Canes Shock Some By Keeping Pesce and Turbo Instead of Guentzel
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>Is the thinking in Carolina that Guentzel is more likely to extend than Pesce? I would have guessed other way around.</div></div>
It's likely the case, yes, but IMO it depends on how they do against the Rangers. If they fail to get past them, I think it's more likely that they keep Guentzel to shake up the forward group some long-term.

5 years is relatively mild for a UFA contract of a RHD of this caliber. Of course his play is likely to decline, but the reason you pay is to get at least 3 good seasons out of him.

And again - lots of teams have lots of cap space next year; only difference is one of the teams changed cities, I guess.</div></div>
The difference is that nearly every other team that has the kind of cap space that Utah has is still in that rebuilding phase, while this new Utah team wants to transition out of it.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MitchJr</b></div><div>Man City comparison makes no sense. Not sure you know anything about the EPL but there is no salary cap; completely different animal. All teams in the nhl can spend to the same amount as Utah and lots of teams will have lots of cap space</div></div>
I know there's a difference and I'm relatively familiar with the EPL. My point is that Utah is sitting on an absurd amount of cap space and draft capital because of the destitute prior ownership. They're primed to make a Man City-esque roster explosion, by NHL standards.

If the Leafs once again go barren league-minimum salaries for their bottom-6 and pairs, maybe I could see the Leafs doing it. I can't think of other contenders using cap space in such a manner unless the Utah ownership becomes the new Manchester City and just starts buying players to become a contender.

I'm sure he will, but the key, at least IMO, is from what kind of quality of a team and roster. My contract is similar to the rumored extension offer this offseason from Carolina.

Dallas also got much better with him on board. It might've just been a John Hynes issue in Nashville. Duchene also wouldn't be part of the leadership structure here.

Anybody is good at 1M, let's be real. This contract was more in the Orlov vein. Duchene would maybe get 5M/year on a 4 year contract.

Another Necas for RHD Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>littlejerryseinfeld</b></div><div>Canes fans will tell you how good necas is (in trades) and then argue how he's not worth that much (if they sign him)</div></div>
If I'm being honest, he's worth a lot in signing (around the Tippett rate) and trade. The Canes just have to be judicious about where to allocate cap next year considering the pending departures and retaining Guentzel+Jarvis. It's tough to pay Necas at the purest market value and not take a significant hit on defense. This trade solves that issue.

Moving up
Probably, if I'm being realistic, the asking price for Necas would be Mailloux, even if Carolina has to add to make it happen. A quality RHD with defensive capabilities that can replace Pesce long-term is something the Canes need to prioritize.

Keeping Necas-Jarvis-Guentzel Long-Term
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Campabee</b></div><div>No, he has played enough pro seasons to become a FA at the end of 2024-25. 1 year in the AHL + 5 NHL makes 6 so far, at the end of 2024-25 he will have played 7 pro seasons making him a UFA at age 26. The rule states 7 pro seasons <strong>or</strong> age 27 whichever comes first.
Edit***
What is a Group 6 UFA?
A player whose contract is expiring and meets all of the following conditions will become an unrestricted free agent (UFA):
The player is 25 years or older (as of June 30th of the calendar year the contract is expiring).
The player has completed 3 or more professional seasons - qualified by 11 or more professional games (for an 18/19 year old player), or 1 or more professional games (for a player aged 20 or older).
This can include NHL, minor league, and European professional league seasons played while under an SPC.The player has played less than 80 NHL games, or 28 NHL games of 30 minutes or greater for a goaltender.</div></div>
IIRC, there is a rule where Necas could play in the AHL and not have it count as a pro season. I think it actually was a slide year.

My comparison point on AAV was actually Teravainen. They are very comparable players from a production and positional standpoint at the time when Teravainen's extension was penned.

Brodie is #2 in TOI for the Leafs at 21:44 per game. Brent Burns, our #1 TOI guy, only plays 21:39 a night. Reducing Brodie's workload to 20:17 a night (Pesce's current TOI, and our current #4) could increase his effectiveness. Brodie likely would slot behind Burns, Slavin, and Orlov in terms of minutes/game in this scenario.

Look above for the explanation. I don't know if Necas has as much leverage as he did in the past considering the poor faceoff numbers (which moves him further away from NHL clubs potentially viewing him as a top-2 centerman), and the usual hot-and-cold offense.

I think the Canes would decline any Necas trade short of a for-sure top-4 RHD. Boqvist still has a ton of question marks.

Canes have Burns, Andersen, Orlov, and Kuznetsov coming off the books for Slavin's extension, and a Nikishin ELC coming in. They are just fine on that front, and even better off if Morrow surpasses expectations.

Brodie is a decent buy-low here. If Chatfield can't handle top-4 minutes, Brodie can be a solid #4 in terms of TOI.

Severson received a 3rd from Columbus, I believe. I think Skjei+Pesce+Teravainen is worth something like 2nd+3rd+Pick Swap, especially if Utah wants to add the 8th year for cap purposes. Maybe it should be Florida's 2nd, but I don't think the value is that far off.

It's possible that Vegas extends Mantha short-to-medium term instead of Marchessault. They like cycling their stars a bit in order to give them solid team depth.
