I guess from the Hawks point of view...it's fine either way. ultimately means that TOR is likely to keep him or they'll buy him out vs paying the cost required to shed that cap.

A trade COULD be done where the Hawks actually buyout Murray and take the full cap hit off TOR. Treliving probably isn't just thinking about this year. Maybe Brodie and Murray sent to CHI? I like Brodie. I don't think he's worth his current cap hit, BUT he's better than Zaitsev. That's for sure.
Caveat being, I haven't kept up on whether or not Murray is "injured"...I have a feeling that'll work itself out.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ritzy</b></div><div>That's an interesting point, but arguing that value of what would be sent to CHI seems unnecessary as no one here will agree. I don't think Brodie gets moved, but that's just me.
TOR brass has been pretty tight lipped regarding Murray's health. Typical media speculation is all we have at the moment.</div></div>

A very miniscule, microscopic portion of me slightly feels a tiny bit close to kind of bad for Leaf fans on their current cap situation... but not really.

2nd window for after signing RFAs who filed for arbitration (see the buyout FAQ). The only question is whether or not he is injured. Cannot buyout an injured player.

Buyout is option #1
But if a trade were to transpire, the cost to dump Murray should be around just a late 2nd or early 3rd rd pick (see NYI dumping Bailey 1x5mil for a 2nd pd pick)

Toronto should just keep him and try to win.
The rental market for wingers is set. Look at debrincat, Reinhart, fiala, buchnevich etc.
Not worth it to a team trying to win. Treat him as your own rental

You all are being way too harsh. Last I checked, teams still need 4th line grinders to eat a few minutes a night.

Continuing the mystifying pattern of decent players signing for less than their Qualifying Offers. With only $29 million in cap space, I'm glad we saved $61,625 on him.

Louder for the people in the back
Wait, you're telling me that some CF users just look at cap space on the front page without clicking through to look at a team's total roster situation? I'm shocked, I'm outraged, I'm...well, actually yeah, that checks out.
I think that Gustavsson might take a little less AAV on a bridge deal, though - If I'm Bill Guerin I point at the Stuart Skinner/Pytor Kochetkov extensions from this spring as more of a guideline. Getting him down to $2.5-2.8M AAV at least gives you enough to run a full 23-man roster without dumping anyone, but damn, there's not a lot of fat to trim from this roster. The only $3M+ contract I can see being moved is MAF's - and that's if you get him to agree to waive, *and* if you're okay running with two relatively inexperienced goalies next season (assuming you just bring in a street UFA and don't rush Wallstedt.)

How do you win the Nylander situation
I think you're using the wrong DeBrincat trade, though - Nylander has this year left at $6.9M before needing a new deal - just like Cat had last season left at $6.4M. I'd argue that the original package Ottawa sent is the value the Leafs should be trying to get.
To answer the question your title poses, though? You win the Nylander situation by keeping him. The team is constructed to be a Cup contender this year with a ton of expiring contracts, and any trade for Nylander is going to be the equivalent of trading a dollar bill for a handful of change. If he walks this summer, sure it sucks not maximizing him, but I'd argue that nothing you're going to bring into town in a Nylander trade is going to add as much as value to the team for this season as simply keeping Willie around would.

Yeah this is a pretty dramatic lowball. Not sure why leafs fans would propose a deal like this for a nylander Boeser swap essentially. Boeser doesn’t carry much value right now.

They can only if the arbitration case goes the whole way and results in an award. In the scenario above it obviously didn't, as they never award 4 year deals.
So Edmonton won't get another buyout window this summer (if it plays out as above).

Yes, everyone knows all players at age 20 when they were on a historically bad team are exactly what they'll always be. If he had zero NHL games played like most of his draft class, we'd be talking about him as a top prospect. I'm not saying Columbus hasn't mismanaged him or even that you're wrong in saying he's nothing more than a third liner, but you're out to lunch if you think it's fair to call him a bust.

CBA §50.5(d)(i)(B)(5) shall have no application to a multi-year SPC that has: (1) total compensation (Player Salary and Bonuses) that is either the same as or increases from one League Year to the immediately subsequent League Year, and (2) a Signing Bonus, if any, that is payable in the first year of the SPC only.
So yes, the Kings can buy out Kopitar's contract just like any other contract and get the full cap relief that any other contract would.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Not_Isles5513</b></div><div>My issue with the signing is that they didn’t take Michov. It just seems like Hughes and Gorton has done everything they can to minimize the impact of their top picks. After all, the five guys taken immediately after Slafkovsky are all better than the former #1 overall pick. Then you have the Dach and Newhook trades where Montreal overpaid for non-premium talents. Franchise looks like a mess rn imo.</div></div>
I suspect the optics of Montreal's recent draft picks look a lot better if they didn't galaxy-brain the Slafkovsky pick and just took one of Wright or Cooley. Going back-to-back on the wings with the high-end draft picks probably didn't sit well with someone in management, even if Michkov was the BPA.
I still think Reinbacher is a great pick. I'm hoping Montreal found their Seider in that man.
