The leaks are definitely not coming from NJD side. If so, we would hear just as much about negotiations with NSH on Saros, with ANA on Gibson, with CBJ on Merzlikins, etc. But there has been very little on those.</div></div>
He said he was unhappy with how it was handled. Falling through, being in talks to start with, being approached to waive, not being approached to waive there's a plethora of reasons as to why he could be unhappy.

"Up top" the people above Markstrom in a position of working through the trade and trade talks, people who leaked information from up top so on so forth. If you choose to be as narrow minded as you are, you do you girl

Is completely off the table?? There's no mention of who "up top" is. Most likely option is ownership but why not run to most dramatic option possible

We know you take the media as gospel so now we have to assume there's no retention.

Is that just what we are jumping on as "up top" or maybe the ownership who refuses to retain? Maybe even leaks from a New Jersey source? Maybe Conroy. The comment is vague and everyone has already ran to most dramatic route possible.

Pretty easy to pin it on Conroy if you so choose to be intellectually lazy with it, but the Flames ownership has always been hands on while refusing to retain. You can either jump to your conclusion to pat yourself on the back or look at the big picture. Up to you!

I like the base of Debrusk+ for Mangiapane, I do think the deal would get caught up in retention and ultimately fall through. Unless the extension was in place prior to the deal I can't see Calgary retaining. Interesting thought though.

Also the leaks coming out where random Calgary fans are hearing **** from employees and people close to the team should have been much better managed. Keep a tighter ship.</div></div>
There's one team in desperation mode for a goalie... you approach him and say, where would you be willing to waive and please say it's only New Jersey... You're still thinking you've got an inside track on all of this when a vague statement came out that he's unhappy with some aspect of the trade talks. What was the questions that lead to the quote? Especially coming from Eric Francis.

So what would he have liked handled differently from up top? Is it regarding his name being in trades? Is it about moving out a ton of guys but holding onto him? Is it about a message sent to the room that they're still pushing while moving people out? Is it that they didn't move guys out earlier? Is it that he didn't think that there was good communication? Is it that he doesn't like that a trade fell through? Is it that the trade was in place before he was approached to waive? Was he asked to waive and the trade fell through? You genuinely still know nothing outside of a vague quote.

Of course it could be handled differently, like every situation surrounding trade talks. 1st year GM, media frenzy and being 1 of 2 top goalies available. He can be unhappy with how it was handled that's fine.

Ceci and Edmontons 1st versus Grushnikov and Dallases 2nd
I take the package they got over Ceci and a 1st. The draft class this season leans towards players who are going to need 3 - 5 years to develop, they got a kid that has been in that development cycle for a couple years already that counters what they have in their D pipeline already with Poirier, Brzustewicz, Morin, Kylington to an extent. If you are trading for a player that was drafted outside of the 1st round, Dallas is a pretty good place to make a deal with Stankoven, Robertson, Hintz, Bertucci all being picks outside of the 1st round. I also really really trust Conroy's scouting staff and believe they value this player above picking late in the 1st.

What I think the Leafs should do
Calgary really has no need for anything in that package outside of the 1st but the draft class beyond 15-20 is kind of a crap shoot. They're definitely not retaining on MAngiapane for an extra year for anything in that deal.

Hanifin with a cap dump
There's no point in Calgary moving Kuzmenko. His value is low, Calgary has the cap space and time to try build it up to move him at the deadline next year. If he continues to perform at the level he did in Vancouver then you walk him to free agency, no harm no foul.

Ohhh boy. It's crazy how much better a younger, less costly Hanifin has been than Hampus Lindholm in his 2021-22 season and the trade there was a 1st, a young player, two 2nds in a year where 10 - 12 notable d men were moved around the deadline.

As for Greer he's on LTIR and projected to be out for several more weeks yet. That makes him a poor trade target for anyhow. Additionally he's been a good fit in Calgary the team will probably want to extend him.</div></div>
He fractured his foot a month ago with a timeline of 6-8 weeks, wouldn't be surprised to see him skating and ramping up after the deadline. He's not on LTIR but could slide there retroactive for any team looking to have a body in the playoffs when there is no cap. Flames are flush with bottom 6 forwards, I think he served his purpose but to log jam younger guys who are coming up is not worth keeping him around.

Both him and Kerins are similar caliber prospects though. If you click the expanded observations you would see that neither has really been updated since at earliest October. Kerins literally only has 2 observations wrote about him, hence only 2 points on the graph creating a straight line</div></div>
We will agree to disagree, that's all good. I think Stranges' tools are better and whether they are similar calibre now or not my thought was about acquiring the upside which I think is significantly higher than Kerins.
