Blockbuster with Calgary

Created by: Wojo
Team: 2018-19 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 5, 2019
Published: Feb. 5, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Let me know what you guys think. Is this enough return for the Wings? Are the Flames giving up too many future assets?
Trades
DET
  1. Dubé, Dillon
  2. Mangiapane, Andrew
  3. Smith, Mike
  4. 2019 1st round pick (CGY)
  5. 2020 2nd round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
Flames could use a solid, two-way, 3rd-pairing d-man for depth come playoffs. They need a solid tendy, as Smith has been terrible and its doubtful Rittich's numbers stay where they are. Pair that with a guy in Nyquist who would fit perfectly into their middle six and dare I say you have a front-runner for the western conference.
CGY
  1. Daley, Trevor
  2. Howard, Jimmy
  3. Nyquist, Gustav
  4. 2019 4th round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
Wings are probably two years away from contending and could use some NHL-ready prospects. They have a logjam on D in the AHL and could benefit from an open spot, and moving Jensen is not going to get you enough in return. Nyquist needs to be moved this deadline and I think this deal brings in enough value for Howard.

Calgary kindly declines. Far too much to give up for 2 expiring UFA's and an overpaid aging D man. I like Nyquist and I like Howard as a back up option, but this is putting far too many future in 1 basket. If they are moving a package like this, it has to be for one of Stone, Panarin, Duchene.

But the question is, does Calgary need one of those three to make a cup run? I was under the assumption they needed depth because they've already got an unstoppable 1st line and solid top 4 d-men. Maybe they can't give up that many assets, but is the essence of that trade (or a similar package) a smart move for the Flames?

I think there are far cheaper depth D options. One who wouldn't have another year on their deal since they already have 1 year left of Stone to deal with. They don't have a lot in the cupboard for upcoming rookies and they haven't had a lot of 1st round draft picks the last number of years. I think you could get Nyquist for a 1st straight up.

As a Flames fan I actually like this trade and agree with your point here.

Duchene, Panarin, or Stone are too big of a piece to integrate into this team given what this group has accomplished so far; we've come this far without players like that, so I'm not convinced this is the time to make a huge push for those kinds of players.

I think what's making it too pricey for me is Dube AND Mangiapane. Replace one with Bennett (who really just needs a change of scenery at this point) and I'm much more comfortable.

I'd also be very curious to see what a Nyquist-Jankowski-Neal line could accomplish and I'm a hell of a lot more comfortable with someone like Howard over Smith.

I REALLY like this idea. Bennett could fit into the identity of speed and skill that the Wings are trying to move towards. A good move for the Wings that would have a low-risk and possible high reward. Nyquist could ignite that line to where they should be at in terms of scoring. A lot of people outside of Detroit really don't realize how solid he is as a defender as well as having great puck vision. And Calgary could resign him this summer because I think his skillset and high hockey IQ will age well.
