That’s the only reason I’d see them target a hard bottom-six center. But I feel like Myers could potentially to that job, or they could find someone much cheaper (cap-wise) to give themselves flexibility to do other things at the deadline.

I’ve read Eller to Colorado in a couple of places, but I just don’t see it. He was a quality 3C on the Cap’s cup team a few years ago, but has obviously taken steps back since then. Colorado needs a quality middle six forward, if not a top six forward, to round out their lineup. I don’t think Eller is it.

I know, it’s going to be a squeeze next year. Curious if they try to grab a guy with another year or two left on his deal plus retention at the deadline. A team friendly contract would make a big difference in 22-23.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>earl08</b></div><div>Here's how I view Byram's situation and how I'd handle it:
The Avs should give him a one year, show me you're healthy deal.
Byram has no arbitration rights and is an RFA. He's missed the majority of the games he could have played in three seasons. There is significant risk in committing to Byram while there is no immediate deadline to do so. I suspect there is a lot of trust from Bo towards the Avs, with their special teaching he got in his D+1 season, and the freedom they gave him to get healthy last season. As GMCM, I'd ask him for a favor, to sign a cheap, one year deal, to help with the cap crunch for one season only. I promise him a long term deal the next year as long as he proves he can be healthy. That season we expect the cap to go up significantly, plus you can justify moving on from either Toews or Girard or both.
But if you jump the gun right away, you might end up with another banged up roster from a long, challenging playoff run again, but now have no depth and have to make panic moves. It's just too risky for no reason IMO.
Other NHL players have given favors like this, notably Kevin Labanc and Mark Giordano recently.
The Avs have built a culture of trust with players. They promised ERod and Newhook a chance at 2C and they delivered. They promised Meyers an NHL chance and he definitely got more than he deserved. Nuke was quoted saying he gave the Avs a hometown discount bc the Avs built him up from literally nothing. Landy accepted a discount on AAV compared to what he surely could have got as UFA. The current FO does right by former guys like Jost, Duchene, Barrie, Kerfoot and Soderberg, who were sent not to the trash heap which would have been totally justified, but instead places with a genuine chance at success. Even Kaut they sent to hang with best bud Tomas Hertl. This is Sakic's biggest legacy IMO and why players will continue to do the team favors when asked.</div></div>
It would really help the Avs if he took a one year deal, and I understand what you’re saying about trust. I just don’t know that it’s realistic. The Labanc thing kind of blew up for San Jose with how poorly he’s played on his new deal. Giordano is a vet playing in his home town, who’s already made plenty of money.
If I’m Byram, and more so if I’m Byram’s agent, I’d want to have at least some financial certainty in the next contract. No doubt that the Avs were very accommodating through his concussion issues over the last 24 months. But he still has to look out for himself. God forbid, if he takes another big headshot it could end or dramatically alter his career.

I think Byram is going to get more, probably on a bridge ($4M-$5M?), or mayyyybe a longer term deal like we’re seeing with Samuelsson, Anderson, etc. unfortunately I think that means they move on from Girard this summer.

Ducks Trade DNVR
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Well, if missing the playoffs isn't in MacFarland's mind, he's committing GM malpractice. A responsible GM has to prepare for all eventualities, not just the good ones. So any move he makes has to be done only after considering the possible effect of every possibility, including missing the playoffs. For example: Suppose he decides that he DOES want to trade his 2023 first. Do you think that there's any chance he won't lottery-protect that pick? Now take it one step further: if he thinks of that, do you think that the idea of missing the playoffs isn't far behind?
I suspect that Anaheim would be likely to accept the 2024 pick in some deal for Henrique. That should carry a lot of weight when MacFarland considers alternative proposals that require the 2023 selection.</div></div>
Let me re-phrase: I don’t think anyone is preparing to miss the playoffs. Sure, teams take precautions all the time to protect themselves from the unthinkable. Like you said, it’s the prudent thing to do. Look at the Tarasenko trade. St. Louis gets the later of the two first round picks the Rangers own.
But as the GM of a team that expects to compete for back-to-back Stanley Cups, I wouldn’t expect a 2023 vs 2024 pick to prevent McFarland from pulling the trigger on a trade he thinks will meaningfully improve his team. I’d also argue that the risk of missing the playoffs next season is just as significant as it is this season. The real value in the 2023 pick comes from the strength of the draft class.

Also would want to make it the 2024 1st.</div></div>
I wouldn’t be concerned with the quality of linemate in Anaheim. Henrique would have plenty of talent available to play with in Colorado.
I’d hope that a vet like him who spent a ton of his career at center can make the transition back to his natural position. But I understand where you’re coming from. There would be some adjustment.

I’d have 0 issues with a ‘24 1st round pick instead of ‘23. I think selling teams are going to press hard for the “23 picks though, given the strength of the draft class.

Avs have their top 5 defensemen back in the lineup. They could use another depth guy, but I doubt they give up major assets for a D. Picks & prospects with significant value should go to finding a 2C solution.

If I’m not mistaken, Colorado’s offer was for 4 years so that he and MacKinnon would expire at the same time. So this would be the last year on his deal.

Definitely understandable. Colorado is pretty thin on mid-round picks. They could add a later round pick to Kaut, or possibly upgrade the prospect. I don’t think Olausson or Behrens would be on the table for potentially a rental. Sampo Ranta, Jean-Luc Foudy, or Nikolai Kovalenko could be prospect options for a player of Suter’s caliber.

I think I’d prefer Rodrigues over Stastny, but same general concept. Overall I like the idea of keeping the rest of the roster as in-tact as possible, and bringing in a middle-six C that fits under the cap without the Avs moving out major pieces. Stastny, Rodrigues; it looks like Necas is staying in Carolina but he would be an interesting option if available; they could squeeze Dvorak under the cap if they only carried 21 for the first few weeks of the season. Not to mention, you have a player who I think the org believes can be that 2C in time, with Alex Newhook.
As good as Kadri was for the Avs, I think it’s going to cause more long-term problems to trade a guy like Girard in order to sign an aging Nazem Kadri to a longer term deal.

Definitely agree about Meyers. I’m curious about Sedlak. He’s familiar with Bednar from the Columbus organization, he spent his last 3 seasons in North America in the NHL, and he’s coming off 3 really productive seasons in the KHL. I think he’ll probably end up in the Keifer Sherwood swing forward role, but I’m interested to see how much opportunity he gets in the preseason.

I don’t hate this. Obviously there’s a some risk here for Colorado. But Sean Monahan has been a really productive player in his career, who’s coming off a terrible year. A lot of that was injury driven, which is concerning for his future health but encouraging that his game didn’t just completely fall apart. Colorado has enough cap space to fit him in without moving money out. Worst case, he doesn’t bounce back from his injuries and they dump his money mid-season or ride out the one year of his contract. Best case, he returns to form as a 55-60 point guy. More than likely he’s somewhere in the middle.

Cap Hell 20222023
I think this general concept is probably what they do. Of their big three UFAs, it sounds like their closest to extending Nichushkin. I don’t see how they can fit Kadri, and rather than extending Burakovsky I think it makes more sense to spend on a replacement 2C. Trocheck would be a good fit.
On the back end, I’m wondering if they try to keep Jack Johnson or Ryan Murray, rather than spending a little more on a guy they’re less familiar with. MacDermid is also a serviceable option as a rotational bottom-pair D, and I’m curious to see how much opportunity they give Danila Zhuravlyov.
The one wrinkle I could see is extending Manson and then trading Girard for a younger, more long-term solution at 2C. Marty Necas’s name is out there, or a player of comparable age, skill, and upside. I’m not necessarily advocating for that plan, but I think it’s a possibility.

I think Lehkonen is right on. Age/statistical/role comps would be Beauvillier and Iafallo, who both signed last offseason at right around 4x$4M. Maybe Lehkonen gets a little more since he’s having a nice playoff.
Nichushkin might come in a little lower if he stays in Colorado, maybe in the $4.75M-$5.25M range. But I bet that’s pretty close to what he could get in the open market, if not more.

I have a suspicion that they'll be looking to offload EJ's contract after this season and do everything necessary to re-sign Manson. They kind of have to after trading away their entire RHD depth.</div></div>
Even if they bought out EJ, it’s $2M against the cap for 2 years. Not ideal, but that extra $4M could go a long way. Or they could trade him with retained salary for the last year of his deal if needed. Or maybe he’s suddenly allergic to his equipment or something…

I think these are pretty efficient deals. Like other have said, adding good middle six pieces without giving up too much. If this is how it went down, my only criticism would be that they didn’t get heavier in the middle of the lineup. A guy like Copp or even Domi would bring some snarl without sacrificing much skill. Those guys are probably going to cost a bit more though.

Here’s my tin foil hat theory - a couple of writers/insiders said they don’t think Colorado is done and suggested they are still around Giroux. I think it was NRD a couple weeks ago who said he believes Fletcher will line up offers he likes from a few teams, then go to Giroux after his 1000th game (this Thursday) with the options. Helleson was rumored to be a guy Philly may be interested in, and the 2023 2nd round pick is a somewhat valuable asset. My theory is that Sakic and Fletcher have a deal already worked out for Giroux, and Sakic was comfortable pulling the trigger on Manson because Helleson + ‘23 2nd are NOT involved in the Giroux package. Will Giroux choose to go to Colorado? Who knows.
