One last thing
Basically the same thing as the team I just made (<a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1010634">https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1010634</a>) although I don't really see Rust going anywhere, and Carolina would definitely need a pick to agree to this deal.

My guess would be that they intend to flip Brassard. Regardless, it looks like they're waving the white flag on next season.

Realistic Barzal Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>joshelkin</b></div><div>IMO the Pens don't even have the RIGHT assets for Barzal. It would have to be absolutely ridiculous. But to suggest Guentzel is your main piece is a non-starter right there. Someone like Eichel/Keller/Pettersson gets a true conversation going</div></div>
Honestly, you're right. Crosby and Malkin are untouchable so the main piece <em>has</em> to be Guentzel. I wasn't really expecting the majority of the response to be from non-Pens fans, though. Since our fanbase is obsessed with Barzal ATM I just wanted to point out that any trade for him would absolutely gut the roster, regardless of whether it's realistic or not.

I'll create a team that has an alien, george washington and jesus christ on the sabres and then tell everyone who comments that it wouldn't really be worth it and to read the description.</div></div>
I literally never said Barzal on the Pens would end well. My only point (which you've entirely missed) is that the Penguins are better with their current roster than they would be with Barzal minus everyone included in the trade.

The trade was never meant to be close, it's just a starting point to negotiations. Think about the package you would need to send him to Pittsburgh. That would cripple the Pens, would it not?

There is a better chance of me winning the Powerball then there is of the Isles trading Barzal to the Penguins. Lol.</div></div>
And that's the only point I'm really trying to make. As nice as it would be to add a player like Barzal, everything they'd have to subtract to acquire him is just too much for one player to offset.

Well, obviously. The Pens would have to absolutely overpay to get him. My entire point is that it wouldn't be worth it.

There is no incentive to move him. To give them one you’d have to ridiculously overpay. What is the going rate for a 21 year old franchise player with another year still left on his ELC? Take that and multiply it by 2 and maybe you get them to the table. Maybe.</div></div>
You're halfway there. Now, would that ridiculous overpayment really be worth it for the Penguins? Think about it, they would have the most top-heavy team in the NHL and nobody to fall back on besides Barzal when Crosby and Malkin regress. I doubt that group would be successful long-term. Maybe they could win a cup now, but that's something they can already do with their current roster.

The trade itself isn't really that important. Malkin isn't getting traded, so Guentzel would probably be the centerpiece of any package for Barzal. With all the assets the Penguins would have to give up, is it really worth it when you already have a player producing similar numbers?

Well, that's not the point of this thread. This is a direct response to all the whacky Barzal trades Pens fans have come up with. Obviously, it wouldn't be a straight up trade, but the centerpiece of the package would have to be Guentzel. My point is that it wouldn't be a trade worth making for the Penguins.

Pens Dream
I know this is more or less a pipe dream, but if the Islanders trade Barzal to the Pens they're gonna want Guentzel in return. If you compare the two players stats, they're pretty similar.
Guentzel: 47 points, 24 goals, 8.1 relative Corsi, and 54.8 FF%
Barzal: 45 points, 14 goals, 7.1 relative Corsi, and 53.0 FF%
The only major difference is the goals total, which is a given since Jake has Crosby creating opportunities for him. While Barzal played really well with Crosby last night, if you put Guentzel in that 3-on-3 tournament you'd get the same results.

Penguins Trade Deadline 2019
That condition doesn't work. Free agency is after the draft, so Brassard likely would resign after that pick is used. Remove that pick and make the third in 2020 going to Dallas on the condition that Brassard <em>doesn't</em> resign, then it'll work.

While you're absolutely correct, that doesn't change the fact that he's overhyped. This trade is proof of that. Frankly, there are better players available with more experience to help them win now.

Overpaying for Ferland. Jarry and the second rounder will probably get this deal done. Not to mention that the Hurricanes wouldn't be interested in adding another defenseman.

BIG Trade with Winnipeg and Carolina for Cup Run
The condition to the Carolina trade doesn't make any sense. The draft is before free agency, so the Hurricanes will have already used the 2019 2nd round pick before Ferland signs a new contract.

Brassard and More Moves
Carolina passes on this deal. They've been looking to acquire forwards all season and while Brassard would be an upgrade over Rask, he's merely a rental. As for Maatta, he doesn't really fit into their long-term plans. If you look at their current defense, everyone is under team control for at least another season. With Slavin, De Haan and Fleury on the left side Maatta probably wouldn't see top-four minutes with the Hurricanes.
