Keep the 4th pick and dont be too aggressive
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PavelZachaGOAT37</b></div><div>Only defender I would trade 4th pick for is Sergachev. Other than him I think we just keep it. Sergy got lot of experience and is young so I would understand trading that pick for him, he would be the only player I can think of rn id be not mad at trading that pick for. But I agree with you, would rather keep pick and not go crazy in FA.
My ideal offseason
- Sign a vet forward, or trade for one in a cap dump where we get picks or prospects (closer to nhl ready)
- Sign a good tandem goalie and try to work a 1A 1B goalie system short term until Mac has a better team infront of him and he himself is better. (idk who but id be okay spending decent money on a 1-2 year deal)
- Vet defender who is solid on another short term deal (sign or trade for one) (Guys I like. Ian Cole, Savard, McCabe, Oleksiak, just to name a few).
Sticking to the youth and saving money for Jack Bratt Ty Smith Holtz Mac and other young guys is what I want. I hope we play it smart and don't rush it too too quickly by spending a ton of money.</div></div>
I would add Chychurn to the list and for the ideal Offseason, getting some cap dumps would be smart
10000% agree with everything else you said

Shutdown guys like Bahl and Siegenthaler will handle a lot more defensive responsibility.</div></div>
What's your thoughts on Siegnthaler?
Idon't think he's good enough to make our future top 6. He might be our 7 dman

I mean we will have a lack of right handed players but I guess having good players is more important than their handedness. Also Smith is a young rookie, I think his defense will get better with more time, he is a great skater and a smart player, he might never be shutdown, but he can be good enough. Same with Luke, he is young but also big too and going to continue to grow and put on size at Michigan. The future on the defense is very very bright!</div></div>
I think Luke and Ty will both be decent defensive because of their speed, hands, And hockey IQ (similar to Jack). The future is definetly looking bright on defense :)

Not just on defence, but offence too! The whole team! Bratt, Mercer, Holtz, Hughes, Hischier, Foote, Sharangovich, Kuokkanen etc. And then you have Blackwood in net!

Exactly! You don’t have the be right handed to be good on that side. Look at TJ Brodie, and Mackenzie Weeger. They play opposite sides, and they are good at it. It wouldn’t hurt to try if they are comfortable with it. I don’t care what anyone says, if Luke Hughes is available, they are picking him.

Thanks for the information, and that looks deadly! Especially if Luke Hughes turns out to be as good as he’s projected to be.

Nylander for Severson?
Just a thought I know Severson is a big part of our plans.

Nylander
The Leafs are not going to trade Nylander. They like good players. IMO the Leafs are losers in a Severson for Nylander deal. It has whiffs of Larsson-Hall. I don't even think a defenceman would be their target, as their top 4 performed quite well this season and they have some good options at the bottom as well. Depth scoring was a bigger issue for Toronto, trading scoring for D doesn't help them win that playoff series.
I don't see the Leafs trading any of their top 4. They don't "have to" and unless an offer absolutely totally makes sense that improves the roster and is a slam dunk it won't happen. I don't see a 1-for-1 happening with the salary involved, and the Leafs are sure not to get value in a trade with multiple pieces. Smart GM's don't trade point per game players, no matter what.

No Marner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PavelZachaGOAT37</b></div><div>Yea fair point, he would def make us better no doubt. But I don't think we are ready yet realistically, Jack and Nico need to take the next steps before we are ready. Also tons of cap space, but tons of guys who gotta get paid eventually and that money will go fast with guys like Ty, Jack, Bratt, Zacha, Sharangovich, Kuokkanen, McLeod, Blackwood all expiring within 2 seasons or already expired. Granted they won't all be big extensions but my argument is the money will go fast. And also maintaining solid depth and breathing room for moves to be made.
I understand your reasoning. My counterargument is that we shouldn't be overvaluing our young players to the point where we are not going great players. Some of those players you mentioned are going to fail and will not be on the roster in a few years, and none of them have produced seasons comparable even to Marner's (18yr old) rookie season. Teams that win have difference makers/stars, Marner is and that's what this team needs. Plus with the cap going up in a few years, I don't think having Marner on the books at $11m is going to ruin this team's cap, even if all these players pan out.
Again, understand your reason, just respectfully disagree.</div></div>

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CalvinKlein</b></div><div>I think everyone is being a somewhat prisoners of the moment when it comes to Marner (esp Leafs fans). If the price was right, I'd absolutely take on Marner in a heartbeat.
This guy is a 24 yr old proven 90 point player, you can say it's because of his supporting cast, but a lot of it is because of him. He was on pace for 30 goals this year and has averaged 90-100 points (per 82 games) each of the last 3 seasons. He would easily be the best player on the Devils and improve them a lot.
As far as as poor postseasons go, our problem has been getting to postseason, so I'd worry about that later.</div></div>
$11 million contract is the dealbreaker

Problem is, there are no top-4 two-way d-men available via free agency.
Dougie Hamilton maybe, but I doubt CAR lets him walk.
Goligoski, Edler....maybe on one-year deal.
Alex Martinez, Oleksiak, Larsson, Savard, McCabe, Kulikov...not locks to be top-4, but useful. That's be my list for UFA.
I think the easiest path to obtaining two top-4 d-man are (a) through draft and (b) a pre-expansion trade.
Veteran Center - Zajac, Krejci</div></div>
Maybe Coleman for vet center
I think Larsson or Murray would be the best options for defense but I do agree we should find one via trade/draft

The only change I would make is not putting Leo in the lineup. Rather sign Blake Coleman and make him our 3C with Holtz and Foote as his wingers. Then move McLeod to the 4th line with Bastian and Woody

Good price for Leo, I would even be willing to upgrade one of those picks to a 2nd if we are desperate.
He’d be a good vet for a young team
