2024 offseason - just need to find 1m in cap room
Yep, this is pretty much what it's going to look like. I think the most likely option is Mittelstadt signs a three year deal around 5.5 per. That way he and Colton will hit UFA at the same time, and by then we will keep one of them and Cal Ritchie will be on his ELC for either 2C or 3C. Sakic did the same thing for MacKinnon and Johnson years ago.
Also, I really want to like Wood, he plays hard every shift, but he has been absolutely anemic offensively and that contract preventing us from resigning Trenin and Duhaime might be a big blemish on our roster.

Manson, when healthy, is such an important piece of our d corp. He is the only one with size, and I think unless management feels his age/health will affect him on the final two years of his contract, he is more important than being able to sign a depth forward. Just my opinion though.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheeDjeeEem</b></div><div>not true, and why do you think Mitts is a good 2C ?</div></div>
I'm honestly not sure if you are trolling at this point or not.
He was the leading scorer on an awful Buffalo team this year. He will obviously slot behind McKinnon as 2C, and likely put up more points playing with any combination of Nichuskin, Lehkonen or Rantanen. MacFarland is not going to trade Byram for someone who is not going to be a long term part of this team.
It doesn't matter what I think, I'm literally just paraphrasing what MacFarland and Sakic have said at press conferences. They view Mitts as the long term solution at 2C.
As far as the cap space is concerned: Yes, we literally need that extra 4 million if we wanted to keep Mittelstadt and ice a full lineup.

RyJo doesn't cost a '24 2nd to move this summer and you don't have to anyway.... it's not worth a 1st to save 2.8M of cap space. Trading him at next years deadline is even cheaper, despite the '26 2nd.</div></div>
If RyJo's cap hit was still on the books, we would not be able to resign Mittelstadt this summer.

I like the Mitts and Jones signings a lot and would LOVE to have Trenin for 4 years.
I wouldn't give term to Duhaime, I like his play style but as a rule it's not good to give term to those 4th line grinder types.
I would imagine Walker, after a career year, is going to try and get north of 3 mil AAV, and is likely just a rental. I would predict a contract similar to what Manson got, and we can't afford that.
Drouin to me is the wildcard here. Could he get 3-4 mil on the open market after a 50 point season? I think so. Would he be willing to take significantly less money to keep playing with the Dogg? Possibly. If Landskog comes back though, I don't see any way we can keep him unless he is willing to sign for another (basically) league minimum contract.

While I agree Annunen is the better goalie, I think it would have been smart to take Raanta. We have the deadline cap space and we could just assign him to the AHL until we might (hopefully don't) need him. Small chance that he would play for us, but literally zero risk.

Walker is significantly better (at least for this season specifically), you are legit the only person who thinks Peeke is better.
Avs don't have a 2nd for the next two years, meaning we would probably have to ship out a prospect or the first to get rid of RyJo anyway. Picking up Mittelstadt and trying to move RyJo's contract in the summer would have been very stupid.

Agreed on the Walker vs Drouin debate, but I think we would prioritize a top 6 forward over Walker, unless they think Kovalenko can play in the top 6.
Also I don't know have any idea on what it would take to keep Walker. I imagine it would be similar to Mansons 4x4.5?

My thought too. Best case scenario is he crushes it at 2C, then when he's up for a new contract, we can use Colton's 4mil to resign him and have Ritchie take over 3C on his ELC.

If that's the case then Avs literally cannot afford him without moving another piece. It will go to arbitration and I have a hard time believing an arbiter will award him more than that.

Mittelstadt isn't gonna sign anything less than $5 mil AAV, he has Arb rights. I think 3 years is the right contract length though.
If Landeskog comes back Drouin is likely gone unless he is willing to sign for *slightly* above league minimum.

I just picked the Habs, could be any team. I also don't think it's out of the realm of possibility for RyJo to have good playoff production this year and raise his trade value. He has a higher career PPG in the playoffs (.80 vs .64 in the regular season).

Asssuming Landy comes back, I think Bjustad will be the best we can do at 2C with our cap space, unless we can get someone like Roslovic on a 1 year prove it deal or we'll have to trade a defenseman.

What comparable are you using? Zaitsev had a 4.5 cap hit with two years remaining, and he cost a 2nd. RyJo, though not worth his salary, has much more value than Zaitsev. I think if he were to be traded over the summer a 3rd would be enough.

When he gets traded this summer he will only have one year left. Zaitsev was traded for a 2nd and he had 2 years remaining at 4.5. Johansen is still a serviceable bottom 6 center.
