Corey Masiak Article
I quite like Masisak and really miss him as the Devils beat writer at the Athletic, but 4 out of the 5 packages he suggested in his article today is completely out of touch with reality and the last one (package 5) being a almost unprecedented overpayment, though not as completely bonkers as the first 4.
Masisak (and many fans of any given team looking to sell star wingers) seem to think that deals are created in a vacuum, but they aren't.
Therein lies the single biggest issue with the article, the complete omittance of comparables.
If Masisak thinks these packages are realistic, then why didn't DeBrincat get Batherson + a 1st rd pick + Ridley Greig for example?
Then there is zero discussion on how Meier's ability to pick his next destination (as they'd have to negotiate extension with Meier) limits the number of buyers and thus diminishes the trade value.
Zero discussion on how his QO being higher than his market value gives Meier an egregious amount of leverage against the team he will negotiate against, be it the Sharks or some other.
Masisak seem to think that teams are trading for Matthew Tkachuk in Timo Meier, but they really aren't.
Tkachuk is a top 10 player in the league, Meier might be top 50.
Tkachuk was 24 at the time he was traded, Meier will be 26 if he is traded.
Tkachuk's QO at 9m was way below his market value, Meier's 10m QO is above his market value.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sharcuda22</b></div><div>source: "trust me bro", that being said this seems fairish, would probably guess if the sharks are getting mercer then its a 2024 pick.
Plus Corey knows much much more about the devils than I ever will lol</div></div>
“Trust me bro” is essentially what Corey wrote though lol
If Mercer is moved, I just doubt there’s much significance alongside him, given the value of an ELC plus having full RFA years
I also wasn’t a fan of Corey wrapping full retention in there, when the cap moved with AJ is all they need to fit Meier and ice a full roster. Seemed like a waste of a retention slot for SJ in order to drive up value for the article’s sake

Meier trade before all star break and rest of TDL
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Slimycoldcutswork</b></div><div>I think the goal would be to not play him over Smith. If you make a deep cup run, you probably need extra defensemen. If he needs to play a few games, his job will be to come over the boards and hold it together in his own end. If lindy has the confidence in him to play that role with some degree of competence his real contribution is as a body that gives lindy the flexibility to keep the top 4 a bit more fresh and have some deployment flexibility. I dont really care if hes a net negative offensively.
Hes been fine defensively at even strength. Almost all of the blues have been bad short handed. Doubt he would be deployed on special teams very much anyway. The RAPM and xGAR suggest he would be an upgrade over Bahl in that context. The analytics agree with you when it comes to Okhotiuk though. What the rates arent really showing is that lindy doesnt seem to trust either of them. That seems to be changing a bit with Okhotiuk, but hes still very inexperienced. There seems to be a very short leash with Bahl. As soon as he looks a little shaky, or a close game wanes late into the 3rd lindy turns Bahl into a grocery stick, and starts double shifting guys like smith graves and seigs in defensive starts. I was at the game last night and I legit watched him sit in the exact same spot on the bench for what seemed like most of the 3rd period. Could give some context to why his rates are somewhat promising.</div></div>
I think this period in the Devils current juncture is very unique.
With Marino still injured, the Devils rather comfortably to make the playoffs and have the three of Bahl, Okhotiuk and Walsh losing their waiver exemption for 23/24 there is no better opportunity to get Bahl and Okhotiuk some really important reps in and more experience.
There's an opportunity here to permanently push this Devils core past the idea of ever 'trading for an extra, gritty bottom pairing defenceman' again.
That's why it'd be such a monumental waste to throw in the towel and burn a pick for Mikkola when there really is no need for it.
Okhotiuk and Bahl are somewhat inexperienced now, yes, but there's no reason for both of them to still be that come the playoffs.
Anyway, I don't have access to RAPM so thanks for that insight, but according to GS and GSVA Bahl and Okhotiuk blow Mikkola out of the water as is, and you'd think that'd exacerbate further by letting them get more experience in over the course of the season, say nothing of how aging curves work.

Slafkovsky might be as good as Nylander, might be better. The important thing is he will be on an ELC for three years then likely an affordable bridge deal while Nylander is making near 7 mil already. Several items to consider there.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PrimeDatsyuk</b></div><div>a depth D at best doesn't get a second, and no it wasn't a pretty square deal.
you want two of the leafs top three prospects for a back ups goalie, a depth d, a UFA at the end of the season who's having a bad year, and some 3 line grinder? that's laughable.</div></div>
A 25g per year sniper, a highly sought after young winger and a solid defensive d-man... it’s a pretty fair deal.
Besides, prices determined by seller.
If you don’t like, that’s cool.
Carry on.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Skyraider112</b></div><div>That is not even close! Palmieri will probably fetch a 1st and maybe a B prospect. Wood is worth the equivalent of a late 1st/early 2nd, Wedgewood and Kulikov have minimal value (maybe a 7th for Wedgesalad and a 6th for Brokeback Kulikov). Toronto would be foolish to trade either Amirov or Sandin at all, let alone for a UFA who will walk, a 3rd line winger, and 2 depth pieces</div></div>
Wood and Kulikov get far more. Wood gets more than Palmieri. And Kulikov gets 2nd.
It was actually pretty square deal.
