The thing is ARI can demand 1st round picks to take on those contracts. Because to them it doesn't matter if MTL is willing to pay the price or not. They just want to load up on high picks.
Not doing other teams any favor's

I don't think Montreal would want to pay Martinez 5+ mil to play 3rd pairing. Also he would just be blocking the development of our prospects.

That is also too much for Comtois. He was also on that 2018 WJC roster so i wouldn't touch any of those 20 or so players with a 50 foot pole until the investigation is over.</div></div>
I can’t say for comtois himself but like half those players weren’t there and confirmed not there already and I think comtois was one of the ones not there

Wait to use any cap space
In general VGK can spend up to 12.8 mill over the cap (Nolan + Weber + Lehners LTIR hits)
So honestly I wouldnt be surprised if they just spend that much upgrading their team with some rentals here and there
Expecting
Stastny, Kessel, and maybe De-Haan to sign soon

That Zaitev trade makes no sense for Ottawa. Ottawa needs a RD they can find a 4th liner anywhere. They much rather just use the pick to dump him with no return.

Arizona will hit the cap floor when they re-sign Crouse/Hayton.
As for acquiring a bad contract with no assets attached so they can potentially get a pick at the deadline? That seems like the opposite of what teams taking on cap dumps do...you get something attached to him now, and then, if it works out, you flip him and get something more. If it doesn't work out, then you've still got the asset from before.

this is a very easy decline by the avs.
Brännström is a pretty underwhelming Dman, to the point you have to question if will ever be an NHL regular
Formenton is linked to the WJC assualts, until hes clear and shown to have 0 involvement, no team is going to touch him with a 10 foot pole.

Murray was better than Allen last season. Murray is also more likely to be the starting goalie that the Leafs need. He has at least been that goalie before while Allen has never measured up.

Fair deal leafs side
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Cardiac</b></div><div>To say ottawas defense is better than montreals is laughable. Allen’s save percentage was one .001 less than murray. One is cheaper and better and the other is more expensive and worse. Knies isn’t untouchable and Hutson is solid return for him.</div></div>
Allen's save percentage was .001 less but the underlying fancy stats are much worse. It's because Ottawa allowed much more dangerous chances than Montreal did. Murray was better in every way than Allen last season and has been better across his career. There shouldn't be any doubt who is the better goalie between the 2 and it's not the one you want it to be.
Beyond that, you are ignoring what the Leafs need in net. The Leafs don't need another backup, they need someone capable of being the starting goalie. Murray has at least done this in his career, including playoff runs, while Allen has never been able to. It's much more likely for a 28 year old to return to form than it is for a 32 year old to break new ground.

Canadiens of Montreal Future
Minnesota has 13 players on the roster for the 2023-2024 season and only $17.1 million of cap space. I really doubt that they're going to use up $6.5 million of that cap space on Brendan Gallagher and his awful contract, leaving them only $10.6 million to spread among 9 players including Matt Boldy and replacements for Matt Dumba and Dmitry Kulikov.

Not That Bad Really
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ploppz</b></div><div>You have one painfully glaring issue both right now and in the future and it's called the right side of the d-core.
Your top 2 RD are David Savard and Chris Wideman (horrendous), and that's followed up by Justin Barron who's gonna be good someday but this year he's gonna get thrown to the wolfs along with Harris and probably Guhle too for at least a few games this season.
As for the prospects, Guhle, Norrlinder; Hutson and Harris all share one thing in common. They ALL play on the left. The only future you have on the RD is Barron and that Logan Mailloux kid, unless i'm missing somebody.
I would LOVE for the Habs to send Anderson and/or Dvorak packing while they still have value for some future on that RD!
Also, i agree that the Habs might as well keep Hoffman. I don't think they're gonna get anything worthile for him so they might as well keep him for the goals and entertainment while they stink.
Also also, nobody wants Drouin and nobody is sure as hell giving up any 2nd round picks or prospects for him, so let that dream go my man. He also hasn't been healthy since 18-19.</div></div>
You're not wrong
Issue is i think our fix on RD is one no one's considered
Xhekaj plays both LD and RD almost making the roster last year as 2nd last cut behind Ghule
Xhekaj finished the year by Eliminating Ghule head to head out classing him every step of the way
Ghule wasnt playing weak either he just couldnt match Xhekaj's Physicallity
Picture Markov trying to battle Weber type deal
I think while Xhekaj will start this year in Laval likely playing with Ghule's as his top RD
I think the next season he'll be in the NHL as we sell off Veterans
Logically Schuneman should be given this role he's earned it IMO
But Xhekaj is one of those rare Leadership type Lumberjacks you find here and there.
Couple this with the fact he sat out a year only able to really work on his shot during lockdown
He scored more in 17 games as a 21 year old in Junior then all the rest of his time in junior combined.
Went on the a Memorial Cup Final just falling short to the host team (NB dog in the race and even i didnt think they'd win)
He coming in on the highest of notes and might actually push out a roster player earlier then later or push Matheson to RD even though Hughes said he'll play LD.
I'm really high on Xhekaj more then any other single D prospect not in the NHL cause he's a warrior in a depth pool of Skill and Talent who will see it as his role to protect them.
That said i do still fully expect MTL to get another RD with the TDL moves whether Via Draft or Trade.
Ideally i'd give up my left nut to get Durzi aka Suzuki's best friend and former teammate
They were lethal on Power Play together and MTL needs that
But LAK fans on here dont want to trade him and even OS i know they cant match they claim they will

Why give up so much for a player you can get for free in two years. It's not like adding Dubois now makes the Habs a Cup contender anyway. Just be patient. Let's see what Suzuki and Dach can do as a one two punch down the middle and evaluate if we even need Dubois in two years.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ploppz</b></div><div>This is the first pretty decent offer for Dubois I've seen on here. But like Windjammer says, taking on Hoffman and Armia who's an overpayed 4th liner isn't very likely at all.
Maybe Kirby Dach, FLA's 1st round pick and Anderson is a more reasonable offer? I'm pretty sure the Habs would think such an offer is too much to give up tho.
It also completely depends on what kind of season Dach has. Does he have 1C or 3C potential, we don't know just yet!</div></div>
Yeah Dach + a first + Anderson is getting a little too rich from my perspective. I think this Dubois is dead as habs got not cap space
