Chiarot is bad enough on the left, but you might be right.

I agree. I signed and traded for two right defensemen and signed a depth guy that can play both sides (and is from the area). I don't think any of these guys change what happens with Edvinsson. Gotta have depth. I think Cole would be a good fit, but maybe he's still too good for that role. If so, I would look for another similar option that can fill in on either side in the bottom pairing if needed, but that I wouldn't expect to block out a prospect who deserves it. Every year we end up playing a LOT of different guys on defense.

Modern Gretzky Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JhonnyCanuck5</b></div><div>Definitely wouldn’t be Seider. Maybe Raymond at best. But let’s almost consider the the difference between McDavid and 99(he’s great, but nobody is 99). Either way as the description said, this wasn’t a real offer. As great as McDavid is, if I’m Detroit, I don’t think I make this trade. Not in a cap world and giving up those picks.</div></div>
Really? If I'm Detroit, I make the trade. Only giving up one roster player, and he's always injured. We have a ton of depth at LD, so Wallinder is fine to include. After next summer all of the draft picks I've given up are in the past. In exchange I get the best player since Gretzky, and fill the biggest needs on my roster (1C and goal scoring). Done. I would say add a better 2RD or a legit 1LD (sorry Walman) in place of either the Tarasenko UFA signing or Konecny and this roster would be very competitive. It's just sad that we have to add McDavid while only giving up Fabbri from our roster for me to say that.

I love Samoskevich, but I don't think he will be able to go from healthy scratch in the playoffs to 2nd line winger on his off-side in a single offseason.

I think I would take this trade, even if it wasn't my first choice. We need an RD. We need defense that can spark offense, especially with Hronek gone. Again, not my first choice, but I would say this would be a decent plan B for Detroit depending on how free agency and any draft day trades go.

Combining ideas
On the whole, I like the group on offense. I would rather upgrade from Erne, and worry that Reaves is too old, though. Hill would probably be fine as a backup in goal. That defense won't make the playoffs, though. We have to do better than Gudas as an add on the right side for me to feel good about the offseason. Who's our #7 before Edvinsson returns. What are the pairings once he does return?

I don't think that Minnesota trade will go through.
Schenn is fine, but you don't sit $6.75M in cap hits, in Chiarot and Goligoski, that can play the right side when needed, in the press box to sign him.
I like Stolarz, but would want to sign a really good AHL starter.
I would be fine with the Nashville trade since the terms are short. I do worry that it might put us in bad shape next offseason with Johansen's big salary and Seider, Raymond, Rasumussen, etc. to pay. It limits our ability to sign replacements for Foligno, Perron, and Barrie. Would need some of Soderblom, Veleno, Mazur, 2023 first rounds picks to stick and contribute by then.

Why so many big contracts for Suter on here? Guy scored 24 points (just one more than Acciari who is taking 1.55M less and 3 fewer years in this scenario) and was just ok defensively. I'd like him back, but not at that kind of money and term.

I think Dumba would be a nice pick up, but he isn't the player he was 5-6 years ago anymore. Should do fine until Reinbacher is ready to step in, though, if that is indeed who we end up drafting. Mazur being the only new addition on offense means we will really struggle to score. I doubt McIsaac makes the opening night roster.

Missing Pieces
I don't mind Severson as a 2nd/3rd pair tweener, but I have the impression that he will cost more than this, and that he may not be worth what he costs. That being said, there aren't a lot of good RD candidates in the UFA pool, which could both make us more willing to pay him and limit our other options.

win now and sign pasta
Without Smith and Reilly I would consider this if Larkin wasn't going to be re-signed. I believe he will be re-signed. With Smith, Reilly, and retention you're asking the Wings to take on $8.2 in cap hit for this deal this year and $3,000,000 next year and the captain and leading scorer for Lysell, a 1st that isn't even this year, and a 2nd that is even further in the future. I think it is a moot point as Larkin will re-sign, but you have to at least remove Reilly before this deal begins to make sense.

These trades wouldn't feel like steals, but would probably do the trick. Would much rather re-sign Larkin. Rossi hasn't shown much at the NHL level. So far, he has been a negative contributor. Him and Kasper as our Austrian 1-2 punch down the middle might work, though. Might have to retain on Bertuzzi with Edmonton's cap picture.
Can probably add some late picks for Suter, Erne, Hagg, and Oesterle as well. Doubt they are in the long-term plans. Maybe Ned or Hellberg as well. Not sure who the buyers would be, but teams are always looking to add cheap depth at the deadline.

4 trades too look at
I would be fine with the Bertuzzi return if we don't plan to re-sign him. Engvall is young, cheap, and big and capable of playing a role. We could either flip him immediately for some return (we have people on here saying Erne could bring back a third after all), or spend the rest of the season evaluating him to see if we want him signed for next year. McMann doesn't really do anything for me, but he could be useful in Grand Rapids next year. 2023 is an amazing draft year, but you have to wonder if Toronto will struggle to replace their outgoing UFAs with similar talent for the price, so next year's pick might be better.

Larkin resigns 23-24 season
I think Robert Thomas is your comp. I see 8.5-8.75 x 8. I don't see him out-earning Gaudreau. Duchene isn't a bad comp, but I don't think he earns an extra million over Duchene. If nothing else, Duchene had better stats through that part of his career than Larkin so far. Comparable best seasons, but Duchene had more seasons where he showed more (on the score sheet if nothing else) than Larkin.
