Something from TSN Leafs Lunch
Does not seem like enough to move up possibly 9 spots in the first round. Thinking Philly would want more.

How are Marner and Nylander underpaid? Their comparables (Ehlers, Pasta etc.) have them looking at 6.25 AAV over 8 years.

Resign Nylander, Grab Thornton, and Trade for Tanev
Tanev has played like 39 games this season and has never played more than 70 games in a season. These type of players do not age well.
That being said he probably returns more than this, however the leafs shouldn't trade for him. Can't have a top pairing that only plays like half the season together.

Leafs 2019
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>I think he's made this for the 19/20 season when Ellis is a UFA. I could definitely see Nashville walking away if his price tag is $6m as they have PK at $9m and Josi would be due for UFA the following off season.
I could definitely see Pastrnak money being fair value on a 6+ year term. Matthews at $12m is also fair value but wouldn't be surprised to see him knock $0.5m-$1.5m off. I can see Lou pushing for bridge deals on Marner and Nylander. That would give them the flexibility to go after a big name free agent this off season or next. If they both go for $6+ right away I don't think there's any wiggle room with the cap to add a major piece, let alone 2 like the author has in JT and Ellis</div></div>
I think the Leafs are going to try to sign Willy to an 8 year deal so they can move him over to center and not worry about having to up his wages a ton after a bridge deal whereby he has moved to center full time. I would be more than fine with a 6.75 x 8 for Willy.

It is almost like many fans let 1 mistake every like 5 games completely cloud their judgement.
The Norris goes to the defender who puts up the most points almost ever year so that is flat out wrong. He also is one of the best defender on the leafs at suppressing shots, high danger scoring dances and stopping clean zone entries with his active stick. All the stats and the eye test points to this.
Not sure if you have even seen him play these last few years.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jakem139</b></div><div>Apparently Vancouver’s asking price for Tanve is a prospect a roster player and a 1st so a realistic trade would be Gardiner, Nielsen and a first</div></div>
Lol.... Gardiner probably has more value than Tanev considering one guy plays like 60 games a season and the other leads the leafs (a top 6 team in the NHL) in even strength ice time.... the under rating of Gardiner even by leaf fans is crazy to me...
Since Rielly's injury a few months ago Gardiner has been the leafs best defender and has already put up another 40+ point season.
Edit: just saw Tanev is at 39 games played this year.. no interest in trading for him. Can't build a top pairing around a guy who is the most injury prone player in the league.

Why not????
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Subbanator7667</b></div><div>I think they do. The whole theory you can win without elite defence is only proven by a team that has a ridiculously good offence. By that I mean a generational offence, Crosby and Malkin are two of possibly the greatest 50 players to ever play this game, possibly even matching Mario and Jagr.
Suggesting that the leafs can achieve similar possibilities off of Mathews, Nylander and Marner I think is unjustified. Eventually I think they trade high on on of them like Columbus did/ what Carolina is waiting to do and get an elite player in a place of weakened in exchange, in this case for a defenceman</div></div>
Morgan Rielly is playing like a top pairing guy, Dermott look like a shoe in for a top 4 guy, Gardiner is a #2/#3 etc. The Leafs don't actually have a bad defense. They are a young team who will grow and play better defensive hockey as they spend more time in the league.
Going with the Pens example, I agree the leafs don't have as potent or experienced offensive core as the Pens but the leafs do have a far better defensive core than the one the Pens won the cup with last year (Letang was injuried).
The Leafs are not like the oilers who had no good defenders and so made stupid trades to aquire them. The Leafs have good young defenders and some good defender prospects. They are almost top 5 in the league, why would they making major shakeup trades? If the Leafs were struggling and missing a playoff spot i may consider trading Marner or Willy but they aren't.

Why not????
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Subbanator7667</b></div><div>I still think the main way for Toronto to get that #1 right handed D is giving up on of their young 3. Like Nylander for Hanafin or something along those lines. See what plays out though</div></div>
Hanafin gets close to 64% of his zone starts in the offensive zone. He is extremely sheltered, wouldn't move Nylander for him.
Leafs do not need to get a number 1 RD if it will cost one of the big 3. They have a young core who will only get better and look to be making the playoffs for the 2nd straight year. Why make a big change? Rather wait to see what liljegren becomes or even take a swing at a UFA like Carlson.
That Domi trade is beyond brutal for the leafs too. Last thing they should trade for is a small winger.

The way I see this team being in a few years/ keeping the Marlies stacked
Most of the season Morgan Rielly has played like a number 1 defender... extremely hard quality of competition, good traditional and advanced stats.. Leafs don't need to sell the farm or go all in on a UFA defender whose contract will be a burden in a few years.
Also doubt Matthews gets paid 12 million, seems like a team first guy and his injuries will have prevented him from being in the scoring title race this year which helps lower his salary too

Marner/Nylander for a young good RHD preferably</div></div>
Marner and Nylander are way more valuable than Drouin was when he was traded.

Lol.. That package is a huge overpayment for a defender about to get paid like 10 million plus a year who has been horrible this year. Much much rather stay with the cheap Rielly who is playing as a top pairing defender as well as Gardiner who is top 7 in defender points and two first rounders...

interesting Tavares possibility
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>nikeBauer4411</b></div><div>True probably do not have quite the amount of ready players that Toronto did, but I just think the addition of Tavares would offset that.
Petterson Boeser and if Juolevi is ready, plus Tavares would be close to enough probably.
But again Tavares has to want to go there from the start either way. This is why I named it interesting landing spot.</div></div>
Patterson looks extremely promising but id like to see him play on NA ice in the much more physical NHL (or AHL) before I would put all my eggs in that basket.
The star starting goalie is a huge missing piece that all teams need to compete for a cup.
Edit: though Vancouver is obviously moving in the right direction.

Toronto had 2 young good defenders in Gardiner and Rielly and a good starter in Andy along will the big 3. I don't see Vancouver future blue line looking good enough for a quick rebuild. They are going to need to draft some more defenders in my opinion

Kreider is young enough to stay through the rebuild or retool in New York and won't want to take on Lucic' s brutal contract.
