I truly don’t get some of my fellow leaf fans. We are fine in net; if we had no other issues to address - OK, try to upgrade in net. But we have other more pressing issues (top 4D to play with Mo, 2/3C) + I have total confidence in Sammy + Woll. Both are coming off excellent years, are young with runway to get even better and are cost effective. Literally no interest in hellybuck or Hart - they’ll cost a ransom and no guarantee they’ll play any better than what we have.

You MAY have upgraded the 1C position IF Eichel comes back from surgery 100% but you downgraded 3C, 2LHD and destroyed the future of our D corps plus gave up our 1st round pick in the first live draft in 2 years, one in which Montreal hosts. Let's forget Eichel at least for this season let him have his surgery and return to play for the Sabres and then IF he returns to form trade for him at the deadline or next off season.

Honestly the penguins bench looked like a ghost like they didnt care anymore almost like they were revolting so to get Sullivan fired. Honestly he needs to go. While his accomplishments with the team have been great the last 3 years have been well
2018: Washington beats them in R2. Kuznetsov meme
2019: Swept by the Islanders
2020: Lost to a team who 4 months earlier sold a lot of its players and was ready to kick it at the lottery.
And thats not good.
And it seemed after the loss to washington things were going down hill fast for them. They grab Gabranson (Luckily got him out). Traded Kahun for Depth a which made 0 sense. Why not just trade for sheary lul wouldnt have costed that much. They even bought this season bringing in Marleau and Zucker and moved picks and prospects who could have been better future options for them. So it seems they have veered off the path and are struggling to find it again. Hopefully they do. And if JJ is still playing on this team next season instead of one of the better rookie options they got i dont know anymore.
Oh and for god sake if he goes dont bring in Babcock cause he is a slight improvement in attitude issues.

Quite honestly, Lehkonen and Weise did nothing to suggest to me that they should be in this series at all. For that reason I think I would try this line up
Tatar-Danault-Gallagher (why fix what isn't broke)
Domi-Suzuki-Drouin
Hudon-KK-Armia (KK and Hudon had good chemistry in Laval)
Byron-Evans-Weal (gave other teams major fits with their speed and tenacity at the end of the season)
Chiarot-Weber
Kulak-Petry
Mete-Juulsen (could be a good pairing that takes advantage of the Pens 3rd and 4th lines)
Price
Lindgren

He isn’t the ideal 1C, but he is an amazing 2C and having him as a 1C until our young guys step in isn’t that bad. Kotkaniemi or Suzuki will eventually take his spot.

If Dubas was Better at Negotiating Contracts
I wouldn't blame Dubas. Shanahan and MLSE has the a whole whack of high paying executives....they should have seen league comparables and stuck to that structure.
Started with Nylander. Leafs were in first place at a 120 point season when he finally signed November 30. I would have made him sit out the season if he didn't want to a reasonable deal . 6.5m X 6 might have been an overpay.
Aho and Marner had identical stats for two seasons. 8.5m X 5 was the going rate.
Matthews, doesn't deserve to the second highest paid paid in the league, especially on a five year contract.

Nylander contract vs Gourde contract
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>leemos27</b></div><div>It is absolutely a factor for the player, don't be naive... 50% rate for Toronto vs 36% for Tampa Bay. The team may not care, but the player sure does. And what are you talking about? Toronto sports teams have had a terrible time trying to sign free agents over the years.
There is a reason capfriendly has this: <a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/post_tax_calculator">https://www.capfriendly.com/post_tax_calculator</a></div></div>
You have just quoted personal tax rates as did CapFriendly. Sure those rates are accurate, virtually meaningless as a calculator for take home pay for pro athletes. Leafs have signed few UFAs, but especially during the NHL cap era, thanks to the incompetence of Ferguson, Burke and Nonis, didn't have a great amount of cap space to spend on UFAs. When the Jays had revenue because they were a good team, they spend more any team and attracted many UFAs. The Raptors sign UFAs and more sign their own players to massive contracts so they don't leave via free agency. So please it's a foolish argument you present. California and New York have probably the biggest personal tax rate in the US, but teams in those states are premier destinations for UFAs in various sports.
There has never been any complaints about the tax rate in Canada for the Blue Jays and Raptors....because tax laws allow these players NOT to pay the personal tax rate. But somehow the tax experts on CapFriendly look at personal tax rates and think they have meaning.

Oh so its every other player in the league is underpaid, excellent argument. Be sure to let Larkin know that also as he just signed 6.1 mil, same age/draft and plays Centre (on a tire fire team not with the luxury of playing with Matthews) and put up 63 pts.

Personal tax rates have NOTHING to do with actually players take home. Case in point we NEVER hear about the Raptors and Blue Jays having to pay premiums for players. Sorry you're going to use a more realistic argument that that.
It appears Gourde looks like a bargain. But he only had one good year at age 25. The expectation for Nylander is he going to be better than he has been as 22 year old... 6.5m good not 8m.
My prediction is Gourde gets trading next June before his NTC kicks in. Tampa will need cap space, but they will get a nice return on him, instead of having him this year and losing him as a UFA.

Not to compare the two but Nylander is inflated simply because of the media. I have said this every post, take his closest comparables (Larkin, Ehlers, Pastrnak) and slide him in there where he fits. It's quite easy honestly but that won't sell as much as the negative spin

“No problems at all”
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Random2152</b></div><div>Gotta love how you prove people wrong and so they get all defensive lol. Lets break down these comments.
This myth that Toronto's D is bad is just ridiculous and has been debunked many times, but I will do it again just for you (and this thread).
I'll start with the oz point as that is your most valid, although I will be addressing the whole argument throughout. Oz in the KHL is a beast defensively and can QB a powerplay. Once on the NA ice (which he has been for months now in preparation) I expect some of that offence to dry up, but the defensive side will stay and be amplified. why? Because he is a big hitting mobile zone denying Dman. All easier on a smaller ice. Last year Rielly - Hainsey was the Shut down pair, used against the top competition, expect Rielly - Oz to be a thing. If he doesn't work out he is gone, so I guess this AGM is assuming he works out as a shut down guy and gets paid, which is a fine assumption as of now.
he fact you don't think Rielly is good, especially over Gardiner is ridiculous and needs to be called out, so I will say it plainly. You are stupid, and here is why. He is everything good about Gardiner without his faults. He is not an OEL, or a Hedman, or a Doughty or Karlsson, but he is a fine #1 on any team, on a good contract and is young. He started as a OFD and slowly turned into a premier TWD in this league, and takes everything Babs throws against him in stride. The reason he is a minus and Gardiner is a plus, Gardiner plays the lower competition, while Rielly drags around the corpse of Ron Hainsey and shuts down the top lines of every team(that is also why Gards get more mins). Notice how in game 7 last year when Rielly went down is when Toronto started to shake when we had to rely on Gardiner for that role.
Dermott is a project, he seems good, another year of development will show us what he has. All we need is for him to be a good mobile 2nd pairing TWD that can play both sides, which for the most part he already is, minus the good 2nd pair bit, which will come with development.
On another note: We lost Polak this year, which is a gain by itself.
Zaitzev got sick last year and never recovered. Before that he looked like he did in his first year, which is to say good. Watch for a rebound, as in not a liability defensively, and getting 30-35 points a year. Not ideal for a 1st pair RD, but he just needs to fill in until a prospect develops.
On the Johnsson and Kappy contracts: I agree that the term is a bit long here, but their contracts come up at the end of this year. They both max out a 2.5 mil a year, and It will be a 2-3 year deal, which is fine. We can afford that, and If we cant in the future, we will have good young RFA's to trade. Who doesn't want that? As you said, Kappy and Johnsson have proven very little yet, but based on their expected usage THIS YEAR (< which I cannot stress how important that is), a low of 1.75 to a high of 2.25 seems reasonable.
------------------------------------------
Look - I am not getting defensive, it seems like you are the one who is a bit on the defensive side. A) Never said I think Gardiner is better than Rielly. I think they are pretty much the same player, with a slight edge to Rielly. What I said was I don't understand why Toronto fans seem to love Rielly so much more than Gardiner. I think they are both a #2 or #3 dman (not pairing). Rielly has more potential.
If you really want to dig in, we can:
TOI: Gardiner 1st - Rielly 4th
BLKS: Gardiner 3rd - Rielly 4th
HITS: Gardiner 4th - Rielly 5th
Short handed time on ice: Gardiner 5th - Rielly 4th
PP TOI: Gardiner 1st - Rielly 2nd (+:30 pg)
Points: Tied 1st
+/-: Gardiner +9 - Rielly -4 (PP & Short handed do not factor into this stat - Even strength only)
Corsi & fenwick slighty in Rielly's favor last year, but slightly in Gardiner's for career (very close) - This goes to my next point. Neither are anywhere near where a true #1 is.
So to Clarify - I do think Rielly is slightly better despite the stats, but that's probably because I think his ceiling is higher than Gardiner's. I just don't get why it seems you all turned on Gardiner for having a bad series (which wouldn't have been nearly as bad if Andersen made some saves he should have) I'd put 2 of his bad goals on Andersen (Debrusk's in particular) and being paired with a traffic cone.
Andersen had a very good regular season. In fact he led the league in Shots against and saves. That isn't a good thing for a defense you are claiming is good. They were fourth Worst in the league in Shots allowed per game - The three teams ahead of them did not make the playoffs (NYI, NYR, FLA)
Andersen match his career average in save % at .918, but is giving up almost .50 goals per game more since joining the leafs? why? shots! Also - you better hope his Saves above average continues to climb because if it regresses to what it was in Anaheim, that number will go up even more.
Toronto's offense is scary good, so it will hide some of you defensive deficiencies. As a Bruins fan, this is the best possible scenario from my point of view. Keep on believing that, because I still think the Bruins can get past you. You trade Nylander for a legit #1 D and give more time to Kapanen or Johnsson, I don't think your Offense suffers at all. Not one bit, the Leafs will still be top 3 offensively, but now (theoretically) you have your Dmen slotted correctly and you are not asking them to do too much.
Don't get me wrong, The Leafs are going to be a handful for years to come, but you still need a defenseman.</div></div>

I just don't think you'll get Kapanen and Johnsson on those contracts. Kapanen is viewed to have a high ceiling, certainly higher than Hyman and Brown, who were both drafted in much later rounds. And you think Kapanen and Johnsson will actually take cheaper deals than Hyman? If you want them for 2 million the contracts will only be 2 years. And if Dermott is a top 4 defenceman, expect to pay him like one the following season. I'm not saying Toronto can't make their team work under the cap. I'm just saying that Toronto fans believe that Kapanen and Johnsson are going to be these amazing wingers, and they might be. But if they are amazing, they won't be cheap. And if they're that cheap, they won't be amazing. Understand?
