New GM Incoming
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MG1986</b></div><div>There is every reason. He's a terrible negotiator, he is uses flawed analytical data to make hockey trades. While I agree it may have been time for Kadri to go, neither Kerfoot nor Barrie did much of anything this season, and Barrie was virtually invisible in the qualifier. Don't even get me started on Marleau. Dubas backed himself into a tight cap corner with his awful negotiating skills. He could have used saved at least 3 million dollars, if not, on those Matthews and Marner extensions.</div></div>
Just putting this out there but did you know during the regular season Kadri and Kerfoot had the same amount of 5 on 5 points?

We might have just given Carolina 13OA for a Cap Dump
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafs_and_Sens_Fan</b></div><div>Okay he played hardball with Nylander and got Nylander on a reasonable contract. I have absolutely no problem with that and I never did.
Anaheim did the same thing with Rackell.
I would have done the same thing with Marner except I would have let him sit the whole season if I had to.</div></div>
I said this earlier but what if ownership didn’t let that happen?

New GM Incoming
So they’re going to fire their GM after 2 years? Both in which he had to clean up Lou’s mess with Marleau and Zaitsev.. The leafs gave Burke 5 years and JFJ 5 years.. but let’s can this guy after 2...let’s also talk about how the leafs have had a new coach and let’s try to give him more than half a season before we make a judgment call there.. last thing.. why doesn’t anyone talk about how bad a job Mark Hunter did drafting in 2016 and 2017?

That contract brought his trade value right down. That's how you know it is a bad contract.</div></div>
Just throwing this out there..you do realize ownership may have had a hand in the contract negotiations for Marner? MLSE was recently coming off the loss of Kawhi who they would have offered the world to. Could you imagine if they lost a second money driver for them on a different team?

Marner 5yr-10M

Why would they give him a 4 year deal and walk him straight to free agency? That would be the worst possible scenario.

This is just an experiment
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Random2152</b></div><div>Here is Marner VS Kane just for easy comparison btw:
GPG/PPG - all are years before 2nd contract
Marner----- 0.25/0.79 - 0.27/0.84 - 0.32/1.15
Kane--------- 0.26/0.88 - 0.31/0.88 - 0.37/1.07
And Matthews for comparison
Matthews-- 0.49/0.84 - 0.55/1.02 - 0.54/1.07</div></div>
In my opinion you can’t go off one season as a way to value a player, especially with the two jumps that I had mentioned (scoring was higher last season compared to previous and the Tavares factor). The thing with Matthews is that I value goals higher than assists, I would also recommend using a per/60 method as opposed to per game.
There are also underlying numbers that would need to factor into an extension.

Just jumping in...
Matthews since coming in the league has no comparable players. He's arguably the best 5v5 goal scorer in the league, which is what most hockey are spent at. The five years of his contact are buying possibly the best scoring years of his career.
Marner has a very close comparable in Patrick Kane, in which I would even say Kane had a better first three seasons in the league. When Kane signed his five year deal, it was worth 11.09% of the cap. If Marner signed for this same percentage it would roughly be $9M on a five year deal. Two things to take into consideration is that goal scoring was up last season and he played with Tavares, who has made a career out getting his wingers paid.

I wanted to try and be as realistic as possible. I think they can too, it was just hard trying to find a team that would use Andersen and because of that it could lower is value. I wasn't a fan of Poirier when he was first drafted, but now I think he's a good prospect.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dullard</b></div><div><i>That's a lot of cap space. Nearly $29M discounting Pronger.</i></div></div>
That's because the team can't and won't spend the entire cap. They also have a lot of minor league/entry level contracts.
