no its not. you cant reacquire a player with retained salary until 1 calendar year has passed from the initial trade

Would This Be Legal
In theory, at least as far as the CBA is concerned, it could all work. The Zaitsev deal would be a legal circumvention of the salary cap, but I can't see why the Leafs would want him back, or why a team would be willing to eat 50% of his salary unless we tossed up a big asset as well. I don't think that'd be worth it for the Leafs, since I believe they can find a way to just trade him, without having to give up an additional asset. As for Marner, the only downfall here would be trust. He would have to trust the Leafs that they would sign him to whatever they had orally agreed to this summer. Additionally, I do not believe they could sign him to that 8-year extension until January 1, 2020. On the chance he has a miserable start to the 2019-20 season, why would the Leafs not use that against him to bring his price down? Yes, I get there needs to be loyalty and trust between team and player, but this is also a business. Signing him this offseason, I think you can get it done for Kucherov money.

The first move is fine but marner can not be revsigned till after the TDL. The second move with zaitsev is cap circumvention. I believe the rule is tat zaitsev can not be moved back to the leafs for 1 full year with salary retained.

Toronto Maple Leafs signed Andreas Borgman (1 Year / $700,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Laudan</b></div><div>Dubarelli is doing good job with the depth player re-signing for low $$ ( same pattern as Moore, Rosen and Sparks ) while hes failing to do his job where he should be making a stand ( Matthews overpayment, which will be precedens for Marner, Kapanen and Johnsson, and Gardiner trading at TDL )</div></div>
I disagree. Squeeze the players at the bottom of your roster, not the talented ones.
I have no issues with them holding onto Gardiner at the TDL. Unless they were getting the equivalent on a longer-term deal for the same money (which no current GM would do), there wasn't a deal to be had.

Goalie Insurance Moving Zaitsev
Certainly an interesting deal that provides us with a tremendous amount of cap relief at season's end. Not sure if Detroit bites though, considering they are getting 2 C level prospects, a 3rd pairing defenseman on a long term $4 million + deal. I guess it really depends on the value of Sparks. If they consider him a future starter, then sure, I guess it'd be worth it.

Marner gets 11
im a habs fan, and a lot of fans on this site know me, but in all honesty, leafs have this 3 year window to win a cup. evne if marner gets 11, u have 4 key pieces locked up for at least the next 3 years, until andersen and rielly need new contracts. pay up and go for it. i mean u traded a 1st rd pick for a dman. kinda means ur all in

Bob McKenzies Projection
Bob McKenzie is normally on the ball and one of the better reporters/insiders out there, but I thought some of these predictions were a little silly. I get that he's not going to assume a bunch of deals, but I can't see the Leafs taking another run at Hainsey when Igor Ozhiganov is far younger and will be less expensive.

Trade with StLouis
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>A_K</b></div><div>Pretty much. I prefer this:
Blues fans say yes. Toronto fans say too much for Petro. Other fans say not enough for Petro. Weird arguments about age curves and cap-structures ensue. Neither team does the trade IRL.</div></div>
For Toronto it is way to much to give up for 1.5 years of Petro. I would say this deal for parayko is close to fair but Lilly seems like a better candidate for the prospect. I also don’t think Parayko is moved whether it’s a good deal or not. Would have to be a massive overpay.
I think if you go kappy a lesser prospect like Rasanen the first and a conditional first for re sign that seems like fair value for petro if blues want zaitsev (I like zaitsev he is about a million over paid but is solid defensively and would pair perfectly with dunn) I would put I’m in the trade as well. Toronto could also just trade him in the off-season for a 3rd or less.

Alright Fine
Blues just wouldn't have any incentive to give up Parayko for that haul.
LoVerde and the 1st round pick may ultimately never get a cup of coffee in the NHL. Zaitsev is likely neutral value. He's a decent 2nd pairing d-man but, at $4.5m...there's probably lots of similar options for teams to pursue for defensive help at that skill point. Realistically he's cap ballast in any trade. So...staring at those 3 pieces + Johnsson likely isn't a starting point in discussions.
I would absolutely love Parayko though and would be more than willing to give up a better package if St. Louis was at all open to listening

Alright Fine
If you can get Parayko for Johnsson, a 1st and 2 other assets that you really shouldn't at all be attached too, you should absolutely be happy to see this happen. I love Johnsson but if he's the best asset you move to get Parayko, you are laughing.

Just an Idea
Minnesota needs young centers more than anything with Staal being 33, Koivu 34, and Cullen like 50. Minnesota is also stacked on the wings and already has Marcus Foligno signed long term which makes the deal very bad on the Minnesota side of the trade.

Good thing signings are all about points, and have nothing to do with shutting down top lines, winning defensive draws, being the guy you have confidence throwing out there with 2 minutes left, ahead by a goal, 3 consecutive years of a PDO above 100, or advanced analytics.
edit : most deals are based off of potential and not current ability

Signing Matthews
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Matthews34</b></div><div>Overall it looks okay, but if Matthews signs at over 11 there is no chance that Marner/Nylander sign at just over 6. They'd be looking at 7-8. Also the Ducks trade is a severe overpayment. I get you tried to free up cap, but I'd rather just sign Gardiner (who I'd rather have than Vatanen) and let JVR walk/trade for a pick.</div></div>
Honestly I think Nylander will take 6 years, 6 mil which is the standard for any players who are potentially elite coming out of their ELC. Marner will get the exact same deal as Nylander the next year, and Matthews will likely get 10-11 unless he puts up 100 pts this year.
