lol thanks for your candor
How is it cap hell? Three contracts: one for one year; one for two; one for three. All three could likely be re-signed, if desired, for a lesser AAV.
Now, I agree I may be miscalculating how much of the Oilers future to throw at this deal, but I can't shake the idea that there is a good deal for both sides here somewhere.

I like this. I didn't realize Garland was trending well enough for a 5M contract but I haven't seen many Coyotes games recently.
You've left some cap space for Nurse and JP next year which almost no one does here.

I'm sure Neal is a nice guy who is kind to children and animals but he's a slow liability on the ice.

Good. If you think Oilers decline this, perhaps it can be done for less.
Just because TB needs to clear cap space doesn't mean there won't be other GMs trying to snatch Killorn, Palat, or Gourde. There will be competition.
With all respect, saying Johnson's contract is worse than Neal's is just nonsense. After Jeff Skinner, Neal's is probably the worst in the league.

I don't know about just Lavoie; I'd expect there'd be at least a few other GMs that would offer more.
I started off with Archibald and Lagesson rather than McLeod and Jones. Maybe that's better. This does gut a lot of the Oilers futures.

Yeah, the clauses are a likely snag.
Johnson is not an objectively bad player, he's just on a bad contract (unlike, say Neal who has virtually no value now).
I'm willing to take Johnson if it also gets us Killorn and Palat. Reduces the number of UFAs KH has to chase. And the TBL forwards bring a culture of winning with them.

If Kassian gets his game back with any consistency that's four nice lines to roll.

Pittsburgh Talk to Me
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>uphere</b></div><div>Dumping Kassian's contract probably isn't a priority for the Oilers, but they would probably be happy to move him if the right deal comes along.
I think Uncle Kenny has Yamamoto's qualifying offer ready and that he has an idea of what it is going to cost him to sign Larson, Barrie, RNH, and maybe even re-up Nurse. I believe he is developing his strategy for the offseason based on that knowledge (I'm not convinced RNH and Barrie will be back). Surely Holland has his protection list close to complete, although negotiations with his key UFAs are probably leaving the last couple of spots unconfirmed right now. Undoubtedly, he's talking with other GMs now and getting a feel for how the trade market is going to look ahead of the expansion draft.
The Oilers are probably looking for a better goaltender, ideally before the buyout window opens. If this effort is successful, Holland has the option of selling low on Koskinen or buying him out, at the expense of risking the loss of Stuart Skinner to the Kraken. I think Seattle may have other very attractive options to pick from though.
Kassian will probably be left exposed during the expansion draft, and I believe RNH and Larsson will influence on whether Seattle picks him. If RNH remains a free agent, the Oilers may protect one of Archibald, Kahun, or Khaira. If Larsson remains a free agent, the Oilers may protect Jones. The Kraken may prefer Kassian over Lagesson, Russell, one of the other Oiler forwards, an Oiler goaltender, taking a risk on Klefbom, or a risk in selecting an Oiler free agent (they can always tender an offer when the free agent window opens). If the Kraken pick Kassian, then so be it. If they don't then I'm sure Holland will remain open to listening to reasonable offers. The only scenario in which I see a cap dump occurring is if Edmonton overextends itself with UFAs, or needs to clear space in order to swing a trade for a significant asset.</div></div>
Yeah, I believe negotiations have already begun on re-signing Larsson. Which probably means "no" for Barrie who wants term. Who knows about RNH but he had a statistically poor year so maybe the Oilers can sign him for say, 5.5MM x 4-5 years which I think is fair-to-good value.
The Oilers value Kassian more than I or most AGMs do. I'd do a happy dance if the Kraken selected him.

Pittsburgh Talk to Me
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Pensfan89</b></div><div>I don’t think there is a fit unless Edmonton gives up quite a bit. I mean pens would have to send a contract back like Zucker so they can not only take on Kassian full cap hit, but also sign Kahun to make the deal worth it. Which means the pens would definitely want at least a 1st rounder added on to the deal. Zucker isn’t as bad as fans claim he is. Malkin started the year extremely out of shape and brought everyone that ended up on his line down. Zucker picked it up just before his injury and after he came back. He was simply snake bitten. But the offensive pressure was definitely there. He was one forward that laid it all out on the line and showed a ton of heart in the playoffs. I think he’d be a good addition to Edmonton’s speed game and would do wonders on McDavid’s LW. Being with Malkin who doesn’t play as much of a north/south speed game I think had a lot to do with Zuckers production too. When he first came over and was on a line with Crosby, he was almost a PPG player. He is also a good locker room guy and leader.</div></div>
That was a lot of interesting and useful information. Thank you, it is appreciated.

That's only assuming we were goin\g to trade for Seth as you suggest and feel it's beneficial to have the brothers together. If not, then I agree - no need to toss Seattle anything in that situation.

I'm a little nervous about Zucker re. term and the possibility that he's about to fall off the cliff production-wise.
But there's risk on both sides - I wonder if Zucker for Kassian + Kahun works.

If we're going to trade for Seth Jones (Columbus will need a bit more, BTW) why not keep his little brother? I'm sure he'd be a great mentor. And it's a pretty cool situation, too: I don't believe two African-American brothers have ever played for the same NHL team before.
Toss Seattle a late round pick to take Benson or Lagesson.

I like the way you've assembled the top 9.
I agree with Martinez as the Klefbom replacement target and the amount looks right.
I wouldn't bother with Haas at all, let alone for 2.0 MM. I'm sure there are better options cheaper: Khaira and Holloway come to mind.
Good cap management for now, but the season after... yikes.

I'd live in this dream. This is one of the better configurations I've seen. You need another roster player to get to 23, but you can probably shave money off a few contracts. Between Hall, Nuge, and Yama I think you could save about 2.5MM. Not enough to pay Nurse and Puljujarvi the next year, but still a nice dream.

Broken Social Scene
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dpellz90</b></div><div>Pens aren't trading McCann and DeSmith for scraps</div></div>
Oiler AGMs have been pushing Kassian for actual scraps a lot - I thought I was being a bit more realistic:
1. $450,000 retained means he's $2.75 MM which is at least a bit more palatable. If you think Kassian has actual negative value as a player then I agree, this trade couldn't happen. Kass has shown flashes of very effective play. It's a bit of a gamble to be sure.
2. Kahun is no big deal but is a legit bottom six guy. He's only here because I read somewhere that Gino likes playing with him.
3. Samorukov is trending very nicely as a shutdown D prospect that will be NHL ready very soon.
4. Pens have no 1st, 3rd, or 4th round picks. Now they have a 3rd.
Are these things truly worthless? If not, what are they worth? DeSmith only? McCann only? Jason Zucker?

The idea was to sign RNH and then trade.
The Jones thing depends on motivation. Ken Holland talks to Caleb who talks to Seth. If Seth really is determined to leave, that's that. If not, it's an intriguing idea, no? Might even be an interesting marketing point for Columbus. Have two African-American brothers ever played for the same NHL team before?
