Weaponize that cap space
I'd do that. I would suggest you not wanting Yzerman to resign though. Maybe he can be your assistant

Draft Day 2019 Trading Down
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChiHawk</b></div><div>Wings are young, they just need to develop all their prospects and adding Byram would be huge. The guy is a top 7 pick in most draft years which says a lot. He should be a 1st liner able to carry a team in another 5 years; if the hawks didn't grab Boqvist last year, I'd be all over Byram. Bryam is better then Boqvist at the same age.</div></div>
You're assuming Byram is still available after LA picks...

First Timer
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wojo</b></div><div>With how well Larkin, AA, Hronek, Hirose, Bert, and Bowey have looked the last couple weeks, this could realistically be a playoff WC or 3rd seed atlantic team next year. But that begs the question of whether this core of players could end up competing for a stanley cup in 2-3 years afterwards. I personally think buying this offseason would be a mistake.
Byram would be a good pick if we fall to 5 or 6, but we also would be better off with a potential 30-40 goal scorer in Podkolzin or Kaako, so hopefully we are lucky in the lottery. Cholo, Byrum, DDK, Hronek, Bowey, Myers would be a solid d-core in 2-3 years, but again, I don't know if adding Skinner (who I think is overrated and not worth that much), fixes the forward core enough to give him that money for that term. We won't need to sign him for that contract if we get a 2nd or 3rd pick. The Myers signing would be great for our future on defense though, as long as we can move Daley and/or Big E like you suggested.</div></div>

I’m with you in that I really hope we can land 1-3 and grab another top tier talent. But this was my scenario if we fall in the draft and don’t get that legitimate scoring threat.
I think the key thought here was that if they can land a Myers and add scoring (could be Duchene, Skinner, Hayes) or wait until the following year to add that scoring. They will still have the cap space to pursue another D man in 2020 via free agency and hopefully hit a stud in the draft in the next 2 years.
Ultimately, I think in 2 more years the cap space is there and if they draft well this team will have a lot of young talent and opportunity to address weaknesses via free agency.

And I'm totally fine with the moves Holland made. He moved who he needed to. Rental goalie market is always funky and the return for Howie probably wasn't enough to justify shipping him. I love that there were people screaming "wHy DoN'T ThEy TrAdE ERiCsOn" or abbie but NOBODY is taking on those guys with their contracts. So many fans of this franchise think its still 1997...

Yeah Detroit says no to that Howard Vanek deal, Howard @ 50% retention wont get moved for any thing less then a 2nd round pick. If Holland doesn't get his ask for Jimmy. We just keep him and resign him probably for 2 years $10 million or slightly more.

Anaheim blowup in to a Calgary cup
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wojo</b></div><div>Also that 3rd line would have the worst pay-to-performance ratio in the entire league xD</div></div>
I agree with everything your saying however this is a win now team. Getzlaf is on track for a 55-60 point season on a bottom of the league team which is fairly consistent with his past production. Perry has 5 games played this season so you can’t judge his play and Neal has been a massive disappointment in Calgary so signing two experience and still fairly talented guys to play with him is at least an attempt to get him going. I’ve done Other AGMs where I trade for hayes or other centres that could get Neal going. I was just trying to see if this one would work. You could even remove some of the picks and prospects and just pick up getzlaf for example and I think there would be less disagreeable people.
As for your evaluation of the prospects included mangi has proven that he can play a fourth line role. He will likely never be more than that
Lazar has been given a ton of chances in the NHL and has massively underperformed. He’s good in the AHL but he can’t transition it to NHL caliber hockey. Maybe after his recent stint in the AHL it will be a different story but he is also a RFA who is likely gonna be looking for a one way contract next season which may result in Calgary letting him go
Finally Dube was also given a chance.( not a good chance but atleast he was given one) it takes a special type of player to play in the NHL at Dubes size and in his time in the big leagues he was manhandled. Although he probably has the largest upside of the guys I included he is extremely unproven as of yet
This AGM sprouted from Carlyle being fired which in my opinion signifies the beginning of a full rebuild in Anaheim meaning they may be willing to take on salary to get rid of some of their old regulars so they can build around silverburg Rakel and montour
The contracts for next season would definetly need to be figured out with Gibson already signed at 6.2 and Tkachuk likely looking for 8+ but that is something that can be addressed in the offseason. Moving Neal for a 4th round pick would free up some cap as well you could deal Ryan so that the fourth line completely belongs to the rookies
My opinion is three strong lines and 3 top defensman is what makes a team so that’s where I build the AGM around

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wojo</b></div><div>I don't think shipping out basically all of LA's competitive players who aren't named Doughty or Kopitar is the solution to their problem. There is, in my observation, value in keeping a competitive culture through a rebuild. Look at Arizona, Edmonton, and even to a lesser extent, the Sabres. Their rebuilds have taken way too long because of a losing culture and poor management decisions. The King's need to be selling assets, but bottoming out like that usually stunts growth of young players.
On the flip side, trade Brown now if teams ask. His value only goes down in the next couple years while he's still under contract. He's close to hitting that mid 30s basement and will be at his 2015-16 numbers soon enough.</div></div>
My thinking of all of these trades was to add more prospects with speed and skill and getting more cap flexability. As I've heard plenty of times from NHL insiders is the Kings are willing to sell all becides Kopitar and Doughty. As far as Brown goes, I don't think he's tradable with the cap hit he has but if someone offers something I'm down Same with dion haha

Blockbuster with Calgary
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wojo</b></div><div>But the question is, does Calgary need one of those three to make a cup run? I was under the assumption they needed depth because they've already got an unstoppable 1st line and solid top 4 d-men. Maybe they can't give up that many assets, but is the essence of that trade (or a similar package) a smart move for the Flames?</div></div>
As a Flames fan I actually like this trade and agree with your point here.
Duchene, Panarin, or Stone are too big of a piece to integrate into this team given what this group has accomplished so far; we've come this far without players like that, so I'm not convinced this is the time to make a huge push for those kinds of players.
I think what's making it too pricey for me is Dube AND Mangiapane. Replace one with Bennett (who really just needs a change of scenery at this point) and I'm much more comfortable.
I'd also be very curious to see what a Nyquist-Jankowski-Neal line could accomplish and I'm a hell of a lot more comfortable with someone like Howard over Smith.

I think there are far cheaper depth D options. One who wouldn't have another year on their deal since they already have 1 year left of Stone to deal with. They don't have a lot in the cupboard for upcoming rookies and they haven't had a lot of 1st round draft picks the last number of years. I think you could get Nyquist for a 1st straight up.

Calgary kindly declines. Far too much to give up for 2 expiring UFA's and an overpaid aging D man. I like Nyquist and I like Howard as a back up option, but this is putting far too many future in 1 basket. If they are moving a package like this, it has to be for one of Stone, Panarin, Duchene.
