Sens Deadline. Lets. GO.
Very interesting! I would do the Pitt. and StL deals, but not the others. My hope is we can trade Phaneuf without retained salary, which is why it will be difficult, and probably doesn't get done 'til the draft, and also will likely have to include a pick, but hopefully in return we get a healthy forward that can help us, at reasonable dollars. I can't see Ryan being traded until Karlsson's new deal kicks in - so a year from now at the draft. In the meantime, hopefully he can have a good year next year, and drive up his trade value. Nice job!

Boy it would be fun to see what that top line could do! Unfortunately, I have to agree with most of the other comments, the dollars just don't make sense. I do agree with many of your opening comments though. Things are not as bleak as some would have us believe.

Interesting, We probably won't get him then, or at least if I was GM, I'd want someone with a possible upside, That would allow me to save face for dealing such a good player, but for me the pick is more important. Do you think Hoffman is a good fit - still young, signed three more years, and can score.

Didn't think we'd be here last June haha
While I almost always agree with your teams, this time I think you have overvalued some Sens assets. Are you thinking the Pens offer up a 1st rounder because we're taking back Hagelin's contract. I really can't see Pageau getting a 1st rounder in return, and while I hate to loose him, if we could get that for him we probably should make that deal. A 2nd rounder, maybe, but a good prospect and a first is asking a lot, even with a bad contract in return.
I wonder why Jenner has been rumoured to be on the trading block for so long? Sure, he may not be a 30 goal scorer, but a big young player that is still a RFA - usually you hang onto. I wonder if there are issues there?
And finally, I think if Dorion could get a 3rd rounder for Burrows, he should jump at it. Sorry, I like what you're trying to do, but I don't think it is realist.

Sens Push
I like what you did here very much. I have to admit, I follow the Sens very closely, but I am not as familiar with some of the rest of the league. But that said, I hope at the very least Dorion can get rid of the Burrows contract and also open that spot for a young guy in the org. to have a chance. I like the Phaneuf deal - bad contract for bad contract, same term, similar real dollars, with two players that can still contribute something (in Gaborik's case if healthy). And while I don't know the Columbus players that well, I would be prepared to give up the players you name in exchange for a decent Dman, and goalie prospect. Condon is not an ideal backup, and andy is hard to back up - so you might as well go with a young cheaper option, with an upside. Hate to give up Smith and Harpur, but in Harpur's case too much of a gentile giant, and we need more nasty from him.
The one thing I would say about Phanuef is, I suspect he adds a lot to this team, espcially off the ice. And his contract we might have to live with. Bobby Ryan's contract is untradeable, espcially if he can't stay on the ice, but after next year, when Karlsson is on the new deal, they might be able to trade the last three years, with some retained salary. but for sure one of those deals will have to go before Karlsson's starts. Nice job!

Leafs Land The Biggest Fish
Traveres could no doubt get more money elsewhere, but coming from Toronto, and playing for an organization like the Islanders, he might take less money to play in Toronto. Can you imagine winning a cup as the hometown boy in Toronto - think of the perks. I can guarantee he would never have to pay for a drink when he goes out (If he goes out) again. And this from a Sens fan.

Ideal Line combos
very interesting!! I think it could work. I like having a right shot on every line, so I agree with playing Ryan on the right side. With so few right shots on the team, we can't afford to play him on the left side. And he has played with Pageau in the past, and not badly. It would be interesting to see what that top line could do. I anticipate Colin White coming up at some point, and I would play him with Smith and Dingel, on that third line. I would switch the D pairings a little. I would move Phaneuf to play with Chabot, and let Claesson play with Ceci. I like Harpur with Karlsson. I would leave those pairing be for a while, and only change things if injuries happen. I see this as the best options going forward this season. Oduya and Burrows can still be effective but only in spot start roles.

Not taking the Turrisk
I think if Ottawa could sign Turris for 6 mil., we should hang on to him. Also those deals within the division are very hard to get done. As for Ceci, because he is an RFA at seasons end, I would still let the season play out. I think there will be a lot of options on the RD.
As far as in season deals, I can see Wideman being dealt, Hammond obviously, and I think Nick Paul would benfit from a fresh start. With the Sens looking for Salary relief (Hammond), and a bottom six veteran forward that they did not find in camp, in the 2 mil range.

Stephen King's The Resigning
Again, I like your numbers. I think all the contracts are reasonable, but even though I think the Ceci contract is reasonable, I don't see Ottawa (Melnyk) paying that much for, and keeping Ceci if Chabot is the one ending up playing the second pairing minutes. On the other hand, they could package Ceci with Phaneuf's contract and still get something in return. Being RFA at the end of this season might mean they do not even have to sign him - perhaps the new team would prefer to negotiate themselves.
But first things first, lets sign Turris and Stone to those deals and we'll go from there.

Ottawa upgrades
I don't know if that is enough to get a deal done with Col., but it should be. Looking back at deals like Hall for Larson, etc... this is a good deal for Sakic and the Avs. I think Sakic has misplayed his hand, his leverage has past its strongest point. Duchene has played nice to this point, but every one has a tipping point, and the best thing for everyone is to make a deal before the regular season. And I don't think Ottawa should offer any more than this.

Sens a Duchy front runner?
With the Sens wanting Chabot to play the right side, then Ceci does become tradeable. I would trade White, even before his injury, for the simple reason of burning that year on the entry level contract. Having two years to prove yourself and then coming up on the next deal so soon, make is difficult for the player and possibly expensive for the team. Chlapik is having a wonderful camp, and I would not want to loose him.
If the Sens are seriously considering this it must mean they think Chabot can play the right side and play in now. So hear are what I think the pairings will be:
Claesson - Karlsson
Phaneuf - Chabot
Oduya - Wideman
Boro

Opening line up considering injuries
As for the defence, it looks like Boucher wants Chabot to play the right side. I think he will definitely get the chance, at least until Karlsson is back. So with that one change, I think you have it right.
As for the future, it will be interesting. I agree, I like Jaros, but I think it will be really hard to crack the line up on the right side with Karlsson, Chabot and Ceci there for the forseeable future. He will likely play in Bellville for a couple of years, providing great depth. If he is here sooner, that probably means he has surpassed one of those others, and that would be a good problem to have. On the left side, I have traded Phaneuf, with many thanks for a job well done, but that contract has to go. I don't resign Oduya, but I think he is a great signing as a stop gap measure. And I believe Wideman might even be delt this year, in season. So that leaves Boro, who will continue albeit in a limited role, Claesson, Harpur and Englund or Erkamps. And I believe that defence could be outstanding.

Tough news on White. I think he had a real chance, if he played well while Brassard was injured to stay up all year. Now he will play catch up for a while, but a year in Bellville could be very good for him. I believe the most likely scenario will be to move Smith back to centre until Brassard is healthy, but that really opens the door for Chlapik to play wing.
It will also be fasinating to see how the log jam at centre plays itself out. Here is one possible scenario, White and Brown look like potential stars in the NHL, Turris, Brassard and Pageau all have good years. That means someone is likely going to get traded. Even though I love him, I feel like Turris is the one to be dealt. He will be most expensive, but also worth the most. We package him and Phaneuf in a deal to Van., somewhere both might like to play. We don't get quite as much in return for Turris because of Phaneuf's contract (although in real dollars it won't be that bad) and Phaneuf still has things to offer a team, mentoring young pros like he has done here. Hopefully we get a high pick and a prospect in return.

Interesting, So you have Chlapik playing so well in camp that the coaches have to take him, at least to start. The only change I might make, if that is the case is flipping Chlapik with Dzingel, cause I can't see Boucher playing two rookies on one line. Very well could happen, the other option is playing Smith on LW replacing Chlapik, and the fourth line of Thompson, Pyatt and maybe McCormick.
I think your defense pairings are spot on, with the minutes being given out fairly evenly. I see Phaneuf "mentoring" Chapot all year, but I think it will be fasinating to watch who ends up being paired with both Karlsson and Ceci long term.

I think that trade is reasonable, but to date Sakic has not been reasonable. If things start getting angry in Col., between the two sides then maybe a deal like that happens. With MacArthur now being on LTIR, and Melnik only paying the 20% of his salary, maybe he would allow such a deal, but it would likely involve more dollars going out to match Duchene salary coming in, which is why I see Dzingel as part of the trade. Ceci played hurt all of last year, and while Dion offers things in terms of skills, mostly the dreaded "intangibles", he also can be a liablilty to play with. I still think Ceci will develop into a very good defenseman with lots of ability both ofensively and defensively - so I don't think he is going anywhere. I do think Paul will be dealt, but his value is not very high right now, so he is more likely to go in a small deal for a low draft pick or be a small part of a larger deal for someone like Duchene. It will be a fasinating year in Ottawa, with lots of young players pushing veterans for spots, and vets trying to earn good contacts, and some trying to justify the ones they have. I also feel like there is a silver lining with the injuries to Karlsson & Brassard, a great opportunity for young players to earn the trust of the coaching staff.
I don't want to come across as critical of your team. So many I see are not worth commenting on, but this one is very reasonable and interesting, which is why I have rambled on so long. Good job!

When Ott. got Phaneuf from Toronto, I believe Bob McKenzie reported that Tor. agreed to pay the signing bonus on the length of the contract, which if true means that Phaneuf is not costing nearly as much as it seems, (6m, 5.5m, 5.5, & 3m). Dion is what he is, not very mobile, but a pain in the ass to play against, and a very "good Pro". He keeps himself in good shape and therefore may remain as effective as he is for some time yet. That is why I believe when the circumstance of the expansion draft happened, Ottawa wanted to keep Methot, but with the depth on defense in the organization, they decided that moving one of the big contracts on defense was priority one. I think Phaneuf will be paired with Chabot, and be a mentor, like he was with Ceci last year. He also has played both sides, which is an asset. With only 14 m. left in real salary after this year, I think it will be easier to trade Dion next season.
I think Ott. will take a wait and see attitude through camp, hoping to avoid the inevitable injuries, and go from there. I do expect a deal, but a relatively small one, and most likely in season.(Hammond & Wideman?) Looking at the big picture, Ott. is very well positioned, with only Stone and Turris deals to do this coming year. But it is a critical year as far as player development - Chabot, Harpur, Jaros, White, Brown, Chlapick, because in two years we will need those guys to fill big roles on the team, not just from a team performance stand point but from a financial one two. We gotta sign Erik!!
I don't want to come off as critical, because I think this is a very interesting and possible scenario you have created. Good job.

Moving Ryan and Phaneuf (No way)
I like your creativity with this team, and we are in agreement regarding what is wrong with the team going forward. Having said that, compared to a lot of teams there is not a lot wrong with Ottawa. The bad contracts are not as bad as some teams, and there is a lot of talent coming in the very near future. Having said that I think the Hammond deal is very well done, I agree with the first comment about the Philly deal, and ultimately with all the salary retained in the deals, I don't feel we're much further ahead.
I feel like the team as it stands now is going to be very good - four strong useful lines, and hopefully the young D play well enough that Phaneuf doesn't have to play a lot of minutes. They should make the playoffs, so Eugene can pocket some more money (to pay Eric), and as the term on Phaneuf and Ryan's deals gets shorter, they hopefully will be easier to move and actually get something in return.
Good Job!

Trade Ryan
I was entertaining the thought of a Ryan trade to NJ myself, although I too don't like the idea of giving up a first round pick with him. Jersey seem low on Dmen, why not package Ryan with a LD,(NJ lots of RD listed) with some possible salary retention in order to get a better pick in return.
Also, curious that you have DiDomenico making the team ahead of White, Brown, Chlapik or even Paul. I'm not sure about that - coaches favourite?
Also not sure about Vanek. We get rid of one slow forward with good hands for another, albeit at a lower cost. I wonder how much Drew Stafford is going to cost, I might be willing to take a flyer on him.

my advice for Pierre
First off, thanks for your response!
You're probably right, asking for a pick and a higher one at that, is asking too much. But I would argue that both players have disappointed, and with a high water mark of 26 goals and making a salary of 6 mil, a few years removed from that high, you don't think there is a risk for Ott. taking the player even at 24 yr. old, then I believe you should think again. And if, as you put it, "Colorado is sold on blowing the team up and resetting with younger pieces", then why are they offering "a super talented 24 year old". I get that in order to get something you have to give up something, and I ca't fault Sakic for asking for the moon for his players, but I am utlimately saying, Dorion don't give up the prospects for a little salary cap relief.

Gaze into my Crystal Ball
It's a very interesting look ahead. I hope we can sign Karlsson for ten and a half, but I also think that Phaneuf's contract will be movable in another year. The actual dollars to be paid will be very little, the problem will be finding a team he is willing to go to, which like Ottawa, doesn't mind the cap space it uses up and likes what Phanuef still brings to the table. That also depends on how the young defeseman on the team develop, but there are a lot of them and I'm optimistic that enough of them will pan out. I do agree with Devino10, that Chaplik will be part of this team.
Good job though!

I could see all that happening, and I could live with it. I still hate to see Ceci part of the Duchene deal, but you have to give up something to get something. And I like the salary cap relief going forward. With McDavid signing for so much, I can't see Karlsson taking much less when his deal is up. I wish Edmonton had given McDavid what Crosby is making. I think that would have been generous, especially considering he would still be RFA, but I understand there are many factors.

Funny, but I agree with both the other comments. I like you ideas, but first round picks are not included in deals lightly, so I don't think we could expect to get back those picks. I'd hate to loose L. Brown, and with C. White and Chabot likely to make the team and play important roles, I also don't see a third rookie making the team this year - no matter how good.

Is this fair?
I don't know why there are so many Ceci haters out there? He is a right D, with good size, skates very well, and if we take Dorion at his word, he was dealing with a broken finger for much of the year, not to mention a leg injury late in the season, which I suspect hampered him in the playoffs. I would argue that he still has a ton of potential, but even if you want to trade him, his value is down because of the numbers he posted which I think were due to the injuries.
I also think that while Dion was good for Cody in a lot of ways, Phaneuf's mobility is not getting better and there were plenty of times where he was the weak link in the pair.
As for this team you've built, I would argue the defense is weaker than last year, and you've taken on salary, which the owner would probably not agree to anyway.
