Caps offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Who_is_Jimmy_Stu</b></div><div>that's a wild price to pay to move up 4 spots</div></div>
It's 7 spots, and if the picks were all in the same draft, they still wouldn't be enough. But McMichael and the first certainly should be -- that's only valuing McMichael at roughly equal to the Seattle second (pick 40).

Fun and busy draft day
I don't think that Justin Barron is worth 24th overall. In fact, if Edmonton beats Vancouver and the pick becomes #29, #31 or #32 (it can't be #30), I don't think that he's worth that, either.
Regardless, if Chicago takes Levshunov ahead of Anaheim, I can see us moving back to #5 in exchange for the Winnipeg first.

Trading Down to Trade Up
This trade doesn't make sense to me from Calgary's point of view because if the first four go as shown, then all three of the top LhDs are still on the board, so if even one of the three teams ahead of the Flames selects a forward (Catton, Eiserman, Iginla) or a RhD (Parekh), then Calgary is ensured a top leftie defense prospect. And with their current depth, neither Montreal nor Ottawa seem likely to select a LhD.

Does LA Take This
LA can't afford to upgrade from Kempe to Marner. Due to their cap situation, any trade the Kings make this off-season has to be cap-neutral or cap-positive, not $6 million cap-negative.
In no particular order, Rob Blake's objectives this summer are:
1. agree on a new contract with Quinton Byfield
2. fill both goaltender positions
3. fill out the roster
4. acquire a quality winger to turn DuBois into a productive player
We'd love to have Marner. If the cap ceiling was about $92 million, we could afford to have him. But the math is the reality.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JackSC87</b></div><div>To anyone in this comment section who either thinks this is a good deal for Toronto or thinks that LA would decline is out of their minds and so influenced by recency bias.</div></div>
Assume that the trade is two seasons of Kempe for one season of Marner, and not what is shown here, which is wildly unfavorable for Toronto.
Los Angeles would be forced to decline because to accept it would mean the Kings would have to play every minute of every game with an empty net. That $5 million difference in cap hits is the sum I'm pretty sure Rob Blake has available to fill the two goalie positions.

Marner to Utah
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lancebmx</b></div><div>Probably the best take on a Marner trade I've seen. You sent Toronto a replacement player and a project of a player with some decent potential. Utah can afford to send a bunch of seconds and still make a ton of picks.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>I kinda think Trevling would love to trade Marner. But it's a real difficult trade because of NMC and what teams can take on his cap?
So many would disagree, but I would prefer just getting a picks back in return and have 11m to spend on UFAs this summer.
Like the lineup you posted, but let's imagine Schmaltz and Haydon didn't come back in the trade. Maybe the Leafs sign Toffelli to play RW. That would leave cap for an 8th Dman like Edmundson,
It would leave the Leafs carrying 8 NHL Dmen, as I don't think there are any Marlies you could trust playing big minutes with the Leafs in 24/25. Liljegren not getting traded would also be an option.</div></div>
Thanks for the feedback, guys! :cheers

Moving up
To begin with, the difference between 3rd overall and 5th overall is 21st overall -- well up the ladder from where the Winnipeg first is even if Boston, Colorado and Edmonton win their second series.
Second, none of those young players is very appealing to Anaheim (specifically). Barron is a very good prospect and looks like he might be a second-pairing RD. However, Pat Verbeek's announced assignment for this off-season is to add a top-4 RD and we already have Gudas and Lindstrom on the roster and Luneau coming up, so he's not the jewel to us that he might (and should) be to other teams. Harris, while also a very nice prospect with second-pair potential, is a LD and we have no fewer than four young LDs already on the roster in addition to Cam Fowler plus two good prospects coming up on that side, so he isn't a needle-mover either. Kidney is, as you admit, a B prospect left-handed forward and we have a surplus of those both on the roster and in the pipeline, so he's effectively a nullity. If Chicago takes Levshunov, I think that Anaheim would only accept the Winnipeg first and another pick or a right-handed A prospect like Beck or Mesar plus your earliest 2025 second to move back to fifth overall. Easily affordable spare parts like Barron, Harris, Kidney, Heineman, RHP etc. no more close the gap in this kind of deal than they do in a proposed Trevor Zegras trade.

New look in goal and another big body
Radko Gudas is the better of the only two NHL-experienced RhDs we have in the system. He's a physical force and a locker-room favorite and also provides veteran leadership. Anaheim can't really afford to trade him unless offered a ridiculous overpay. Sorry!

Los Angeles isn't trading Philip Danault and other high-value players in a package for Mitch Marner.
Los Angeles has no intention of emulating the Toronto top-heavy, top-down method of roster construction. The results of that experiment are in, and we're out.
And I don't think that Toronto is going to trade Mitch Marner anywhere.

Someone will offer Matt Roy $5 million or more for 5 seasons.
Marchessault is a good idea at that price and term. I'd like to see him on the Ducks.
I'd re-sign Vaakanainen and Lindstrom and trade someone if necessary.
Go Ducks!

I don't think that Anaheim would be interested in Jarnkrok or Kampf because the Ducks have plenty of their own younger prospects that they probably want to bring up, but a fourth for each is fair. I really doubt that anyone is going to give you more than a sixth for Timmins and it won't be Anaheim because the Ducks have Radko Gudas, Gus Lindstrom and Tristan Luneau penciled in for the nos. 2, 3 and 4 RD and Timmins most certainly isn't the no. 1 RD Pat Verbeek is out shopping for.

Talking To Kings Exec
We Los Angeles fans are SO lucky to have an insider like you telling us what we could never figure out for ourselves. After all, as you say, "Kings fans genuinely have no understanding of the game."
(https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/830972) Or, as you said in slightly different words, "I've sat in the arena more times than you ever will. The lower bowl is largely Canadians who moved to Cali and the Kings are their second team.
The rest of the fan base is largely fair weather."
We clueless unsophisticated rubes thank you for the enlightenment from the bottom of our hearts.

Boston

I don’t believe a 2024 first is too high of a price, but I could see a 2025 2nd round pick and a good prospect as a compromise solution if Sweeney is a fan.
That said, I believe Boston is signing Elias Lindholm and trading Ullmark for a 1 round pick while freeing up cap room to resign Bertuzzi or DeBrusk</div></div>
Your last sentence, to me, sets out the ideal off-season strategy for Boston.

My calls
Before the injury at the beginning of this season which put him on the LTIR list for 6 weeks, Trevor Zegras averaged 0.77 PPG over 180 games. Over his career, Tage Thompson has averaged 0.79 PPG over twice as many games as Zegras. Now, I'm not about to suggest that Zegras is as valuable as Thompson, but what I find both fascinating and amusing is that either of the two players you're offering Buffalo plus the #5 draft pick is the very ask for Zegras we've been repeatedly countering with every time one of your Montreal cohorts suggests something like the offer for him shown here . . .

City of Gods
Haven't you heard about our Pierre-Luc DuBois problem? It was in all the papers . . . when you have a guy with a really big cap hit, it restricts all your other moves, especially for a team constructed from the bottom up, with high-quality complementary players like Mikey Anderson and Phillip Danault, whose combined cap hits will be less than Mitch Marner's new contract. If only there was some team that could serve as an abject example of what's wrong with building a team with four or five REALLY big-ticket stars at the top, precluding the collection and retention of good middle-level guys like Zach Hyman and Michael Bunting . . .

Im horrible at this
Mesar and fifth overall get you the third overall.
The Winnipeg first and fifth overall get you the third overall and the Boston 2024 second.
Both of these presume that Chicago selects Levshunov at #2.
If they don't, and Anaheim wants to trade Zegras (highly doubtful), <a href="/users/NHLfan10506" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@NHLfan10506</a>'s formulation works: Zegras plus the Edmonton 2024 first plus the Boston 2024 second for fifth overall.
I don't see any realistic formulation of assets you'd be willing to give up for Zegras AND a move from fifth overall to third overall unless it would be Mesar, Reinbacher and both of your next two firsts, with very little or no protection on the 2025 pick.

I think that the Bruins either believe that there's value there or they don't. They need a center behind Charlie Coyle. I don't think that Boston would need to hedge their bets with the first. But I could be wrong. However, you're absolutely right that if the Bruins asked for a high draft pick, the Kings would back away.
It would have helped if I'd said "I disagree with the first half of point two."

Los Angeles isn't going to trade a first and a second for a rental goalie even though Ullmark is probably the best one available (rental or not), and with their cap situation the Kings can't afford him unless you take significant cap back or retain 50% (which wouldn't be so bad since his contract only has a year to run).

Long contract and level of overpay probably requires a 2024 first from LA and I’m not sure they do it then.
The Bruins are probably better off signing Lindholm or Stephenson plus trading Ullmark separately.
Coyle is a center and will be a top 6 line center barring massive improvement from Poitras</div></div>
I disagree with point number two, but number 1 is accurate and numbers 3 and 4 are golden.
