bring him back

Let's be real man, he's only looked like a Norris level defenseman for what, 20 games since he signed that contract? Yes, he is an amazing player when he is fully healthy, but he's got a lot of mileage on that body, he isn't getting any younger, and there's a lot of term left on that deal at 11.5 mil per year.
Based on his injury history, I'd take the deal to get out from under that contract and run with it.

The whole point of moving Anderson would be to make cap space. You can’t make both moves on defense without it

The Marleau trade happened because of the buyout.</div></div>
What you play the canes 3 times vs twice for a team in the west. I don’t really think where you trade him matters in the slightest I think he will go wherever the best return is. I get not trading in the division but within the conference for a player like Anderson is probably a stretch

Jones Out - Playoff roster
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Salzy</b></div><div>Lets be real, the Ducks have enough mid six wingers, and Bracco would be blocked the same way he is in TOR
We need top 6 forwards and RD, we arent adding either here but losing one
We're set at LD goalie and bottom nine forwards
You saying we need everything shows you're lack of knowledge on the ducks
If Manson gets moved its for a better return than this that actually fills needs we have</div></div>
I never said the return was enough, but really the Ducks do not have a bunch of Middle Forwards - Ritchie, Kase, Shore, Deslauriers are all bottom 6 and most have 4th line production.
Max Jones is middle 6 with top 6 potential
Rackell and Silfverberg are top 6
Rowney - bottom
Terry - bottom
Grant - bottom
To be real Ducks have a bunch of Bottom 6 F and 80% of them are 4 the liners
They have 2 wingers with middle 6 potential
Kapenen is a massive upgrade in the Ducks Forward group

Realistic - several trades
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HockeyDad81</b></div><div>Marner doesn't sign for less than 11.25 per yr.</div></div>
I disagree - I think it takes an offer sheet for him to get north of $11M, and I don't see that happening. I don't see a team willing to give up four 1st's and an $11M+ contract to get him.

Obtaining Pesce
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Zanerax</b></div><div>You would think the fact that no Canes fan has them trading Peace would indicate something.
Go after Faulk or Hamilton instead.</div></div>
Canes fans think all of their defenceman are all stars and are worth the other teams top young players. They are also looking like they will miss the playoffs for the 10th straight year. Not saying this trade is perfect but Pesce is a 2nd pair defenceman who in certain situations can play top pair minutes (if he has a true #1 to play with). Faulk is another 2nd pair guy. Hamilton should be a top pair guy but he's currently being used as the #3 right handed defenceman. So if we look it from the standpoint of which team has greater need, who do you think would pay more for an upgrade. The current 2nd place team in the Eastern Conference who is top 10 league wide defensively, or the team that is 9th in the East, has missed the playoffs for 9 straight years and has a clear need for scoring which is what is preventing them from being in a playoff position. Carolina is not in a position of strength in negotiating a deal with the Leafs.
Carolina should trade one of their defenceman, possibly 2 of their defenceman if they can get some better scoring help. What they can't afford to do is demand way too much for their players, miss out and then miss the playoffs. TO on the otherhand? They can roll the dice with what they have.

Checking the cap out at 85 mil
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BCAPP</b></div><div>You are suggesting Kapanen gets 2.5-3 million and calling 3.1 mil an over pay?
If I'm Kapanen and the Leafs are offering me under 3 for a few years im looking hard at offer sheets. If I'm other teams I'm strongly considering offersheetinf the guy. 4 million for 4 years will get you him through his prime. If trying to replicate at a UFA you'll pay that for a 2nd-3rd line winger at about 29-33. In other words past his prime. It'll cost you a second. The Leafs can't match.
I would try to give him a one year bridge and resign him next year when Marleau's contracts is off the books</div></div>
Smh. No, I said $3.1M for a 1 year deal is an overpayment. He hasn't shown that he can consistently play at the level he's been playing at, he tends to be a very streaky player. As I said, he also doesn't even have 50 career points.
A very real and logical comparison is Connor Brown's contract. Both were up and down from the AHL before finally making the team full time in their last year of their ELC. Brown had 89GP with 21G and 22A for 0.48PPG. As of right now, Kapanen has 108GP with 23G and 18A for 0.38PPG. Both are responsible defensively and see a lot of PK time and some but not a whole lot of PP time. Brown signed a 3year/$6.3M deal, so $2.1M per season which was a cap hit percentage of 2.8% at the time of the signing. So Kapanen at 2.8% of the projected $83M is $2.324M per year. Brown was about 23 years old when he signed, Kapanen is 22 right now. So a 2-3 year deal for Kapanen would end when he was 25, making both players still RFA's at the end of their deals. So if you wanna make a case for Kapanen that's where your reference points come in. I'd argue that Kapanen has more offensive upside to his game yes with hia superior speed, but that's just potential. He has to prove it. So you could add a bit more to the $2.324M comparison for that.
My educated prediction based on comparisons, Kapanen signs with Toronto for roughly $2.8M for 3 years. None of those years by out UFA years so it won't come at an obscene cost.
So yes, $3.1M for 1 year is an overpayment when they can get him cheaper for longer. & no team is going to offer him $4M for 4 seasons because that's atrocious. If they do, it's only to put Toronto in a tight spot and not because they think it's worth it. Kapanen is a secondary player on any team. He's not the type you build around so you don't commit to him long term right now. You bridge deal him to see if he can consistently improve to what he has been playing like.

Replace Bracco with the 2nd you get in the Oilers trade and then its a deal.
Matthews deal seems right for 5 years. Marner at that amount is likely 5-6 years not 8 years, but this is good to show where they will be next year.
2020/2021 will be nice when Marleau comes off the books.

Matching fat offer sheets
According to non Leaf fans on capfriendly there are only RFA's in TO. All other players hitting RFA have zero chance of getting offer sheets but everyone will offer TO's RFA's huge contracts. Colorado has Rantanen, he definitely won't get an offer sheet. Laine and Connor in Winnipeg? No chance. Marner and Matthews? 100%

Off Season blockbuster
I like it! Sure the value may be slightly off and need to readjusted but this makes Toronto a much more balanced team, keep Marner and Nylander, bring in WAY better defense than they had and it was all done with players that have solid contracts! It's definitely something to think about for them. It also doesn't add the pressure of offer sheets and draft picks in the offseason. They'd be making the decision ahead of time and bringing in a king's ransom as a return, and it's of their choosing.

You got the contracts right which is nice to see. Oilers may do it without the two 3rds but the other one likely qont happen even though the values are good
