Yeah I figured it was a meh trade for both sides, I could just totally envision dubas making it out of necessity and the new buffalo GM wanting to make some noise

I can see Buffalo not being happy with their best center prospect being lost, and Toronto not being happy with the return on D as they are in win now mode, but options for Toronto are few when it comes to staying under the cap, and Buffalo getting Lafreniere can allow them to trade other wing assets for a potential solution at center.

Niku was a good prospect a couple years ago until everyone realized his defensive game is barely AHL level. The thing about physical forwards is that they always hit a point in their late 20s early 30s where their bodies give out and they can't play anymore. Getting a guy whose 25 and still an RFA after his contract fills the need for more than a year or two, which needs filling ever since Tanev and his 200 hits a season left

I mean have you seen this calgary series? Losing Tanev, Chiarot, Buff, Myers, Trouba and Lemieux has clearly made them pretty soft. Adding Hartman is necessary just for the sake of survival in the west

Was it a coincidence that when we acquired DeMelo that our defence started to play adequately at least? No it wasn’t because I’m not joking he was the best overall defenceman on the team this year. You’re prob right on the value, a 2nd and maybe a prospect. Make no mistake tho. You win with those types of guys on your lineup. Not just with a bunch of John Carlsons on defence</div></div>
Well yeah I'm not denying DeMelo's effectiveness. I love the guy on our team but that doesn't make him worth a lot. The NHL is full of effective players and if every useful guy was worth a 1st and NHL calibre prospect we'd have like three trades a year.

They're really not tho. DeMelo was just traded for a 3rd. GMs aren't stupid, nobody gave up more for him so that's what Ottawa took and that's what they're valued at by GMs.
Cernak is younger so he'd be worth MAYBE a 2nd but if Tampa expects more than that they're better off not giving him up.

Am I missing something? I know Ehlers is good for a 2nd line winger but on paper Klefbom holds up well analytically and would fill a need on the Jets way better than Ehlers on the 3rd line would. I picked Edmonton because they would probably want Ehlers the most

fix the D in free agency with a couple toba bois
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MisstheWhalers</b></div><div>Heinola's point production with the Jets was 5 points in 8 games, that's not bad...</div></div>
NHL history is littered with players who got lots of points in a very small amount of games, that when given a bigger role regress to their actual ability. All of his assists were secondary assists scored by players in the jets top 6. Combining that with 60% Ozone starts simply means he was put in every position to succeed, playing with the best players and not having to constantly battle in his own zone. With all that, he managed to barely pulled out a positive corsi and currently has negative fenwick. He wasn't playing near an NHL level then, which is why he went back to liiga. Now in liiga he's showing what happens when they give him a bigger role against men for more than a few games. He's still 18 and I believe he's going to become an amazing player, but his development shouldn't be rushed because he looked good in a sheltered role for a few games. He won't be ready for next year and he shouldn't be expected to, he's a 20th overall defensemen born in 2001. GIve him the years he needs and he can be a stud in the NHL by age 21-22 like most defensemen's development curve.

Heinola has 1 point in 16 games in liiga, and samberg is currently playing at a level significantly below even AHL level. There's a very real chance both start with the moose next year.

Yeah the jets are going to give up two of their few remaining decent prospects for 1 year from a 33 year old. The jets aren't a playoff contender this year, why on earth would they be giving away their futures for players way past their prime? Petry isn't going to Winnipeg, they're going to hold onto the prospects and draft someone like Sanderson instead, because they're GM isn't a reactive moron like literally everyone on this site.

if were in playoff position come february
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MisstheWhalers</b></div><div>Blah blah I hear that all the time but it's a false narrative, he gets far too much ice time with very little production. Maurice over plays Lowry who brings down the offense of anyone he plays with and by him getting so much ice time taking away ice time from more offensively inclined players you get overworked and subsequently burned out Scheiffele, Wheeler, etc cause they're being played more to try and get back into games and the 4th line barely plays because of that as well.
Play your better players more and let them outscore the competition, by playing Lowry in the 3C spot it essentially sinks the entire bottom 6.
The most successful teams tend to get scoring throughout the lineup yet the Jets don't even though the talent is there to, it doesn't get bottom 6 production cause Lowry is just a big body 4C, Copp should really be centering that line and Lowry should be on the 4th line as Gustaffsons LW or ideally traded for a decent dman.
It doesn't matter how good a guy is at shutting down the other teams top players(even though Lowry really isn't that good at it), with 14 minutes a night of ice time there needs to be some production, I don't give a flying **** what a guys corsi is, if he's on pace for 9 ****ing points he's replaceable by anyone making a league minimum salary.. Lol
Also Maurice has been trying this Lowry shutdown the other teams best/line match/give Scheiffele,Wheeler, etc easier match ups for how many seasons now and it just does not work, it's the definition of insanity to keep rolling out Lowry for 14+ minutes a night and expecting different results.</div></div>
I fail to see how playing Lowry less and Scheifele more will burn out Scheifele less. The Lowry line's job is to forecheck in the offensive zone and maintain possession of the puck to tire out the other team's lines. Every shot on net for his line is another opportunity for the other team to gain possession, so naturally his shooting and offense are going to be low. That is a result of Maurice's system, not Lowry as a player. Putting Copp in Lowry's role will just result in Copp getting no points the same as Lowry.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MisstheWhalers</b></div><div>There's no player I want gone more then Lowry, as long as he's a Jet this team will never improve.
Don't care one bit about his fight with Reaves, he's on pace for 9 points, can pay someone else far less then $2.9M to get in a few fights a season and contribute very little offense.</div></div>
I mean it's pretty unfair to judge a clear defensive forward on his offensive production. Four lines of strictly offensive players actually create a pretty weak offensive team, because that forces your top line to always have to play against other team's top lines, slowing down their offensive production. If you look at Lowry's defensive stats, he consistently performs well above average on faceoffs while having 60% D zone starts, and currently has a 0 +/-, so although he's not scoring goals, he's also not letting other teams score any either. His value comes from being able to play against the top players of the league and shut down their offense, letting the Jets top 6 come out against weaker competition and light up the other team's weaker forwards.

copp is above average, getting 55% last year, but thats only with half a season of taking regular faceoffs. Lowry has well above 50% average, while being a regular centre for 3+ years, and taking faceoffs against other teams best centers, including 57% last year
