby, Niskanen, Orlov/Kenpny, a cap rise, and Bura off the books, you’ll have enough space to retool without a huge turnover.
